Is having pubic hair deemed unhygienic

Just following on from another thread.
Do people see others who don't shave or wax down below as unhygienic.
Personally I'm smooth below but that's my preference.
What's others views on this?

i think pubic hair has the same function as eyebrows, stop sweat and dirt getting into your vagina. it catches it all and then you wash it off.

however there is no excuse for a muffro.

Here is another dimension which has not been mentioned.... Pubic hair reveals the true colour of the hair on your head! So you can't pass yourself off as a natural blonde if your short and curlies are pitch black.......
Unles you dye your pubes too - lol

StayingDavidTenantsGirl - sorry, I am such an idiot, you replied to me on page 1 and I studiously ignored you. Blush If by some remote chance you're still reading and see this, sorry, I dunno how I missed that.

I didn't mean to come across as if shaving is automatically A Bad Thing; if it works for you, go for it. I just get so fed up (and insulted by) the assumption that it's necessarily unhygienic to not shave ... it's a really illogical assumption unless there are specific reasons like what you said and does piss me off no end!

Sorry, I really doubt you'll see this but I felt rude when I re-read the thread. Smile

RevoltingPeasant · 25/05/2011 21:55

Poor RunAway :(

Not that it's any consolation, but that happens to me too, albeit on a much smaller scale - no matter how much I exfoliate I always get one hurty one.

Does this not happen to anyone else?? I like it better shaved but have just stopped bothering.

thenameiwantedwastaken · 25/05/2011 22:16

Come on, it's your bum. It's never going to be constantly completely squeaky clean and spotless, with or without hair. Live with it!

fifi25 · 25/05/2011 22:19

dont think so, i have an 80's retro bush and it seems fine

singersgirl · 25/05/2011 22:21

Why would anyone be embarrassed by pubic hair? It's a sign of sexual maturity. And why would it be more hygienic without hair? The hair's there to protect a delicate area. Shaving or waxing are much more likely to introduce infection than a normal healthy bush. Honestly, the idea that muff-shaving is normal is so weird to me (mid 40s).

InAStateOfReflux · 25/05/2011 22:27

lesley33 I was warned not to shave before my CS as if I gave myself a small cut this could be an infection risk. Still had a bit of a trim though - not really easy as I couldn't really see it...

fifi25 · 25/05/2011 22:29

My friends mam used to trim her muff when she was pregnant. Shes 15years younger than me though. I would not dare ask my mam to shave my minnie Shock

JoniRules · 25/05/2011 22:58

I don't think it's unhygenic at all. That's just what we're taught culturally as women about our body and bodyhair. I shave legs and armpits but cannot be arsed at all with down below. Too wuss to wax also

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 25/05/2011 23:18

LRD - I am still reading this thread from time to time, and just spotted your post. Please don't worry - I assumed you had missed my comment, and definitely don't think you were being rude. I agree totally that it should be a matter of choice, and both can be equally hygienic. Smile

I will say this, though - it is an absolute bugger of a place to have itchy, stubbly regrowth! Blush

Sleepingonthebus · 25/05/2011 23:26

Unhygienic? I must be a clarty bitch then Grin

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 25/05/2011 23:27

Maryz

I feel cleaner when my ladygarden has been deforested. However I don't shave my head, because my head doesn't provide an exit for vaginal secretions, menstrual blood or urine.

Dh sometimes shaves round his tackle - he likes the feel of it, and I think it looks nice.

I do get stubbly if I don't shave daily, but as dh rarely goes down on me (I don't like it that much), reverse stubble rash isn't a problem.

HTH. Smile

I think its the younger woman who shave it all of so why dont we do a survey

Me 34 quite a big bush - shave it for special occassions and holidays when i have to wear a bikini. Not all off, just the sides trimmed into a neat triangle

LRDTheFeministDragon · 25/05/2011 23:37

Grin I am impressed with your tenancity then, SDTG.

The stubble is tempting me to give up on the underarms at the moment - it bloody hurts!

I wonder, d'you think all this is is some of us have tougher skin than others?

Eurostar · 25/05/2011 23:41

Just amazing how many people have become conditioned to believe that pubic hair is unhygenic. All hail to the power of the porn industry.

Do people who shave have lower incidences of STDs, thrush, non specific infections? I think not.... Are they more at risk of infection through having breaks in the skin...I think yes. Do hospitals discourage shaving before childbirth...yes

I agree that oral can feel better on shaved genitals and can be more pleasant to give as well as receive - but this has nothing to do with a warped perception about hygiene

WeirdAcronymNotKnown · 25/05/2011 23:47

Hmm I'm overall of the opinion "whatever works for you, do it" but I do agree with seeker about the cultural influences.

I tried shaving once, as did DH, and it was weird. It did feel really juvenile, though I admit I am more sensitive to that because I was sexually abused as a young child.

Now, I am very lazy and barely do any 'gardening'. Periods - a bit of a faff but hey, Femfresh wash/wipes are your friends :o

As for the oral sex thing - really really not a problem for DH :)

OTOH I really don't like any underarm hair because it feels sweaty. DH shaves his too, he only started it on a dare but found it much more comfortable.

startail · 25/05/2011 23:52

It takes me long enough to shave my legs. I am not adding another job to the list.
Forest edges get trimmed for swimming and that's it.

MillyR · 25/05/2011 23:57

I think it must be a regional thing (or an urban thing) as well as an age thing. Our local beautician does not do Hollywood or brazilian bikini waxes, despite one of the beauticians being in there 20s and many of the clients being in their 20s. She says it isn't 'nice' and that this isn't London.

I have never seen a bald pubic mound in any public changing area. I am only aware of the trend because of MN.

fifi25 · 26/05/2011 00:00

They all do it up my way (NE)
