To think that this large supermarket chain should have refunded my money!!!

Was in a large supermarket that shall remain unnnamed with my 3 year old DS.

He has fed up about being dragged around the shops and I had bribed promised him a can of coke which he was stood in the queue holding.

Unbeknownst to me he had been shaking the can while we were paying. Just before I left the checkout I opened it for him and lo and behold it went everywhere!! All over the floor and DS and on me too. Checkout lady just buzzed someone to clean the floor even though DS was in tears as he could no longer drink his drink. I didn't have time to go and get a replacement but AIBU to think the shop should have gone and brought him a replacement instead of basically putting us into a situation where he had to go and get another one and then pay for it?!

One can of coke is nothing to them, am tempted to write to head office explaining how treating customers in this shoddy way will lose them business.

Cheers!

Well, we do go to McDondalds - I like the coffe and the kids have a juice.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 01/05/2011 16:48

Would have never have happened at Waitrose Wink

Was shopping with DS (3) at Waitrose, and gave him an orange juice I brought with me. He spilled it. They immediately cleaned it up even though I offered to do it. They insisted on replacing it despite telling them I brought it in with me. Smile

icooksocks · 01/05/2011 16:48

Kids have juice if we go, they aren't allowed fizzy. But the do get fishfinger happy meals, but meh, they like them.

vintageteacups · 01/05/2011 16:50

They are insured for brekages and spills whilst you on their premises but YABU to expect them to have offered to go and get you one. I guess you could have asked but it's a can of coke and your DS shook it. If I knew that my child had shaken it, I wouldn't expect to receive another one.

Although, saying that, as I placed a bottle of brandy (with a long thin necked bottle) into my trolley once. the bottle neck just broke off. I felt really bad but they said it was fine as it was done in the shop and even though it was really my fault, they said they're insured for accidental damage.

I would have thought a toddler shaking a can would be seen as accidental damage but over a can of coke, chill Grin

vintageteacups · 01/05/2011 16:51

Oh and a bit Hmm at giving a 3 yr old a can of coke but being mrsjudgy so whatever Wink.

mx5hairdresser · 01/05/2011 17:02

the op is either a troll, or very very backward.

Oakmaiden · 01/05/2011 17:02

I love coke. Drink FAR too much of it.

My 13 year old son occasionally has Coke, but only on special occasions.

My 6 and 7 years olds are not allowed Coke, although I do let them have lemonade on occasions when the eldest has Coke. Although the 7 year old doesn't like fizzy drinks anyway.

Anyway- - back to the OP - many supermarkets will replace something you drop at the checkout, but I think it is a bit unreasonable to EXPECT them too.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 01/05/2011 17:06

True that it wouldn't happen in Waitrose (Waits for OP to proclaim "oh well it WAS W/rose!)

meliesmummy · 01/05/2011 17:07

Are petits filous banned too now then? Dd loves those...

giraffesCantDanceAtWeddings · 01/05/2011 17:13

You sound like the type of person who would undercook a chicken then complain when you got food poisining.

frazzle26 · 01/05/2011 17:15

Some of you are getting far too focused on the fact she gave her child coke. So what?? Surely that's her decision so let her get on with it and don't give her a hard time.

Anyway I'm on the fence as to whether you should have been given a refund/replacement OP. It would have been good customer service but to be fair they weren't obliged. However, when I dropped my tray in Costa Coffee they replaced my drink and muffin and I was really pleased as it had cost me the best part of £5 and I thought that was really good customer service.

It seems it's just luck on the day who is in the shop as to whether you get a refund/replacement IME.

ilovesprouts · 01/05/2011 17:19

was it pepsi coke or coca cola Grin

icooksocks · 01/05/2011 17:22

melliesmummy-nobody said coke was banned. My kids love petit filous too-doesn't stop them being full of sugar though, so I limit them to the odd treat.

gillybean2 · 01/05/2011 17:24

meliesmummy I haven't given ds petot filous in years. They used to have very few ingredients in them, and fruit puree. Now they have dubuious imo ingredients. People just don't read the label though!

When I tried to email them to complain I couldn't even track down an adress. The email adress I did finally find was for the US branch of the company who said they weren't the same.

MollieO · 01/05/2011 17:31

OP may I be the first to welcome you to MN. Hope you are enjoying the long weekend but please make sure you've completed your homework before Tuesday. You wouldn't want to get into trouble at school now would you?

Gemsy83 · 01/05/2011 17:46

OMG not just at the twatishness of the OP but the total overeaction regarding kids drinking coke/fizzy drinks. Call the cops its carbonated drink Hmm

pinkmagic1 · 01/05/2011 18:19

I also can't understand the food police on here. My 2 who are 6 and 4 eat good, nourishing home cooked meals every day and drink water as a general rule but occasionally they will have coke, sweets and mcDonalds etc. Everything in moderation is fine and I can't see the issue if it is given as a treat so long as they are not guzzling it back in replacement for water. If you deny your children the odd naughty treat I truly believe it can cause them to have serious food issues later in life.
I do believe the OP was unreasonable to expect the supermarket to replace the can though!

BeakerTheMuppetMuppet · 01/05/2011 18:29

YANBU

i always give DD grapes out of the box and point out to the checkout operator that the pack has been opened, always get a new box, and the rest of the queue have to wait whilst a runner goes to get it for me.

not really, but i thought i'd fit in here Grin

and a bit bored

Wink
Mare11bp · 01/05/2011 18:38

I have never given my son coke, is that so harts to believe?

And I am not one of these parents who bans sweets crisps etc either!

WereOffToSeeTheWizard · 01/05/2011 18:40

What's the best yoghurt to give then? Save me searching all the labels.
Op if you are for real then no I have never given my nearly 3 year old coke.

Your fault (you gave your DS a can of coke aged 3 - what do expect him to do? Hold it politely?), not theirs.

Why the bloody hell should they have go and get you another one, never mind pay for it?

YABVU

gillybean2 · 01/05/2011 19:52

WereOffToSeeTheWizard - I would suggest muller little stars or yeo valley organic. Both come in smaller sized pots for dc (though the yeo valley one is bigger)

PossetFeatures · 01/05/2011 19:56

YABVU- and i'll put my judgey pants on here and also jump on the 'why the feck are you giving your 3 year old coke' bandwagon!

Mamaz0n · 01/05/2011 19:58

you didn't supervise a 3 year old with a can of coke (wtf are you giving a 3 yo a coke for?) and when as wuold be expected he shook it you expect the supermarket to make amends for your inability to do your job as a parent?

so the supermarket should make a loss because you can't watch your child?

err no i dont think they should have replaced it.
