I recently saw the most PECULIAR thing...

I saw the oddest thing the other day and can't stop thinking about what in the name of all that's holy and precious was going on. AIBU to ask you what you think, so I can get some sleep?

I was waiting for someone outside the British Library on Euston Rd. Beside me a casually dressed man was making a placating phone call, and anxiously watching the road. He was holding a clipboard and a small white envelope, and carrying an ordinary blue cool-box, such as you might use for a picnic.

Eventually a flustered looking couple turned up. They were both in their early 40s, and looked fairly well-to-do. They were obviously rather anxious, possibly because they were late, and relieved to see Clipboard Man. I couldn't hear what they were saying no matter how hard I tried, but I could see Clipboard Man being sort of authoritative and reassuring. He kept gesturing to the cool-box, and handed over the envelope with some ceremony. The woman said nothing, only continued to look rather anxious.

Clipboard Man then hailed a cab. The man in the couple protested mildly, but the other man said something along the lines of it all being sorted and paid for, and ushered the woman in. She sat on the edge of the seat clutching the white envelope. Clipboard man leaned into the cab to give the driver instructions, and had what looked like a reassuring and authoritative word with the man. The man patted Clipboard Man's shoulder once or twice in a gesture that looked sort of grateful, in a business-like fashion, then got into the cab next to his partner. Clipboard Man then put the cool-box onto the floor of the cab, slammed the door, had one last brisk word with the driver, and waved the cab off.

He then made one or two notes on the clipboard, and hurried back along the Euston Rd without looking back.

WTF was that all about then?! I damn nearly ran after Clipboard Man to ask, but thought if there was owt dodgy going on I might be found strung up by piano wire somewhere...

Ariesgirl, absolutely, we all make light of things that are horrific, it's a coping mechanism!
When my youngest DD was on a life support maching with meningitis, the doctors were saying "It's minute by minute" and we were saying "Yes, well, anyway DD, when you're better we'll go on holiday and have a party".
Because to think about what they were saying was just too too much.

MavisG · 16/05/2011 11:30

OP, you could phone the non-emergency number for the police. See what they say.

Ariesgirl · 16/05/2011 11:31

Oh Luna :(

What an awful situation. I don't think I dare ask how everything turned out. I hope it was a good outcome.

And what Bloofer said - is there any kind of campaign going on to uncover such horror? I think another reason why we make jokes about awfulness is the utter helplessness. There are so many things out there which are horrific and we feel we can't do anything about them.

BlooferLady · 16/05/2011 11:31

Gracious, hope your DD is fully recovered now Luna...

Aries!!!! An Oyster Card not a fucking oyster, you Cornish fool! Grin

PS I do have an oyster card, Finally. It is gathering dust somewhere. And I always get it wrong and get thrown off buses when attempting to use it.

BlooferLady · 16/05/2011 11:32

Mavis I think I might speak to DH and see what he thinks. I did tell him all about it and he said he didn't think that, if he'd been on duty, there would have been enough to stop them, but it did give him pause for thought...

BlooferLady · 16/05/2011 11:34

Obviously if I do inform the police I wouldn't own up to it here

Ariesgirl · 16/05/2011 11:38

No way. The chiselled cheekboned, hollow-eyed, gravelly voiced Slav armed with his silencer would come after you as well.

Lunabelly · 16/05/2011 11:38

Ariesgirl, she's fine! She lost some flesh but no amputations. She amazed the doctors because they'd never seen anyone who'd had it that badly and not need at least multiple amputations. She was 13 months old, so she doesn't remember anything of it, thank goodness.

OP - didn't you say your DH is a copper? Have a word with him, if only for him to tell you that we are all mad.

Google illegal organ harvesting and words to that effect. It's not pretty.

Ariesgirl · 16/05/2011 11:42

My niece had meningitis and was very, very, very poorly indeed. Again, a full recovery. Babies are remarkable creatures

BlooferLady · 16/05/2011 11:44

Yar Luna - I mentioned it to him in passing but he was playing World of Warcraft occupied with Busy and Important Matters, so was mildly intrigued but not as much as me/us. I shall bend his ear about it later. Bet he can't wait!

Bloofer YOU TOLD the police ? I am working with a bunch of total amateurs. The police will just bombard you with facts until you get all confused and lose sight of the truth about organ inserting despots th

It's too late bloofer you have unleashed something truly and utterly threatening to mankind. We only have until midnight to reverse the inevitable

Finallyspring · 16/05/2011 12:05

Assuming you got a day return to Paddington. If it was monthly return we have a little longer < echoey beyond grave voice>

olderandwider · 16/05/2011 12:07

Bloofer - surely you missed that once in a lifetime chance to hail a cab and bark to the driver "follow that taxi".

What time of day was it? If daytime then I suggest the following scenario:

Clipboard man is a hospitality agent.
The cool box contains a bespoke picnic.
The envelope is tickets to an important event that requires said picnic.
The couple are late for the event, hence the need for a cab.

All the reassurance is to calm the woman who fears they are going to miss the Big Event.

Or, it's a trafficked heart Grin

JonahB · 16/05/2011 12:18

I really want to return to the eybrows drawn on a newborn baby. My mind is boggling!!!!

Porkchop - could you share any more details? What colour eyebrow pencil was used? Did the baby have hair to colour match the drawn-in eyebrows to?

Finallyspring · 16/05/2011 12:27

Yes move on to eyebrows drawn on babies

I had an idea to make and sell wigs for babies once. My daughters had no hair at all until they were toddlers.

Finallyspring · 16/05/2011 12:30

Bloofer. I'll just carry on about eyebrows and wigs for babies so that everyone thinks things are back to normal.

Meanwhile, slip into the command centre. Sit down at control panel and put on tin foil hat. Tune into despots wavelength and monitor. I feel sure now that this has nothing to do with organs or sperm. No, nothing at all. It is the ebola virus thing. Definitely

GollyHolightly · 16/05/2011 14:29

Finallyspring sadly you're too late. Someone has done it already

janeoh · 16/05/2011 14:41

Have just seen clipboard man on Byres road in Glasgow. Call off the search down there girls. Meanwhile, all "respectable couples of a certain age" beware of being bundled into taxis with mystery packages...

MadeInChinaBaby · 16/05/2011 14:43

It was an ice box full of baby eyebrows.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 16/05/2011 14:52

If it was an illegal kidney (or other organ) perhaps the envelope contained the receipt and warranty (5 years parts and labour). Grin

WereOffToSeeTheWizard · 16/05/2011 14:55

Just marking my place

Or am I ?

Be afraid.... be VERY afraid

Finallyspring · 16/05/2011 16:02

Really gutted I didn't get there first with the baby wigs idea. Though still a gap in the market for more tasteful styles I think. More of the type of wigs to match Boden clothes. Still waiting to hear about the painted on eyebrows. Or was it a joke ? I wish MN ers were a bit more serious sometimes
