to be fed up with the amounts of shoes everyone needs

Ds - school shoes, football boots, running spikes, nice trainers, scruffy trainers, wellies, flip-flops
Dd1 - school shoes, PE trainers, home trainers, white lace-up plimsols, black lace-up plimsols, dressy shoes, beachy shoes, wellies
Dd2 - trainers, sandals, wellies, white lace-up plimsols, black lace-up plimsols, nursery indoor shoes

That's an obscene amount! Various rants involved. We need so many pairs of plimsols for dance shows. They must be lace-up, so they can put different colour laces in. Dd1 has co-ordination problems and dd2 is too young, so they can't use these for PE or nursery because they have to do them themselves. Therefore need velcro ones too

Wellies, not particularly well used, but you can guarantee that as soon as someone doesn't have a pair that fits, they will immediately have a trip come up with wellies essential, despite the fact the ground is bone-dry and no rain forecast.

Dressy shoes, again the minute they don't fit (but haven't been worn for 6 months) you get an invite to a wedding. Dd1 can't use school shoes, because the only school shoes we could get supportive enough are like black trainers.

Running spikes, ds is very talented at long jump, but rarely gets the opportunity to do it, but on the odd occasion he does spikes are the difference between 1st and 10th place.

And of course all this stuff gets grown out of continuously. Do the rest of you have the same constant demand for shoes? I personally own 2 pairs of shoes.

I have quite a few pairs, but mainly keep them in the wardrobe, with just two or three everyday pairs stored downstairs.

The ones that are only used an hour a week DO count, they're the ones I'm narked about. They seem to permanently need replacing, but rarely get used.

Do you need smelling salts cyb?

HeavyHeidi · 13/05/2011 22:15

I would think that surely nobody would own less than 7 - really, how do you manage? What amazing shoes are wearable all year, with all clothes, to go to all possible places and events?

oneofthosedays · 13/05/2011 22:17

See, mine have quite a few pairs but I'm a bit of a sucker for buying shoes for the kids;

DD (7) - School shoes, pumps (school), pumps (home), trainers, party shoesm wellies, 2 pairs boots, crocs and sandals.

But she is growing really slow atm.

DS (3) - Boots, shoes, trainers, converse, crocs, wellies, 2 pairs sandals (1 cheapo, 1 more dressy).

I have quite a few pairs of shoes but they're all boringly (?) practical

cyb · 13/05/2011 22:18

Yes dead I did come over all peculiar for a moment

geordieminx · 13/05/2011 22:18

I have over 70 pairs of shoes/boots/sandals.

Ds (4) has about 10... Wellies, plimsoles x 3, boots, trainers x 2, doodles, converse, flip flops.... Ok possibly more than 10 Blush

dealer · 13/05/2011 22:19

I'm a delivery driver so work in either my trainers (winter), or reefs (spring, summer, autumn).

I have to admit to detesting anything dressy, so if I'm at an event I wear black trousers and a top, with my reefs. I buy identical reefs every summer.

Ds1 (5 and a half) has school shoes, casual shoes, trainers, wellies, Doodles and plimsols(but they stay at school). He will soon have some sandals too.
Ds2 (nearly 3) has a pair of Doodles and wellies. He will also get sandals soon.

Ihave a few pairs of shoes, boots and sandals (no idea of numbers) but they vary in age from a couple of months to 8 years old.

MaureenMLove · 13/05/2011 22:23

God, I have dozens of pairs of shoes, boots and sandals!

DD has quite a few too, but always seems to have to borrow mine! Grin

CHOOGIRL · 13/05/2011 22:24

Ok - What are Reefs? Confused

theanimalswentintwobytwo · 13/05/2011 22:28

DS (1): 2 pairs shoes (that actually fit, and 4 pairs to grow into)= 6 pairs

Me: 2 pairs flat boots, 2 pairs flats, 1 pair UGLY work shoes, 1 pair stilettos (can't wear anymore) and a pair of walking boots.= 7 pairs

Not too obscene

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 13/05/2011 22:33

DD has 2 pairs of school shoes (hot weather and wet weather), plimsols, tap, ballet, trainers, boots, converse-a-likes, smart shoes, dressing up shoes, flip flops and wellies. Need to get her some sandals for the summer though.

Now that I count them up I can understand why my local shoe shop always gives me a discount...
But she is 8, so past the age when she grows out of them every season.

Likewise, I've been buying shoes in size 39 for over 20 years, and they don't wear out as fast as I buy them, so they add up. I'm not going to count now, but the fact that I have three different colours of high heels living under my desk at work, and 3 different colours of Converse may give a vague idea.

heliumballoons · 13/05/2011 22:43

Oh I used to love my reefs.

DS (6) has school shoes, trainers, velcro plimsols, wellies and sandles.

The school shoes and sandles are clarks. trainers cheap from JJB's. Plimsols ASDA £5! and wellies given to us.

Oh he also has a pair of VANS but they were bought for him by Sis and BIL as they got him a skateboard for xmas. Very glad as they have lasted for this purpose whereas he normal shoes wouldn't. They were from outlet store so not as pricy as they sound.

ME trainers, 3 x flip flops, wellies, boots, nice shoes that I don't wear. 2 pairs sandals. Blush thats lots but I do tend to buy 2/3 pairs a year but they last me so this is a collection over a period of time. Smile

DilysPrice · 13/05/2011 22:57

I quite agree helium, if I bought 4 pairs of shoes every year since I was 17, (and 4 pairs of shoes a year is not a mad Imelda Marcos shopping habit) and each year 3 of them wore out and were thrown away, then I'd have 25 pairs of shoes on my shelves by now (which is pretty close to my actual number AFAI can be arsed to count).

ilovesooty · 13/05/2011 23:16

I have several hundred pairs of shoes: not sure how many exactly.

OP Seriously, You really only own trainers and reefs? Shock

BelleDameSansMerci · 13/05/2011 23:23

I culled my shoes at the weekend. I am down the most essential 70 pairs. The rest (including one pair of unworn Guccis) are destined for the charity shop or for recycling. I didn't touch the boots (approx 12 pairs - maybe more).

My DD(3.8) has at least 10 pairs of shoes inc wellies.

The thought of managing with only two pairs of shoes makes me feel a little faint.

Popbiscuit · 13/05/2011 23:33

I was thinking about this today. What the hell did people do in the olden days? They didn't have wellies, flip-flops, trainers, sandals, crocs, ballet pumps, indoor shoes etc. Did they just wear those brown-lace up paddock-boot things all year round?

Nowadays I would say that there is a required shoe purchase EVERY TWO WEEKS (in our family of five, anyway). Shoe maintenance is a full-time job around here. Actually, that might be a good business idea...shoe PA?

BelleDameSansMerci · 13/05/2011 23:36

I think lots of people actually used to wear some form of cloggs . I've always wondered about them slipping on cobbles in the wet. They must have been lethal.
