DD ate all the grapes before purchase. The checkout assistant actually held up the remains before scanning and said 'What is this?' in a very disapproving voice. All that was left was a plastic bag, a stalk, and few squashed half grapes.Blush

But even worse than that, I LOST my shopping list half way around. We went back to search but it was nowhere to be found. I have to admit in all honesty that it had 'nice ham' written on it!Blush

I am mortified.

"I have no desire go through the pain that would be entailed to "teach" DD that she can't have anything until the end of the shop - and I would imagine that all the staff & customers in the shop would rather I give her something to chew on, she stays in the trolley, doesn't scream and we get out of there quicker! As soon as she is developmentally able to understand the rationale, I'll do it differently. "

but WHY do they HAVE to eat something that you've picked up off the shelf? if you know your small child can't go for longer than an hour or so without food then why on earth would you not take something with you?
it makes no sense at all.
I have 3 kids and have never had the need to feed them on the way round Sainsburys.

thisisyesterday · 07/05/2011 23:00

AND (cos i just can't stay away), OP you did say "DD ate all the grapes"

which rather implies that she ate all the grapes doesn't it? not just 15 of them.

nomorefrizz · 07/05/2011 23:05

Please tell me that Journey and Bonsoir are being ironic.

FessaEst · 08/05/2011 08:38

This - as I said earlier, I actually worry more about taking something in, and then being asked to pay for it/having no proof that it was from home not snaffled from the shelves. I would much rather make a big thing of having it in the trolley and presenting to be scanned at the checkout.

DD is very young & very mobile, and I am the opposite at the moment (heavily pregnant). I have absolutely no intention of raising a social deviant and find the moral objections to eating something before you pay for it, when you are able to and fully intend to very odd (cafes and restaurants?).

Ormirian · 08/05/2011 08:42

Perhaps MN should launch it's own range of food products Grin Mumnset Nice Ham "because real mums don't buy the slimy stuff".

How did you plan to pay for the grapes then? Surely the better plan would be to get a punnet of grapes that was priced? I think that was pretty bad actually. Sorry.

FannyPriceless · 08/05/2011 08:45

thisis Story changed? What? How can I spell this out? I picked up a tiny bunch of grapes (broken off from the large bunch on the shelf). DD ate all of them. Clear?

nomore As far as I know Bonsoir has never been ironic!Grin

ginmakesitallok · 08/05/2011 08:54

Next time why not just take a punnet of ready weighed grapes, let your DD eat away at them til her hearts content and then pay for full punnet at end???

Bad parents not programming their kids hunger Hmm Don't kids often just want to eat out of boredom and aren't supermarkets boring places for anyone never mind kids and these kids who eat out of boredom are bored in a shop full of food. Am I the only one who grasps this basic concept?

Like your style Dilysprice Smile

voodoomunkee · 08/05/2011 09:31

Sorry, I am greatly amused by the outrage, rightly or wrongly the grapes were eaten, op presented said grape packaging and the stalk was weighed. Still greatly amused by the cost of a stalk! Perhaps it was incorrect but good lord how many people are totally and utterly squeakily clean? Seem to remember somewhere in my academic past that 'mores' are subjective......

OP you have made me chuckle.

(waits to be flamed for being a slovenly parent/person with a lack of right and wrong knowledge) Wink

droves · 08/05/2011 09:43

Isnt anyone else worried that the OP let her small child eat unwashed fruit ? .
There could have been insects/flys crawling over it .
You can catch disease from unwashed fruit.
eugh .

Is this still going?? Jeez, it was a few grapes?!!!! Trust me, I have spent 20 years in the 'biz' and every supermarket in the world would rather take the few pence loss that comes with having thieving unruly children in their store than have their terrible mums shop elsewhere. Even if they shop online it is worth so much less to them - average 20% less spend online than instore. Also, if your kids are quiet and munching happily on grapes, you will spend longer in their and therefore more money.

For those of you thinking it pushes your prices up, get a grip. Loose grape pricing has always been factored to take in a high level of loss - they frequently get crushed, squished, pissed on and the like. Your grapes are expensive because they are squishy, round and small. If they were larger hard cubes that had a shelf life of 4 weeks, supermarkets would be more precious about their loss.

Security guards often want to warrant their own being there - it can be a dull job and often they feel under valued as their very presence means there is nothing for them to do. So they often seek out the toddler robbers (imagining a 2 year old in a stripy suit, black eye mask and a 'swag' bag full of grapes)!

I too have commited this 'crime', I may be back in twenty years admitting I was wrong when my kids are banged up for life after my terrible, terrible teaching!

Oh dear Priceless there seems to have been a sense of humour failure on this thread Sad

Have a Brew and ignore the lot of them. Grin

FannyPriceless · 08/05/2011 09:49

That's OK voodoo, you can join me over here on the naughty step.

I too am amazed by the discussion. I had no idea when I posted this that I was inadvertantly starting the Great Mumsnet Grapegate War of 2011. I didn't really think that through, did I? Grapes are so... controversial, aren't they?Confused

So the Failure to See the Big Picture Award goes to... oh god, there are so many I just can't name you all.

And if you knew my circumstances you would be proud of me for even making it around the supermarket in one piece by any means. It's actually a thrill not to be at the supermarket in a wheelchair! Or weeping at home crippled by PND. Big picture, people!

But that's OK - keep up with the abuse, I can take it.Grin (Although now that I am labelled a heinous criminal I will have to change my name or be shunned all over Mumsnet for the rest of my days. Crap.)

sensible words fearnelinen, get a grip MN!

Carrotsandcelery · 08/05/2011 09:51

Nah! Don't name change Priceless - hold your head high and enjoy your nice ham! Grin

voodoomunkee · 08/05/2011 09:53

Ah thanks fanny! wanna grape? I will come shopping with you, I have a fancy for some grape wreaking havoc Wink

fearnelinen · 08/05/2011 09:54

If you are questioned over grape theft in store, my advice is to say "I'm terribly sorry, here, would you mind putting my trolley back, I'm off to 'insert a.n.other shop name' here, have 20p for the grapes.

Average family spend is now over £90 - are we getting it yet people?

fearnelinen · 08/05/2011 09:56

And another thing... Wink she bought nice ham!

That totally negates 15 grapes in the profit stakes!

mankymummymoo · 08/05/2011 10:02

You should have bought nasty ham, it has fewer calories.

Based on the cost of the stalk I think im going to de-stalk the grapes and leave the stalk on the shelf next time I go to the supermarket. those 6p's will add up you know! Wink

wotnochocs · 08/05/2011 10:23

It's theft and it's wrong. You knew full well the cashier couldn't charge for it because you pay by weight and the weight was inside your spoiled brat.If it was a full bag of grapes and only a few left, then they must have eaten loads.
If your precious ikkle bunny really couldn't manage without eating grapes, then why didn't you buy a pre-weighed pack?

shinyshoes · 08/05/2011 10:27

How on earth did your child manage to eat a whole bag of grapes without you noticing

Not a criticism, just wondering
