Ds - school shoes, football boots, running spikes, nice trainers, scruffy trainers, wellies, flip-flops
Dd1 - school shoes, PE trainers, home trainers, white lace-up plimsols, black lace-up plimsols, dressy shoes, beachy shoes, wellies
Dd2 - trainers, sandals, wellies, white lace-up plimsols, black lace-up plimsols, nursery indoor shoes

That's an obscene amount! Various rants involved. We need so many pairs of plimsols for dance shows. They must be lace-up, so they can put different colour laces in. Dd1 has co-ordination problems and dd2 is too young, so they can't use these for PE or nursery because they have to do them themselves. Therefore need velcro ones too

Wellies, not particularly well used, but you can guarantee that as soon as someone doesn't have a pair that fits, they will immediately have a trip come up with wellies essential, despite the fact the ground is bone-dry and no rain forecast.

Dressy shoes, again the minute they don't fit (but haven't been worn for 6 months) you get an invite to a wedding. Dd1 can't use school shoes, because the only school shoes we could get supportive enough are like black trainers.

Running spikes, ds is very talented at long jump, but rarely gets the opportunity to do it, but on the odd occasion he does spikes are the difference between 1st and 10th place.

And of course all this stuff gets grown out of continuously. Do the rest of you have the same constant demand for shoes? I personally own 2 pairs of shoes.

Hmm, ds age 4 has trainers, shoes, snow boots, wellies. Will have sandals in the summer.

dd age 7 has school shoes, wellies, snow boots, various trainers - school and home, party shoes, flip flops, summer sandals.

PaWithABra · 14/05/2011 01:28

9 year old has school schools which double up for everyday use. A pair of trainers for skatbording and some sandles that double up for school and evryday use.....

And this seems alot to me.. Untill recently he managed perfectly well with shoes through the winter for and sandels for the summer.
ie one pair of shoes at a time.

i think you are overcomplicating thnigs

YANBU at all. I think we actually require more than 3 shoe cabinets to fit all the shoes our family has. I blame it on the fact that UK has 4 seasons so you always need a suitable pair of shoes for hot weather, cold weather, wet weather... but then I think back to my days living in the tropics and then realise that we had just as many shoes there despite not needing shoes for every season! I think I have to just come to terms with the fact that I really have Imelda Marcos syndrome...

olibeansmummy · 14/05/2011 06:14

I don't know how many pairs of shoes I have but definately more than 7. Ds has startrite shoes, adidas trainers, Etnies, cheapy trainers, crocs, sandals, wellies, ugg style boots (although he doesn't wear them much now obviously). I'm trying to find him some little grey pumps but haven't managed to find any in his size. But I love buying him shoes, I actually wish his feet would grow faster!

dealer · 14/05/2011 06:24

I wear the reefs that are totally fastened to your feet, like velcro sandals, but a bit surfier.
I just felt I ought to clarify, since lots of reefs are flip-flops and no way could I function carrying hoovers and microwaves to third floor flats in flip-flops. I'd break my neck.

ds 1(17) has 2 pairs i shoe 1 traner
Ds2 has ,(14)trainers, shoes and rugby boots
Dd(8) .Trainers, sandals ,wellies ,pilmsols for school and cloggy things for the garden .
ds3(5) trainers and shoes ( in defence he only wears 2 becuase has to fit his afos(splints in )
Me trainers and boots so yup only 2 pairs for me .

Though in defence shoes do not suffer wear and tear to the shoe leather .They are mostly for show as wheelchair user .Ooo just thought I can buy the most impratical shoes now and wear them without thinking how I am going to walk in them.

mathanxiety · 14/05/2011 06:31

DS has one pair at a time, basketball style/small craft (largest size available before he will have to have specially made shoes...), plus a pair of brown loafers and a pair of black formal shoes, a recent purchase that he needs for an upcoming occasion; they cost a fortune but he will have them for years. Boots for snow.

DD1 -- I don't even want to think about her footwear.

DD2 -- it's like Lego when she was younger.. all over the floor, everywhere. I tried to corral them under her bed but they wouldn't all fit. Now that she is earning quite a bit babysitting she spends freely online and a package arrives about every six weeks. We wear the same size so I'm not going to try to stop her.

DD3 and DD4 -- one pair each sneakers, two or three pairs of flip flops, one pair of school shoes. Pair of boots each, and snowboots.

I always handed down their shoes when they were all small (to age 7 or so).

I have quite a collection, but I really only wear two or three pairs regularly.

JemimaMop · 14/05/2011 06:45

Right there with you. My 3 DC each have:

School Shoes
School Wellies (have to be left in school)
PE trainers
School slippers (to wear in classroom)
Trainers
Football boots
Wellies
Sandals

I hate shoe shopping as they all have narrow feet (DS1 is a d, DS2 an E, DD a C!).

However I am Imelda Marcos II myself, I have no idea how many pairs of shoes I own Blush But at least I don't grow out of them!

TattyDevine · 14/05/2011 09:28

OP (Dealer) are you a man? Confused

Either way, would you seriously wear Reefs to a wedding?

Nothing wrong with only having 2 pairs of shoes, fair play to you, but its not "normal" either.

I have quite a few pairs of shoes that have built up over many years, obviously I dont grow out of them (pregnancies aside!) so they build up if you dont' only buy new ones when another set runs out. That said, I tend to live in the same two or three pairs each season now I dont work - so in summer I vary between some medium high wedge jewelled sandals for a more dressy daytime thing, or Birkenstocks for day trips and casual, I have several pairs of Birkenstocks because they are so comfy, and I like sort of embellished ones so I have some patent, some zebra with a vintage buckle, etc.

Then in winter I switch between 2 or 3 pairs of boots - slight heel for smarter look, got some flat proper boots (ankle) and then the dreaded Uggs when my cold feet dont care what other people think (but only school run/shops and home or I make myself wear something proper)

In between seasons I switch between 2 or 3 pairs of ballerinas.

The 2 or 3 pairs switch thing is really about matching or not clashing colours/themes of an outfit (it makes it sound more complicated than it is but you wouldn't wear a nautical stripe ballet pump with a floaty boho dress, but you would wear them with jeans and a crisp white shirt.

I have several pairs of high dressy heels but wear them when I go out (not as much as I used to!) and consequently I dread them because they hurt now!

LMAO at 7 pairs of shoes- I own over 20!

cumbria81 · 14/05/2011 11:28

I have smart heels, running shoes, crappy trainers and that's it. what more do you need?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 14/05/2011 11:34

I'm guessing I have about 30+ pairs of shoes but I cull and circulate a lot. In the industry I work in (soho meejaland) that is considered positively ascetic.

DS (2.5) has flip flops, trainers, shoes and wellies. I feel he doesn't have enough 'choices' but am not getting him loads for him to grow out of.

CurrySpice · 14/05/2011 11:35

How? How? How? How Csn you manage with so few shoes?!

I am genuinely fascinated and a tiny bit appalled Shock

If you have 2 pairs for work, what do you wear when you're not at work?!?!

NotJustKangaskhan · 14/05/2011 12:31

Wow, this thread has made my head spin. No one in my home (2 adults, 3 kids) owns more than 2 pairs. I really don't feel the need for more - nor see what others do with them all!

TheHumanCatapult · 14/05/2011 12:50

Tatty/curry

I do need to point out to be fair I am in a wheelchair so not going to wear any out and have got my eyes on a pair of boots ready for next winter with the most impratical heels that are not designed for walking in which is problem i do not have Grin

biryani · 14/05/2011 13:07

You seem to be overdoing it a bit, IMHO, and confusing genuine need with lifestyle needs. If you want your child to dance, then you should expect the hassle of outfits/ shoes etc. If you want your child to do athletics, then you should expect the same. My DD has:

pair open summer sandals (already bought).
trainers, which she wears to school and to football.
last year's crocs.

Im outraged because I bought her winter boots, which she has rarely worn, and older children rarely need wellies.

Could you buy/ swap/ borrow any items?

FionaJT · 14/05/2011 13:33

My dd is 6 and currently has:
black school shoes
black daps (ie plimsolls/pumps/whatever you call them) which live in school
ballet shoes
trainers
wellies
crocs
I don't really think of the ballet shoes/daps as part of her wardrobe - they are equipment! Wellies are worn frequently round here, school shoes would be brought out for any smart occasion. Trainers/crocs for playing/weekends depending on weather. All are bought for a practical purpose and used frequently, so it doesn't feel like an unreasonable amount.

fatlazymummy · 14/05/2011 13:34

No one in our house has 7 pairs of shoes. We all seem to get along quite nicely with 3 or 4 pairs each.
Ordinary trainers do for all our sporting activities [ie PE for the kids], they also wear them out of school. Then school shoes ,slippers, and sandals/crocs for the summer.
I have 1 pair each of boots, shoes and sandals. We do have to walk in all weathers so need more than 2 pairs for snow and rain.

QuackQuackBoing · 14/05/2011 13:42

How can you only have 2 pairs of shoes!

I don't have much money so often buy my shoes off Ebay or with birthday money etc but I have loads just because they have accumulated over years and years. I have a few pairs that have been bought in certain colours to go with wedding outfits etc (one every couple of years usually). Plus boots, trainers, flips flops, gardening trainers (just my old one's), sandals. Admittedly most of them are old and knackered but still.

How can you only have 2 pairs!

Blu · 14/05/2011 13:53

DS has to have special orthopaedic footwear, and so manages to do absolutely everything (he does a range of activities) from dressing up smart to fellwalking in no more than 2 pairs of footwear at any one time. One trainer-style, one black shoe style.

I v rarely buy more than 2 pairs of shoes a year: one in summer, new boots in winter - and wear them f about 3 years, so have a variety at any one time.

FoofffyShmoofffer · 14/05/2011 14:02

DS needs astro turf trainers, tap shoes and modern shoes.
DD needs Ballet shoes and Tap shoes.

I regard these as equipment/uniform. Anything needed for extra curricular doesn't fall under the catagory of just "shoes".

CurrySpice · 14/05/2011 14:07

quackquack that's what I simply cannot understand. I have a lot of shoes and will admit it may be excessive but only 2 that you wear for work? What about going out? Exercising? Funerals? Interviews? Snow? The beach? Holiday? Days out? Gardening? Surely you don't just wear the same 2 pairs of work shoes?!?

Not criticising, genuinely gobsmacked and nosy! Wink

THC I like your style :o

ElizabethHurley · 14/05/2011 14:13

THC Every cloud....? Smile

My usually practical and sensible granny had a pair of duck egg blue, ostrich skin, court shoes with the thinnest, highest heels. Shock

Her intention was to wear them when we were pushing her around in her bath chair. Grin
