Is having pubic hair deemed unhygienic

Just following on from another thread.
Do people see others who don't shave or wax down below as unhygienic.
Personally I'm smooth below but that's my preference.
What's others views on this?

I shave mine all off. Have done for nearly 10 years.

Not because my DH likes it.
Not because of porn.

I just personally feel cleaner and nicer down there with no hair. Not saying that hair is unhygienic, I just personally feel it's nicer that way.

I do not look or feel pre-pubescent!

seeker · 24/05/2011 17:53

Women shave their pubic chair because pornoigraphy - almost invariably created by men - tells them that's what women should liook like. They then rationalize this to themselves with the "it's much more hygenic" argument.

A similar argument is used about circumcision "I'm not doing this for cultural or religious reasons, which are completely illogical, I'm doing it because it's more hygenic"

TallulahBetty · 24/05/2011 17:55

Seeker. I do NOT shave because of porn. Please stop such sweeping statements.

Gay40 · 24/05/2011 17:55

Right, I've looked at a fair few in my time, and I don't like the LOOK of completely shaved but the FEEL is OK. However, neatly trimmed is the best for both look and feel.
I am always a bit Hmm when women say their men prefer them shaved. And a bit urgh.
I've not thought about the hygiene aspect, as I would say that was to do with washing. Else we all would be bald.

seeker · 24/05/2011 17:56

Excuse the typos!

taylor74 · 24/05/2011 17:58

Seeker your talking balls it's nowt to do with porn in all my years I've never seen a porn film I shave cause I like it. End of!

If it were not for porn, women would not have thought of shaving their pubic hair.

So even those women who say they do it for themselves because it is in some way "nicer" are being influenced indirectly by pornography.

fotheringhay · 24/05/2011 17:59

I think RunAwayWife has told us all we need to know on this subject!

Surely the point of being hygenic is to avoid getting ill/repulsing people? Well has anyone ever got ill from having natural pubes? And if anyone is repulsed by pubes, then they need to go and have a long serious talk with themselves.

Seeker is absolutely right.

the idea of doing it didn't spring into their heads from nowhere, it was part of the wider culture in this country which it entered via porn.

there are other cultures where it has been done for centuries without the porn connection but in the UK it become mainstream as a result of porn also becoming mainstream.

30 years ago hardly anyone here was doing it.

fotheringhay · 24/05/2011 18:11

Imagine if there was a backlash, and you didnt even have to tidy up the bikini line for swimming.

We could sit down and have a nice Brew in the time saved.

SybilBeddows · 24/05/2011 18:14

I don't.

and no-one actually has to Wink

SybilBeddows · 24/05/2011 18:16

all you have to do is not do it, it's really easy!

LidlPrincess · 24/05/2011 18:16

Seeker, SybilBeddows, I think I agree!

hairylights · 24/05/2011 18:18

Pubic hair is there to protect sensitive areas from infection.

AKissIsNotAContract · 24/05/2011 18:19

I wax, my partner shaves. I wish he would let me wax his balls but he won't.

If, as SybilBeddows says, some cultures have been doing it for centuries, it could well be to do with globalisation rather than porn. I starting shaving at about 14 before porn was something I was interested in.

fotheringhay · 24/05/2011 18:19

I'm not that brave, but I have recently bought a long swimsuit which covers it anyway.

The pressure to "conform" weighs more heavily on some than others.

madonnawhore · 24/05/2011 18:32

My mum had a massive bush and no shame, and so she was always fucking parading it around the house when I was a teenager and desperately awkward and shy about privacy.

Not to get too psychoanalytical about it, but because I felt such acute embarrassment at having what I felt were my boundaries violated (although I'm sure she felt she was being very 'right on'), I found the hair repulsive and wished she'd just put it away.

As a result I prefer to keep my own 'hairstyle' very minimal. Enough on top to look like a woman, but I wax my bikini line and do the underneath too. It feels fantastic when it's just been done.

Gay40 · 24/05/2011 19:00

Definitely quote of the week "My mum had a massive bush and no shame."

RunAwayWife · 24/05/2011 19:06

I was on holiday a few weeks ago and there was a woman laying on a sunbed by the pool who took a razor out of her beach bag and proceeded to tidy her lady garden in full view if everyone before putting the razor back in the bag Shock

madonnawhore · 24/05/2011 19:10

RunAwayWife if my mum wasn't dead I would have said that that could be her! That's exactly the kind of thing she'd do.

Gay40 :o

Gay40 · 24/05/2011 19:12

But to be fair, anything your (generic your) mum gets out needs to stay away.

cyb · 24/05/2011 19:15

One day having hair on our heads wil be seen as unhygenic/unsexy and we'll all be swanning around like Telly Savales

RunAwayWife · 24/05/2011 19:15

I remember my ex SIL stripping off in front of me and she had the most massive Ginger bush, I was scared!!!!

As I sit here with a hot water bottle on my lady parts and walk like I have crapped myself to get water to take the antibiotics I can understand now why she never tamed the beast

sayithowitis · 24/05/2011 19:21

blushandbashful, I use one of these which came with a handy little attachment that goes over the main blade to keep my 'personal' hair trim without getting rid of it completely. Very easy to use ( daily in the shower) and so far ( after 3 years) no mishaps. It's rechargeable and can be cleaned under the shower.

I am happy to keep things in trim, but would feel very uncomfortable at being clean shaven down there. Maybe to do with my age though, I am around 50.
