Does anybody actually know anyone who had an ELCS just because they thought they were "too posh to push"?

Just watching the Wright stuff. One of the hot topics is that apparently ELCS rates being performed by the NHS are rising because people are deciding they are "too posh to push" and it's costing the NHS lots of money. Hmm

They are suggesting that these women should be offered psychiatric counselling to bring them round to the idea of having a vaginal birth.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I was given an ELCS because my dd was breech and was in fact strongly advised to (not given much choice in fact) and anyone else I know who's had one has been offered it because of significant trauma or complications in a previous birth.

I have never however met a woman who insisted on one on the NHS just cause she didn't fancy pushing it out of her fanny, and I doubt the NHS would go with this anyway tbh...

And if they're talking about women who have real fears and emotional distress regarding child-birth, then yes of course lets force the hysterical wench to push it out, does she not know how much money she's costing the NHS? Hmm

Oh how I love the way the media portray these issues...[sigh] Yes perhaps ELCS rates are rising and perhaps this should be addressed in some way, but to suggest it is for such fickle reasons is so juvenile. Angry Perhaps it is the HCPs fault and not the whole female population who are apparently too cowardly to push their babies out?

jonirules - one of my less tactful friends, after dd's birth said 'better luck next time for a natural birth' as if that was the pinnacle of achievment! i dont care and i dont judge. what i'd like next time is a healthy baby, just like dd :)

the elcs sounds great btw

teaforone · 28/05/2011 20:59

it takes up doctors and nurses time who could be dealing with life threating cases instead they are having thousdands of mummys who DONT want to push ..... i totally understand if they need it but if they dnt why have it done ......

Baby2b · 28/05/2011 21:00

havepatience I'm sorry for your horrid experience. It appears to be another case of different approaches depending on your hospital and the part of the country u live in.

BagofHolly · 28/05/2011 21:00

"Because they shouldn't. Why should they?"
(My punctuation)

With a well reasoned argument like that, there's no challenge, is there?

[head explodes]

teaforone · 28/05/2011 21:00

I was giving my thoughts on women who just dont want to push
Which i stand by but i never said it makes them a bad mother!!!

K999 · 28/05/2011 21:01

Because it is there right blahblah .......

sungirltan · 28/05/2011 21:02

lots of procedures are done on the nhs that dont strictly constitute 'need'. i dont begrudge anyone those either.

NellieForbush · 28/05/2011 21:02

why should they?
Well that's easy - because they want one.

So its about money?

xstitch · 28/05/2011 21:03

teaforone as i have said before if you want to understand what the later posts are referring to read the whole thread. I was talking about views on C sections expressed in court. The rest was me answering the questions of others. If you don't want to read all the posts don't but then you can't complain if you can't keep up.

I asked if you were my XH's lawyer because she presents the same condescending attitude you do, completely devoid of compassion. Which Incidentally is a much more valuable quality than the ability give birth vaginally.

cerealqueen · 28/05/2011 21:03

I knew somebody who had her first as a CS because the baby's head was too big so she must have been advised by a somebody in that?

No, you gave opinions. Which, despite them being based on your own experience rather than clinical need, or published medical studies, or the learned opinion of eminent physicians, you stand by, in the face of 20 pages telling you differently.
Your posts lead me to the conclusion that you are either very thick, or a bored 14 year old.

why would you go through court over a c section you wouldnt dont be daft .........................

and no its not about money its about the doctors having better things to do then to deal with silly women who dont like pain!!!

BagofHolly · 28/05/2011 21:06

teaforone, do us all a favour and go back to texting your classmates. It's very dull now.

teaforone · 28/05/2011 21:07

IM NOT saying noone should have one
I was just saying only if they are needed good greif !!!

HavePatience · 28/05/2011 21:07

teaforone - because I have read things on here implying that it you want the best for your baby then you at least try for vaginal birth. I am just sensitive about it, that's all.

xstitch :( How awful.

CurrySpice · 28/05/2011 21:08

I believe we are programmed to forget the pain and trauma of birth in order to ensure the human race continues

I have had two emergency c-sections

I cannot even begin to describe how hard I tried to have DD2 "naturally" (how I hate that turn of phrase Angry) but it was not to be. It still makes me a bit tearful now to be honest :(

xStritch I am consistently amazed by the terrible things your ex has put you through, I truly am. What a twunt he sounds Angry

I don't know anyone who has had a section because they couldn't be bothered

teaforone · 28/05/2011 21:08

haha bagofholly your very strange
Im sorry im only 23 if that makes my a teenage mummy in your eyes well im sorry but i have every right to my thoughts as anyone else i do not belive i have said anything wrong

CurrySpice · 28/05/2011 21:09

Sorry pressed post too soon.

I think the "too posh to push" thing is a myth and a stick to beat wone who have had sections with

xstitch · 28/05/2011 21:09

OH FFS teaforone read the thread properly I didn't go to court I was taken to court by my XH looking for full custody of dd and for me to have no access. The fact that I had a C-section was the first in their long line of insults to humiliate me with in the witness box.
