seriously though folks, do you think that if you give your child an unusual or weird name, you must be prepared for some non-favourable reactions? Because after all, it is everybody's business isn't it - a name isn't a private thing.

TidyDancer · 31/05/2011 20:38

I know a Zebedee. I think the parents were trying to be individuals rather than Magic Roundabout devotees, but who the fuck knows?!

TidyDancer · 31/05/2011 20:39

Oh, and I do know a Tarquin and Persephone who are brother and sister.

SJisontheway · 31/05/2011 20:42

I know a Wenceslas (sp) as in good king!

catwhiskers10 · 31/05/2011 20:43

Persephone is the one that springs to my mind-the mum wasnt upper class at all but had a 'put on' snooty voice and when asked her DDs name (I had to write it down) she insisted on spelling it even though I said I knew how to spell it as if i was some sort of moron who couldn't possibly have known how to spell such an unusual name.

fortyplus · 31/05/2011 20:43

It's nothing new - I went to school with Annabel Chetwynd-Talbot and Leonora Booth-Clibborn. Lovely girls - I'd love to meet up again one day just to see if they ended up living in stately homes Smile

BatmanLovesRobin · 31/05/2011 20:44

Can I add Merriment Marmite Chocolat to the list? Never met him, but his birth was registered just before DS2's, and the registrar was a little bemused, shall we say...

whackamole · 31/05/2011 20:47

My friend (who is currently pregnant with her first) was intent on calling her boy and girl Yannick and Ophelia. This was in school.

Ophelia isn't too bad, but both are so bloody pretentious!

takethisonehereforastart · 31/05/2011 20:48

BatmanLovesRobin NO! That's wonderful in a really awful way!

UrsulaBuffay · 31/05/2011 20:50

The worst thing about the marmite chocolat name is his first name sounds like murraymint too.

LadyWord · 31/05/2011 20:54

Our DC have unusual names - one not actually a name (until now), one very very rare. But neither of them are actually bonkers, toff-tastic or hilarious - people don't laugh or look shocked, they either say they are beautiful/cool, or if they're the more conformist type, they just mumble that they're a bit odd.

But anyway I do know my DC are unique anyway! It's just that we like the idea of our DC having unusual names - either they'll love it and feel special, or they'll hate it and they can change it/use middle name/nicknames. I wish I had a madly unusual name.

Best mad name I have heard of was Panda, but it wasn't someone I knew personally. Have known a Timon, Titus, Eden (a boy) and a Loveday. Quite like all of those though!

snailoon · 31/05/2011 20:57

We know one called Apollo.

carabos · 31/05/2011 21:01

Panda is well within the range of normal imo.

cannydoit · 31/05/2011 21:01

ebeneezer, i mean really.

Numberfour · 31/05/2011 21:07

a colleague has a child called Rufus. Another friend of mind has initials BJ. I think that I am now irrelevanting!

scottishmummy · 31/05/2011 21:15

....so to all the horahs i know, i salute you

JohnniesBitch · 31/05/2011 21:23

When i catch up with old friends via facebook, or seen in costa etc, I have met many a Reuben and Tobias, especially amongst those that would consider that they have moved up in the classes system.
The poshest sounding name i know of Hugo Java Clarence-Smitherington!!!
My oldest child has a name where people always add an or en onto the the end of his name and has to be corrected, no its K..., the middle two are William and Lucy and my youngest i thought had a nice slightly unusual name but according to MN is going to be in a class full of them in 3 years time.

Lipsofchicken · 31/05/2011 21:24

BatmanlovesRobin

I know of Merriment Marmite Chocolate too! She's a girl, named after the parents favourite things.

I'm a teacher, I know a lot of strange names:how about Tyger, Bacall & Hayworth (sisters), Merlin, Wensdae, Field, Cambridge, Echo-Tango, oh and loads more, will have a think....

LadyWord · 31/05/2011 21:25

"Field" is fantastic!

On that drama Any Human Heart that was on recently, there was a character (female) called Land - DP & I loved it!

pixipie151 · 31/05/2011 21:26

All of the above are nothing compared to the wonders of the 'unique' name, so fashionable in certain circles. Try Shivon, Taiwan, Chyna, names such as these are an affliction and are often accompanied by double barrelled surnames. If I was a Persephone I would be proud and say it loud!

Lipsofchicken · 31/05/2011 21:26

Somerset, Atlas, Nemo and Raphaella

manicbmc · 31/05/2011 21:29

We have quite a few at work. One Tiger and I think there's one called Lord fgs Grin

There's also a Neil, an Alan and an Ian - all in the same class. And a poor kid who looks just like a miniature Jimmy Carr Grin

Haribojoe · 31/05/2011 21:29

Oberon, sonny elvis and merlin.

ptolemy · 31/05/2011 21:31
