To be shocked at how many mners seem to condone smacking

I am not talking about people who have smacked in anger and post saying "oh no, I lost it and smacked my DC" - everyone makes mistakes and no-one is perfect! I am talking about those who use smacking as a considered, pre meditated form of punishment/discipline. I know this was discussed a lot on another thread a few days ago, and I was pretty much told "each to their own" - but I am genuinely surprised that it seems to be a popular method here?

if the words violence and assault offend you, it seems odd that you would violently assault your child.

I currently work as a family outreach worker. If a family i am supporting uses smacking in front of me it is our policy to advise that such practises are assault and that i am to refer to my superiors. I will obviously advise on alternatives.

NO professional that works with children should stand by and watch whilst you hit a child. whether you believe it is a calm and reasonable act or not.

osama if i walked up to you in a pub and slapped you on the hand and you started raving about assault you would get laughed out of the pub. if i walked in and slapped you across the face and you started talking about assault you would have a valid case. its mostly about intent with assault. tell you what i will come and slap you on the hand and you can call the police and lets see if they will press charges shall we.

Really? So if I walk upto an elderly person and hit them with all my strength across tgheir hand, then that wouldn't be assault. What if I don't hit them but spit at then in the face, would that be assault?

sickoftheholidays, you are laughable. Those of use who don't think it's ok to assualt our offspring are not extremists, just good parents, unlike you! And I would have reported you if I had seen you unnecessarily assaulting your poor child in the supermarket.

Actually you can be charged and convicted of assault even if the person being assaulted consents to it.....

sick, people who talk about a 'controlled' smack actually turn my stomach, it is disgusting. Almost as bad as the term 'loving smack'. Shame on you for hitting your kids, just because you can.

Indeed cannydoit . Mamazon I know plenty of professionals who can use their brain and can recognise he difference between assault and a parenting technique. As stated earlier by mumofaflump, there seems to be a chasm between what people anti-smacking are porpurting to be the norm and what most people who don't mind smacking view as reasonable.
