To think that this large supermarket chain should have refunded my money!!!

Was in a large supermarket that shall remain unnnamed with my 3 year old DS.

He has fed up about being dragged around the shops and I had bribed promised him a can of coke which he was stood in the queue holding.

Unbeknownst to me he had been shaking the can while we were paying. Just before I left the checkout I opened it for him and lo and behold it went everywhere!! All over the floor and DS and on me too. Checkout lady just buzzed someone to clean the floor even though DS was in tears as he could no longer drink his drink. I didn't have time to go and get a replacement but AIBU to think the shop should have gone and brought him a replacement instead of basically putting us into a situation where he had to go and get another one and then pay for it?!

One can of coke is nothing to them, am tempted to write to head office explaining how treating customers in this shoddy way will lose them business.

You realise that they don't actually need you as a customer, right?

I expect they prefer customers who don't allow their 3 yo's to shake up cans of coke and make a mess everywhere and buy drinks that are more expensive actually suitable for small children.

FabbyChic · 01/05/2011 15:25

You fed your child coke and he is three? YABU.

You allowed him to shake it and waste it yet wanted the supermarket to replace it? YABU

rainbowinthesky · 01/05/2011 15:26

This is an amazing thread. Cannot believe the cheek of the op.

BerryLellow · 01/05/2011 15:26

No, I've never given a three year old coke.

HTH

HerHissyness · 01/05/2011 15:27

How strange [chmm]

Supposedly 'intelligent' enough to use a computer...

Clearly stupid enough to give a 3 year old a Can of Coke. [cshock]

Neverthetwain is a good nickname, but ArsefromElbow might be even more apt.

Better try next time 4/10

ilovesprouts · 01/05/2011 15:27

jog on .com

doley · 01/05/2011 15:28

It would have been a nice gesture I guess ?

I doubt they would have even thought of it though ,as it was your fault .

I think coke is unsuitable , however I do think you should have found a way to get him a new one... just this once Wink

ilovesprouts · 01/05/2011 15:28

my ds2 never has coke too ,its water /juce or nothing

neverthetwain · 01/05/2011 15:28

No, supervise your child

and don't give them carbonated drinks to hold

Dogs don't guard food either

Congratulations.
You get my first ever [cbiscuit].

meliesmummy · 01/05/2011 15:30

Is this real? Coke? 3 yo?

If it is then I can put my hand on my heart and say that I have never given my 3 yo coke. And I have no intention of doing so either at any time in the near future!

boosmummie · 01/05/2011 15:31

YABU. And I can honestly say that I don't know anyone who would give their 3yo Coke - after watching my grandfather use coke for one thing and one thing only (cleaning the oil stained drive) I'm not entirely sure I'd be happy with my 17yo drinking it either Grin

worldgonemad72 · 01/05/2011 15:32

yabu, its your fault it was left undrinkable, maybe they should of charged you for cleaning it up then given you a can of coke? which would you prefer?

AimingForSerenity · 01/05/2011 15:32

When my children were little my theory was if they were old enough to do a particular task (in this case to carry the can of Coke) they should be capable of doing it in a sensible and responsible way. If they weren't capable of it, it was my job as their mother to find a way around it.

Your son is very young to be trusted with a can (as was proved by the explosion!) so you should have been more careful. Why you expect anyone else to compensate for your lack of forethought is beyond me. Whilst I am sorry for your little one, he will have learned not to shake cans and maybe it will make you more aware in future.

Why should you be compensated for stupidity? If anyone should cover the cost of another can it is you.

LadyKaraStarbuckofThrace · 01/05/2011 15:32

YABVU - coke is not a suitable drink for a 3yo. And you should have supervised him better, the supermarket didn't shake the can up, your ds did!

travellingwilbury · 01/05/2011 15:32

Am I correct in thinking you may have a sense of entitlement Grin

Laquitar · 01/05/2011 15:33

Yes her priority was to get the floor cleaned before someone slips on it. Are you really so stupid?

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 01/05/2011 15:33

In what way has the shop treated you in a shoddy way?

You have absolutely no cause for complaint - and I'd hold to that view even you'd been handed a mop & bucket and required to clean up the mess you'd made.

Consider yourself lucky the spillage didn't go over other customers otherwise you could be adding laundry/dry cleaning costs to your shopping bill.

thumbwitch · 01/05/2011 15:34

Oh DAMMIT - travellingwilbury got there before me!! [csad]

Bluebell123 · 01/05/2011 15:34

Dont think you can 'expect' them to have done, but I would have thought they would have done, just from the point of view of customer relations.

I dont normally have a good thing to say about huge supermarkets, but had a very good experience with Sain....urys customer service the other day. My 9 year old son had seen a 14.99 WWE themed complete waste of money plastic piece of rubbish toy last week and I had explained that it was probably worth about 50p in real times but he loves WWE so much and was so insistent this was what he really wanted to spend some birthday money he had received on. I gave in. He took it home, of course it was rubbish. So he said, mummy please can you take it back! I tried to explain that you cant do that unless its faulty. This wasnt faulty, just rubbish. Anyway, I felt so cross that this piece of plastic in its shiny box with exciting pictures had conned my little boy, that I did take it back. I was completely honest with the lady at Cust Services. She was obviously a mum too, she didnt bat an eyelid, just said "lets just write down that it was returned because of poor design". I was amazed but very grateful.
