Someone mentioned Loveday - I met a Loveday once!

Only ever came across it in a TV adaptation of a Rosamund Pilcher novel before then!! Grin

Merlin? I know a dog called Merlin!

We have a lot of maiden names used as second names in our family. One of my aunts is Firstname Ferne Surname.

A great uncle was Lancelot Marmaduke but known as Ricardo throughout his life. Many of his siblings had arty names - one being Raphael. Luckily these have not been passed down the years.

OmniaParatus · 31/05/2011 21:41

I was nearly called Vashti. It was only when my aunt pointed out it sounded a little like 'washday' and 'ashtray' that my mother relented and let my dad name me.

I will always be grateful to my aunt for that!

I know a Temperance (girl) I keep worrying about what happens when she turns 16 and decide she really likes a drink!

I know a Virgil and an Allegra both have toff roots!

takethisonehereforastart · 31/05/2011 22:05

There was a character on Inspector Morse once called Grayling and I really liked it. I did consider it when I was pregnant with LO but had no idea how I would explain that I wanted to name our baby after a fictional character named after a fish. LO was a boy though and it was definately a girls name.

eversoslightlytired · 31/05/2011 22:13

I know of a Promise and Nero!!

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 31/05/2011 22:14

I quite like Sailor. Blush

I know of someone who's DD is called Aynjel (pronounced Angel).

Mumwithadragontattoo · 31/05/2011 22:16

I know a lot of posh people despite being of mining stock myself (not K. Middleton though). Rupert and Piers are obviously classics. Also know of a Valentine, Cassian and Octavia.

Mumwithadragontattoo · 31/05/2011 22:17

And a Launcelot as well.

missismonky · 31/05/2011 22:20

I know two boys, Obadiah Pooka and Barnabus Boo, last name Crowe.

They are lovely boys.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/05/2011 22:21

I have met a child called Ace.
My son's friend is called Miracle.
I also know of a girl called Rogue (after X Men I think? Is she a character in X Men?)

I once knew someone called Cressida, whose brother was Aloysius.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/05/2011 22:22

Oh, I like Launcelot.

CinnabarRed · 31/05/2011 22:28

I know an adult man called Vivid. Suits him, actually. Lucky he wasn't a shy retiring type.

manicbmc · 31/05/2011 22:30

I once met a very sweet, squishy baby in Boots nappy change facility - she was called Precious and really suited the name.

WriterofDreams · 31/05/2011 22:36

Pixipie, Shivon sounds like the Irish name Siobhan which is a very very common name in Ireland. It's the Irish for Joan.

Atomant · 31/05/2011 22:47

Definitely not posh but friend of a friends children are called Memphis & strummer adorable little girls. They have other siblings with equally unusual names which I can't remember.

I overheard a very nicely spoken mother trying to reason with her young son and her friend's daughter at Legoland recently. It went something like this...

'Tristan, darling-aren't you going to apologise to Arabella?'
...silence...
'But, Tristan-that wasn't a very good thing to do was it? Arabella didn't like you pushing her over, did she?'
...silence...
'Well, what are you going to say then?'
(shouts) ....'Nuuuthing'...
'Oh, well dear, oh-well, you know-that's made mummy really very sad, very sad...'

Conversation trails away and Tristan never did apologise!

Thingumy · 31/05/2011 23:02

I knew of a girl who was called Tuesday.

I thought it was a fabulous name.

manicbmc · 31/05/2011 23:05

I have taken to calling dd Nigel or Bernard. She takes about the same amount of notice of me as if I use her actual name. But she's 16 so it's probably normal. Grin

Salmotrutta · 31/05/2011 23:28

Thingumy - there used to be an actress called Tuesday Weld

Wonder if she's still alive.........
A bit contrived in my opinion ........... much like Apple and so on.

What on earth are people thinking when they name their daughter Pocahontas (and yes, there is at least one girl called that in the UK - I know this to be true without going into detail)

I know another belter too but won't post it because it is very distinctive.

AnnoniMouse · 31/05/2011 23:37

Dp had a boss called Loveday Growcock once.
