to think it's highly unlikely that Jesus was dead when they put him into the tomb?

Crucified for 1 day with nails put in hands and feet and a spear wound on his side. I think he must have just been unconscious when put in the cave. Then 'came to' the day later and pushed the stone away with the sort of supehuman strength that, for example, women get whentheir babies are trapped under soemthing heavy. Guards outside tomb could have been sleeping or buggered off or something.

Yes, YABU IMHO.

It's all a fairy story IMHO.

All the rest is academic really. :)

noddyholder · 24/04/2011 12:00

Highly unlikely jesus was full stop

cunexttuesonline · 24/04/2011 12:01

So neither of you believe that jesus was real?

OP posts:
HerRoyalHighnessPrincessCervix · 24/04/2011 12:02

you are entitled to your opinion but you are wrong.

ihatecbeebies · 24/04/2011 12:03

Yanbu at all.

shushpenfold · 24/04/2011 12:04

Read 'Who moved the stone'....written by a man determined to disprove Jesus' death.

Clockface · 24/04/2011 12:04

If Jesus were killed on the Passover, it would have been a big, high-profile killing, done with maximum effect to warn would-be insurrectionists that you don't challenge the powers that be. Jesus would have been seen as a security risk to both the religious and political systems, at a time of real instability (which culminated in the Jewish War of 66-70 CE) and lots of economic difficulty that led many people to escape debt by joining cults and religious sects.

So on that basis, YABU!!! Grin If the above scenario is true (it's certainly historically plausible) they'd have very well made sure that Jesus was dead. And the guards would have had the least enviable job in Jerusalem - Jesus' dead body was still a political / religious tinderbox - no way could they have buggered off!

Happy Easter btw! Smile

PatientGriselda · 24/04/2011 12:05

You can think what you like, of course, but it's a bit mannerless to post, when it undermines the basis of faith for a lot of people, on the day that celebrates it.

GeneHuntsMistress · 24/04/2011 12:07

Please - if this OP was riding roughshod over Islamic beliefs it would not be tolerated. please - this is the holiest day of holy days for all Christians. please just respect that for one day and have your debates over this another day.

Happy Easter! [bugrin]

Yabu to write this post on Easter Sunday. Would you try to disprove another religion on their celebration day? In poor taste IMO.
Yanbu however to have your opinion.

GeneHuntsMistress · 24/04/2011 12:08

PatientGriselda - thank you I totally agree with you! Poor taste today.

FabbyChic · 24/04/2011 12:08

Don't believe any of it - sorry.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/04/2011 12:09

I suggest you watch the mel Gibson film "passion of the Christ". Frankly I'm surprised he managed to get up the hill with what they tortured him with. There is plenty of documentation that describes the tortures that the Romans carried out on miscreants and criminals.

The only part of the Jesus story you can take issue with as a non Christian is whether he was the son of god and indeed whether god is real.

The historical figure is in no doubt unless you doubt the existence of Henry 8th, there is masses of documentation (not the bible) that said he lived (and not just an amalgamation of preachers and holy men around at the time).

PatientGriselda · 24/04/2011 12:12

There are lots of things I don't believe in, lockets, but it's about appreciating time and place, that's all.

hairylights · 24/04/2011 12:12

Easter is actually symbolic only for Christians. It is in fact the pagan spring festival of fertility which predates the Christian celebration. So Jesus is actually pretty irrelevant today.

RufousBartleby · 24/04/2011 12:13

Noddyholder, whatever you believe it is highly likely that Jesus was - contemporary commentators such as Josephus mention him.

Crucifixion is a hideous way to die, but afaik there are two options for anyone who found themselves in the situation. You could prop yourself up (I think there was a small post beneath the feet or between the legs(?)) and die a long lingering death from dehydration/bleeding/people throwing stones at you etc., or you could let your body weight hang and expire much quicker from suffocation. I've read Jesus chose the latter, which is why he was up there for a shorter period.

Of course it all happened over 2000 years ago so nobody really knows the exact details.

What a nice cheery Easter thread!

PatientGriselda · 24/04/2011 12:18

There are many, many arguments to be had about the veracity or verifiability of the claimed details of the life and death of Jesus. And I don't think many Christians would object to the existence or expression or development of those arguments, when they were presented in a scholarly and thoughtful way, which respects the sensitivity of the subject and the place it holds in many people's lives. And on that note I genuinely don't think historical, biblical textual, archaeological or theological scholars would chose Easter day to publicise a challenge of the sort the OP has.

PatientGriselda · 24/04/2011 12:20

Choose, FFS.

Vallhala · 24/04/2011 12:22

I respect others' right to believe in something which I don't, be that Jesus or the tooth fairy.

I do not respect anyone's belief that they have a right to deter or discourage me from stating that on a public internet chat forum.

To some this might be a sacred day... to me it's a day like any other. And yes, I would say the same if you were Christian, Muslim, Jew or Jain.

I don't try to censor your beliefs. Please don't try to censor my opinions.

Clockface · 24/04/2011 12:28

I dunno - as a definite Christian, I don't mind people questioning my faith. I like it tbh! Smile I like to be kept on my toes!

(I could legitimise this by mentioning that Jesus didn't tell Thomas off for questioning, but let him feel the marks in his hands and feet...)

PatientGriselda · 24/04/2011 12:29

Sure, Valhalla. I think it's just a question of politeness, really. It's certainly an interesting question, but perhaps one that could be posed at another time, when it won't have quite the same offence-factor.

pink4ever · 24/04/2011 12:40

I am agnostic(currently favouring the belief that we all orignate from aliens-no offence intendedGrin. But yes I do believe their was a man called Jesus and that he had many many followers who belived he was the son of God. With regards to the crucifixtion-in all likelyhood he was probably very close to death by the time they did this(was tortured and also some texts suggest he was speared in the side). I think it probably was the Romans who removed the body as they didnt want him to become a martyr or give his followers a chance to steal it themselves.Perhaps he was resurrected?.....
