Is having pubic hair deemed unhygienic

Just following on from another thread.
Do people see others who don't shave or wax down below as unhygienic.
Personally I'm smooth below but that's my preference.
What's others views on this?

Squeakytoy said: so it is easier to keep the area cleaner without a load of hair in my view. Wow, you really MUST have a lot of hair down there if it's blocking your view ;-)

I am 40 and do not shave. I can't see how it can be more hygienic to get rid of the hair. Where do the secretions go then? Just on your pants? That's got to be more unhygienic than it being "caught" by the hair.

Surely waxing or shaving increases the risk of infection.

I think washing and wearing clean undies is enough.

I really DO NOT want my DS thinking that any girl friends he has are unclean if they do not shave.

squeakytoy · 24/05/2011 13:18

Bonkers Grin

Its not quite "scary movie"....

WoTmania · 24/05/2011 13:25

Lesley33 - that's very interesting and 'logical' Grin about lower infection levels., Makes sense as the hair is surely there to trap nasties before they can get anywhere near.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 24/05/2011 13:26

Lesley33 - the reason that hospitals' policies on shaving changed is because research found that shaving brought up bacteria from below the surface of the skin that could then infect the wound.

When I last worked as an operating theatre nurse we did a minimum shave where neccessary in theatre and then antiseptic prep was applied straight afterwards.

QuackQuackSqueak · 24/05/2011 13:29

If it is not unhygienic to have hair, how come surgeons and anyone involved in food prep cover their hair?

Do they put little hat on their fannys?

LindenAvery · 24/05/2011 13:37

Some really bizarre postings here - what ever works for you is probably the line to stick to - but FWIW - having been no doubt scarred for life from a microbiology practical at uni most, if not all, body hair is germ free due to the normal hygiene (showering/washing) people follow.

It is actually the skin surface that's the breeding ground - so strange as it may seem a hairless skin surface is likely to be dirtier than a hairy one.

QuackQuackSqueak · 24/05/2011 13:41

Uergh! Dirty bald fannys! Grin

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 13:54

"If it is not unhygienic to have hair, how come surgeons and anyone involved in food prep cover their hair?"

that would be to prevent hair falling into food/open wounds

nothing to do with it being unhygienic Hmm

presumably you shave your head then squeakytoy if it's so unhygienic Confused

Kallista · 24/05/2011 14:02

I'm 34, always shave my groin + to top of legs (basically i remove any hair that wouldn't be covered by brief bikini bottoms.
I keep the rest of the pubic hair is neatly trimmed.
For hygiene i shower once or twice a day. On my period i change towels very regularly + use wet wipes often.
I think: female pubic hair is a sign of sexual maturity; it looks ok and is hygienic as long as it is clean and neat; and IME once a man gets to that area then pubic hair is the last thing on his mind ;) .

Thornykate · 24/05/2011 14:04

What sort of infections are more common post childbirth for women who remove hair? Am v interested as due to give birth soon, thanks.

QuackQuackSqueak · 24/05/2011 14:14

When I haven't trimmed for a while my DP thinks it makes me look a bit like a woman in a dirty french film (think he has a particular film in mind but not sure what it is) and he likes it!

AngryFeet · 24/05/2011 14:19

Haven't read the whole thread but I hate this idea that if you wax it is an idea you got from porn Hmm. I have waxed since I was a teenager as I am quite hairy and shaving made the hairs get really thick and dark to the point that I had to shave my thighs daily. Personally since I have so much hair it makes me feel uncomfortable so I have it waxed off. I don't do it to turn men on I do it for myself.

shadycharacter · 24/05/2011 14:34

Angryfeet I agree. I hate that some people just cannot get their head around the fact that no hair is simply more comfy for some women. It's nothing to do with conforming or wanting to look like a 10 yr old or trying to be more attractive to men for me, I just cannot stand having hair down there, it's so itchy and just looks untidy to me so I shave it all off. Would love to have it waxed instead but I'm a big wimp.

Also in answer to the question about mens pubes, yes I do think they're unhygienic. Pee leaks from the penis into their pants then throughout the day the pubes rub all over the pee pants and then they take the pants off and their pissy pubes fall out everywhere...nice. That said, an ex of mine once shaved his pubes off and I couldn't go near him, just looked/felt so very wrong.

It isn't about individuals getting the idea from porn though.

But getting rid of the whole lot used to be seen as quite unusual, and it's now seen as quite normal, so there really has been a shift. And the shift probably does correlate to the rise in availability of internet porn, it's not the only factor though.

Although FWIW I once read a beautifully explicit short story about a girl whose lover used comb out her bush till it looked like a dandelion clock and then blow very gently... and I've wanted to grow mine ever since Wink

taylor74 · 24/05/2011 15:35

I wasn't say it was unhygienic I was just after some views. I shave because I like it and so does my DH. It's not a hygiene thing for me.

OP posts:
taylor74 · 24/05/2011 15:38

And mines nothing to do with porn I do it as I like it. I don't watch porn so
Wouldn't have a clue what these girls look like or even care if I'm
Honest and to compare someone who shaves and is smooth below to a child is fucking silly.

flyingspaghettimonster · 24/05/2011 15:58

I used to shave it a lot, but when pregnant last time I developed a horrific rash of spots that had me wondering if it was some kind of horrible STD (my Nana always warned me about toilet seats in public restrooms)... I was assured by the gynae that it was just a reaction to shaving and I needed to stop... it was a year before I dared do it again.

I agree that untrimmed au natural bushes must be unhygenic if you use a sanitary towel rather than tampon - you'd get dry blood in the hair...

I think I would ideally like no hair at all, but hate the regrowth, so go for a combo...

xkittyx · 24/05/2011 17:27

But surely better dried blood on the hair than directly on the bits where you'd get it if you were shaved/waxed and using a towel?
Btw someone said further back about shaving under the arms being more hygienic. I don't believe that is the case either. I often leave mine a week or two if I'm not going to be bearing my underarms. Makes no difference. It's just for aesthetics.
