Regular poster with recent namechange here....

A friend of mine was seeing this guy - a lot older than her, he is very well off and as a birthday present offered to buy her veneers (sp*)

So she went to a dental clinic, had her actual teeth filed down to pins and is wearing temp veneers until her appointment next week.

1st payment was made (cash, by him)
2nd payment is due next week before the job is complete (thousands of pounds due)

He has dumped her! And told her to sort it out herself - she is a young woman with no money - sure she works, but is not earning enough to pay for this and she has requested to pay on finance but she has a crap credit rating so has therefore been declined!

In addition to "How could you be so stupid" What can I advise her here? Does anyone have any experience in this kind of thing?

Any suggestions welcome? We've been through how stupid she has been, we just need to find a way to sort this?

No, I have not seen her teeth, how can i have seen her teeth if she has temp veneers fitted, I'm going by what she said to me of course.

Should she be able to take the temp ones out?

I'm not a dentist, nor a dental nurse, but I am sure that I'd be shitting myself if my teeth had been shaved down in any way shape or form and I did not have the means to pay for it after someone promised it to me as a gift.

I'm asking for advice on the situation, I'm not getting into a war of words regarding technical terms for various types of dentistry

herbietea your own link proves you wrong!

While you're waiting for your veneers to be fabricated, your dentist may fit you with some temporary veneers to protect your prepared teeth. Not all dentists will offer temporary veneers.

  1. On your second appointment, your dentist will fit your new veneers to your teeth.

copied and pasted from your link love.

squeakytoy · 31/05/2011 21:57

Ok, so its fairly safe to now assume she hasnt been left with a gob looking like Shane MacGowan, and it wont look quite as horrific as initially described.

Veneers are also temporary too.. they will last years if you are careful (and lucky) but she needs to start saving as it is not a permanent thing.

BimboNo5 · 31/05/2011 21:59

Mumbling- how does her link prove her wrong?

MumblingRagDoll · 31/05/2011 21:59

x posts squeaky she has temp veneers which wont last...and when they come off she will indeed look like Shane MacGowan! see my link above.

HolyFail · 31/05/2011 22:01

Jeez, MumblingRagDoll, that is scary!

Whether they are pins or not at this stage, and once I see with my own eyes I cannot be sure, but if they look anything like that underneath I'd be devastated!

Go begging to the bank, sell some stuff on ebay (does she have a car she can sell), pawn some jewellery. Amazed there's no family that can help. The veneers have almost certainly been made by now, so she'll incur the costs regardless. Get them fitted first, then pursue him for reimbursement. Have to say I question her rationale in the first place, teeth whitening is one thing, veneers is a whole different ballgame.

MumblingRagDoll · 31/05/2011 22:02

Because bimbo she says this

You are wrong holyfail A tooth is filed down to a peg before a crown is fitted, not a veneer. Infact in most cases when a tooth is prepared for a veneer a temporary veneer is not necessary.

And I looked at the link she cited and it said this

While you're waiting for your veneers to be fabricated, your dentist may fit you with some temporary veneers to protect your prepared teeth. Not all dentists will offer temporary veneers.

It does not say MOST cases....it says "not all dentists will offer temp veneers"

Andthe pic above shows teeth filed down...in preperation for veneers.

squeakytoy · 31/05/2011 22:02

Not if she went to a "dentist to the stars" she wont, because only a butcher would take the teeth down to pegs like that..

My DIL had them done, and I have seen the teeth after they were prepared, they were nothing like pegs.

Snuppeline · 31/05/2011 22:03

I've read the link to the description of veneers and though I agree "filed down and pins stuck in" sounds melodramatic it does say on the site linked too that "Although veneers are strongly cemented into place, there have been cases where they come loose and fall off. In such situations, it is important that you keep hold of your veneer and contact your dentist immediately." I'm pretty sure that is not just for cosmetic reasons that the professional advise is to urgently get things sorted if your teeth are exposed. Surely decay will set in quickly, not to mention it must be painful to have the nerves exposed.

WhoAteMySnickers · 31/05/2011 22:03

RagDoll, I think you'll find that was an extreme case of tooth decay pre veneers.

icooksocks · 31/05/2011 22:04

Wasn't that the link that I posted?

Dim is not the word for it Lunatic, but going over and over how silly she has been will not help IMO - but yes I agree wholeheartedly.

Snuppeline · 31/05/2011 22:11

Hm... right some of the links here show that the actual preparation probably isn't so dramatic as your friend is making out.

Dentists and dental workers - can one live without veneers if the teeth have been prepared for veneers? Or will teeth decay?

SpringHeeledJack · 31/05/2011 22:18
