to be fed up with the amounts of shoes everyone needs

Ds - school shoes, football boots, running spikes, nice trainers, scruffy trainers, wellies, flip-flops
Dd1 - school shoes, PE trainers, home trainers, white lace-up plimsols, black lace-up plimsols, dressy shoes, beachy shoes, wellies
Dd2 - trainers, sandals, wellies, white lace-up plimsols, black lace-up plimsols, nursery indoor shoes

That's an obscene amount! Various rants involved. We need so many pairs of plimsols for dance shows. They must be lace-up, so they can put different colour laces in. Dd1 has co-ordination problems and dd2 is too young, so they can't use these for PE or nursery because they have to do them themselves. Therefore need velcro ones too

Wellies, not particularly well used, but you can guarantee that as soon as someone doesn't have a pair that fits, they will immediately have a trip come up with wellies essential, despite the fact the ground is bone-dry and no rain forecast.

Dressy shoes, again the minute they don't fit (but haven't been worn for 6 months) you get an invite to a wedding. Dd1 can't use school shoes, because the only school shoes we could get supportive enough are like black trainers.

Running spikes, ds is very talented at long jump, but rarely gets the opportunity to do it, but on the odd occasion he does spikes are the difference between 1st and 10th place.

And of course all this stuff gets grown out of continuously. Do the rest of you have the same constant demand for shoes? I personally own 2 pairs of shoes.

scottishmummy · 14/05/2011 18:53

scottishmummy · 14/05/2011 18:54

sports and activities need shoes - sorry.

i have hiking boots for proper munro climbing (often in winter), waterproof boots for walking in snow and camping and splashing around in puddles, running shoes for on-road and off-road for, well, running, cycling shoes with clips in them for cycling (actually two pairs - one big, warm and waterproof for winter and one lighter pair for summer).

i also have casual shoes, boots, sandals and a couple of pairs of 'posh' shoes.

nobody 'needs' more than two pairs of shoes but nobody 'needs' to do athletics, dancing, cycling, etc. etc...

dealer · 14/05/2011 19:03

I do a lot of walking, and my mum at some point persuaded me i needed some proper walking shoes, so i got them especially to go to chile with, and i detested them and ended up walking through chile in trainers. They just made my feet far too rigid.
I cycle, but I don't know anything about clips
I play basketball, and do wonder whether having some proper boots might help my play, but I'm so pants anyway I doubt it, and I can't really justify the cost for 2 hours a week.

All this stuff must cost some of you an awful lot.

If you're happy with that OP then good for you :o I take my hat off to you in many ways, I really do

I too go to the hairdressers often (I have highlights and regularly go for a blow dry), I have more shoes than anyone has dared admit so far on this thread, and I spent last weekend with my DP in Palma without the kids

Horses for courses isn't it? We should really celebrate our differences while reserving the right to think everyone else is bonkers Wink :o

fluffles · 14/05/2011 19:10

so you go out running, cycling, hiking in your only pair of trainers and get caked in mud and soaked through, in december, and you wear your sandals until you can clean and dry the trainers??

fine. ok. but i don't think you can maintain that you are just being 'normal' and those of us who would rather change into dry shoes straight away are profilgate.

cricketballs · 14/05/2011 19:18

it gets worse when you have a teenager (male as well....) who is likes the latest fashions (buys these himself), plays a sport to a very serious level (which we pay for), plays other sports which need other types of shoes (again, we pay for) and we live in a rural area which means that he needs wellies or everything gets destroyed just by walking the dog

i dread to think what it would be like having a girl - she might want to start pinching my shoes Grin

PumpkinSnatch · 14/05/2011 19:25

I feel your pain. DD (3) has sandals, school shoes, wellies, boots and trainers. DS is just a baby so just has sandals and wellies at the mo. I have 2 pairs of shoes - one pair of ballet flats for day and heels for evening. I got all the kids from Clarks and mine from Tesco/Primark too - and they rub.

scottishmummy · 14/05/2011 19:38

im not even high maintenance.can get out door in 3Omin.et voilà
now some of the school gate wags they are high maintenance and spray tanned within an inch of their laboutins and satellite dish sunnies

dealer · 14/05/2011 19:47

At no point have I claimed to normal.

I'm not sure what the issues are with drying them though. I sometimes get wet through feet in the winter, because our depot floods very badly, and we often have to wade in up to our knees. But when I get home, just pop them on the radiator or in the airing cupboard and they're fine by the next morning.

Of course, ideally I'd have waterproof footwear, which I attempted to buy a couple of years ago and was hopeless. I've been told that the really properly waterproof ones would cost over £100, which I can't afford. (and still have the problem that they're all very rigid).

Wellies are sooooo uncomfy that I'd rather have soaking feet on balance.

scottishmummy · 14/05/2011 19:49

whatever works for you.i like shoes and accessories so 2 wouldnt cut it

PumpkinSnatch · 14/05/2011 20:01

TBH 2 pairs is fine for me. I always choose one's that go with anything so flat ballet pumps that I can wear with jeans/leggings/skirts/dresses and black heels for the evening. I don't need any kind of walking shoe/trainer because I don't walk or exercise enough.

CurrySpice · 14/05/2011 20:13

Can I ask another question of you frugal shoe types - don't they...ermmm...smell? Blush

Especially if you are consistently getting them wet and drying them out?

scottishmummy · 14/05/2011 20:19

i also store with shoe trees in,and treat them well

dealer · 14/05/2011 20:20

Occasionally, but I usually bung them through the washing machine.

OP posts:
dealer · 14/05/2011 20:20

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 14/05/2011 20:21

CurrySpice · 14/05/2011 20:22
