Is having pubic hair deemed unhygienic

Just following on from another thread.
Do people see others who don't shave or wax down below as unhygienic.
Personally I'm smooth below but that's my preference.
What's others views on this?

LOTM - I am fits of giggles thinking of John Milton being blind. No wonder he got a shock on his wedding night if previously he had been groping classical statues.

The poor thing.

Mumcentreplus · 26/05/2011 22:53

I'm sure many a woman was shocked at a sight of a fully hard penis on first inspection...I'm still very interested and intrigued by a mans scrotum..I mean it moves when he doesn't..freaky Grin

smartyparts · 26/05/2011 22:54

I have really done my poor dh a disservice, now everyone thinks he's some sort of svengali!

He has merely, when pressed, expressed a preference. He would never tell me to get a wax. He trims his pubes and armpits - again, the norm amongst his mates.

Do I live in Stepford? How many of you lot enjoy your hairy legs and armpits and let it all hang out? I don't like hairy legs and nor does he. Blimey - outrageous Hmm

smartypants - it was your use of the word 'revolting' which did him the disservice.

Weeks Days can go by in winter when I don't de-fluff. DH is bothered, ooh, about zilch.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 26/05/2011 22:59

Grin Loving the idea of John Milton having a sneaky grope at statues ... makes him seem a whole lot more human.

Not that it's hugely relevant, except I wonder if it might be you've got the Johns confused, but John Knox, the Protestant reformer, reputedly thought his young wife had a 'seizure' on their wedding night and was very concerned for her health.

Seizures, eh? Grin

nineyearoldsarerude · 26/05/2011 22:59

I find it really really weird that men are trimming themselves!

In winter I'm hairy as hell..but my hell is probably different from others...

smarty does your DH shave his legs too?

TheCrackFox · 26/05/2011 23:02

Seizures?

He just found a way to brag about what a sex God he was without upsetting all his presbyterian mates.

seeker · 26/05/2011 23:04

OK. I am officially the oldest mumsnetter.

I don't let hair show when I have clothes on. So either a little hair round the edges has to go or I get bigger pants.

But ( and here is where I reveal myself as a humourless feminist) - there is no way I ould remove my body hair solely to please a man. And I would not, under any circumstances remove all my pubic hair - women should look like women and pre pubescent girls should look like pre pubescent girls. I don't like young girls wearing boob tubes and thongs - why would I like adult women with no pubic hair?

smartyparts · 26/05/2011 23:08

No! He has hairy legs.

I have a friend who is a professional sportsman. He's a bit older than the rest of the lads, and reports that he is the only one who has chest/back/armpit hair. He is constantly ribbed for his au natural state!

My beautician spend lots of her time doing blokes backs and chests. It's not just women - the whole body hair tide is changing!

smallwhitewolf - yes, me too! I knew a guy who said stretchmarks actually made him feel ill and he couldn't touch his girlfriend's ... Confused It really hit me how crappy that must have been for her feeling he reacted like that.

Mumcentreplus · 26/05/2011 23:10

seeker I am with you..my personal opinion is that men who insist a woman should be hair-less have way too much time on their hands and worry me weirdypre-pube..my DD who is 9 has hairs ...

LRDTheFeministDragon · 26/05/2011 23:11

Ooops, that was a bad cross-post! Blush

That was NOT me agreeing enthusiastically with smallwhitecat going upstairs for a quickie, honest guv!

floweryblue · 26/05/2011 23:16

LRD I don't look at a lot of porn, the last time I've actually looked at any would probably have been about 10 years ago, DP doesn't seem to have any around. The last time I looked, a small amount of hair was in evidence.

Since then I have seen celebs, eg Britney Spears, wearing jeans which are so low slung that if she was me she would have had to some serious depilation!

That's why I think it is more fashion than porn driving this trend.

TheCrackFox · 26/05/2011 23:17

The fashion started in the porn industry.

nailak · 26/05/2011 23:18

for everyone who is sayin this is a result of porn and fashion, this may be the case, but are you also aware that shavin or pluckin pubic hair has been the norm in many cultures for 100's of years? in some cultures females from puberty are told to remove hair after every period when they have their end of period bath.

Mumcentreplus · 26/05/2011 23:18

I find men who wax are scary or i pity them..i actually respect a man who just is..
men have not had to suffer from this beauty ideal until now..a man can care for himself without shaving and waxing within an inch of his life...
You bathe,you spray,you moisturise,you aftershave..simple

floweryblue · 26/05/2011 23:21

Or did porn follow fashion?

LRDTheFeministDragon · 26/05/2011 23:23

I hadn't thought of that flowery - that makes sense too. I was thinking when you mentioned fashion you meant, as in catwalk fashion and I did find that odd.

I agree with crackfox that this fashion comes from the porn industry originally, but it's likely lots of people don't immediately connect the two for the reasons you state.

Harder to justify male reactions against women with hair, though - I suppose it is possible they've assumed all women shave it all off based on pictures of mainly clothed celebs, but seems unlikely to me.
