Sorry for picking on a particular quote, but I saw this on another thread, and I wondered what other people thought. Personally - I agree that generally, openly judging other people isn't a nice thing to do. Also it could be hypocritical - nobody is perfect, and there could be an area of your life that would be judged, too. However, I do think that to some extent it is human nature to judge. Do some people honestly never make a private judgement about the actions of someone else? Be it a friend or a total stranger? I have become less judgey since becoming a parent myself, and since reading mumsnet! But I can honestly say I do still judge sometimes and I can't imagine anyone who doesn't, ever. So do you exist, total non-judgers? Because you are better people than I am!

And when it comes to judging the things we do, rather than how we look, I don't have such a problem with that. As I said earlier I'd judge someone for dropping litter, I would thing them selfish and lazy. I wouldn't judge someone for having tattoos and piercings although I guess I'd register that they had them.

It looks like you've given somebody food for thought, Ormirian, perhaps the OP of it couldn't think of something interesting to write this morning?

The thread judging how people can let themselves get so fat is an excellent example of why judging/comparing/benchmarking others against our own perceived higher standards is a process in vanity and nothing whatsoever to do with keeping society 'in check' as has been suggested further up this thread.

Judge people all you like; I maintain that it says more about you and your own insecurities than it does about the person you're judging. It doesn't serve any real purpose, does it? I'd be genuinely interested in hearing how being 'judgey' has ever influenced anybody to change their behaviour.

hairfullofsnakes · 17/05/2011 13:10

Of course it can influence people to change their behaviour! What is so terrible about judging a woman who choses to smoke when pregnant?! If in others judging her it helps her give up them that's good. And should a woman feel bad about smoking during pregnancy? Of course she should - this 'feel no guilt, do what you like' way of thinking is bollocks. Do what you like when it is just you but if you chose to Carry a baby at least be repsonsible and stop smoking

'helps her' to give up.

yeah, right. That's exactly what people with higher degrees and years of study and practise in public health say is the evidence-based way to encourage people to stop smoking. Condemn them. Works every time. That's why there are no smokers left in this country... Hmm

What you actually mean is, you enjoy getting your kicks sneering at someone else and feeling holier than them. You don't actually care about helping them, you don't actually have a clue about the best ways to help someone give up smoking, you just like feeling superior.

hairfullofsnakes · 17/05/2011 23:09

Well thankfully you are talking bollocks Edam as I am an ex smoker and I do know what I'm talking about so have a Biscuit and be on your merry way. Love th boring way people like you always pull out the 'you are being superior' line - how utterly predictable and boring
