and think we should pull out

LRD that is an extraordinary point.
It is true. People assumed 'bored of' because it seems possible. How tragic is that.

UrsulaBuffay · 29/05/2011 22:25

:)

We realise though don't we that someone's gonna come bursting in shouting in a minute?

Mollydollydoll · 29/05/2011 22:26

I think the naughty step fryingonions :)

LaWeasel · 29/05/2011 22:27

SEA got a hard time because "sick of" like lots of other phrases has two meanings and in a quick read it wasn't 100% obvious which one they meant.

No one was laying in for the fun of it, they misunderstood.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/05/2011 22:29

Pag - I do think it's true, and tragic. A lass I was talking to a few months ago was really surprised when I mentioned the war - she thought it had finished years ago. That's awful too.

TheFlyingOnion · 29/05/2011 22:30

True 'dat LaWeasel...

Also, it reminded me of the "bored of" hearing about Maddy McCann post of a couple of weeks back....

Animation · 29/05/2011 22:31

Southeastastra

I completely understand what you're trying to say. I agree with you - it's just crazy losing these young boys in this stupid war. And more killed on the news today - makes my heart sink looking at their bonnie fresh faces. It's not right!

southeastastra · 29/05/2011 22:31

if i could have added cheryl cole in the thread title i would be a billionaire by now

OP posts:
fairydoll · 29/05/2011 22:37

At least the soldiers chose to do this for a career. What about the poor civilians being killed, maimed orphaned and widowed?

TheFlyingOnion · 29/05/2011 22:40

well yes, I suppose people who join the army know what they're signing up for....

fairydoll · 29/05/2011 22:49

i am not of course saying that I don't feel sad about the deaths of soldiers, just that the civilians have no choice in the matter

Grabaspoon · 29/05/2011 22:52

Yes, I too think you worded the thread wrongly however I agree I also hate tuning intot the news to hear that 1 more soldier has been killed. I live in an army community where we have just finished a tour of duty in Afghanistan and I am so thankful to soldiers who are prepared to put their lives on the line, lose precious time with their children/family, who fight something that most people don't agree with and are in a role where people don't value them for all the above. We have lost several great soldiers during our tour and I wouldn't say their life was a waste and I am sure the soldier wouldn't either - what is a waste is the fact they die fighting a war when people at home value their contribution.

I am very proud of the soldiers both male/female/young/old but I am just as proud of their families who have to cope with deployment.

imation · 29/05/2011 23:14

My dad was in Afganistan in early 90s when Soviet army also sent masses of troops over there. Tens of thousands of them died. Completely pointless war, nothing has changed there and never will.

Rhinestone · 29/05/2011 23:20

Very very badly worded title.

Primalscream · 29/05/2011 23:26

Awful thread title - whatever the sentiments.

SouthStar · 29/05/2011 23:29

What is more concerning is the young lads who join up because they want to go out to afghan. 12 years or so ago you joined up and a war like Iraq or Afghan wouldnt have even been mentioned in training.
These young lads have all the info available to them in papers, on the tv and all over the internet yet they still join...... Not because they are proud to serve their country, its simply to go to war!

Some may think this is a pointless war but there are reasons for us to be there that will eventually help our country. That being said the sooner we get our troops back, the better!!

ll31 · 29/05/2011 23:32

genuine question, grapaspoon and other posters, you say you're proud of soldiers and I can appreciate that in a personal way in that they're putting their lives on the line - but what do you think about the reasons why they're doing that? Is their any good reason for them to be in afghanistan? I'm asking, I don't know , I think probably not to be honest but without trying to hurt anyone I'm interested to why anyone thinks being in afghanistan is a good thing to do

Oh dear - SEA I read your title and thought 'WHATTTT?????' but I agree that your first post makes it clear that you are sad not bored.

TheFlyingOnion · 29/05/2011 23:38

I presume everyone who joins the army has their own reasons for doing so, if that's what you mean...

as to global reasons for why we're in Afghanistan, its pretty late so I don't think I'm going to go there....

ll31 · 29/05/2011 23:42

but surely as people are losing lives in afghanisan then we should know why - is it just that people want to be in army, need job so join army etc which makes loss of life there awful, tragic... I cant see why any western country is in afghanistan - what are reasons - is it just economic situation whih drives young men who've no other option into army which is prob "good " career but which leads to them risking lives for what?

CaveMum · 29/05/2011 23:42

We are in Afghanistan completely legitimately, there was a UN mandate.

Just to be picky, and I say this as the wife if a serving RAF officer, please don't refer to the troops as "soldiers". There are 3 services and they deserve to be referred to using the correct terms. The two lads killed yesterday were Royal Marines, that makes them Navy personnel NOT soldiers. My BiL was a Royal Marine - served in Afghan 3 years ago and saw 2 of his mates blown up - and he gets very offended if anyone calls him a soldier.

TheFlyingOnion · 29/05/2011 23:45

don't be silly, ll31, there are a million reasons why anyone would join the army and I would have thought very few had anything to do with desperate financial need??

And if they were there because of the money, why does that make their loss of life more tragic?

SouthStar · 29/05/2011 23:48

Those who want to know why we are there only have to do abit of research. For me its the dramatic effect it will have on the drug supply to the uk, for my hubby (who got back 6 days ago) its seeing the difference they have made since the last time he went out there, enabling children to go to school, access to the medical care the deserve, men having jobs they can be proud of and not jobs they are forced into.

ll31 · 29/05/2011 23:48

because if you do something because you think you've no other options and you end up dead rather than you decide to do something which you really want to do, yet you've loads of other options, and you end up dead, then truly I'd think it was sadder for the first person...

re un mandate - does that make it right = looking at un and history etc ..I don't know
