Don't think I can even go to airport. Three DC and DH will be devastated. I am so mad with myself. Have tried diazepam and sedatives, but not cutting it. Not sure about source of fear but I just can't face it- whole thing- check in, boarding, taking off, being up there and trapped in that little seat. Kids will take piss which makes me worse. Youngest will be saying 'what is keeping us up' as he has not flown recently. Just in turmoil. Going with friends too so making me even worse. Any PLEASE???

Hope Kangers did it and is now enjoying her holiday.

I think it helps to remember that the pilots have as much interest in self-preservation as everyone else. They like to have a safe flight and get home to see their families too.

A friend of mine who is an airline captain once told me that he feels much safer even as a passenger in an aircraft that he does on a rollercoster - aircraft have a better safety record, more rigorous safety checks and, if something does start to go wrong, there is lots of space to sort it out before they risk hitting something solid.

Also, on this thread there have been several mentions of travelling in a car being more dangerous. If you think about most car accidents, they usually involve another vehicle. A plane in the sky has lots of space around it. The rules on distance between aircraft are very strict. So a plane is much less likely to hit something, compared to a car.

Hope you all have lovely flights and great holidays.

kangers - I successfully treated someone for fear of flying recently (just qualified as a hypnotherapist).

It is very treatable by hypnosis and actually it's best if you have the session just before you fly - say a couple of days.
If interested, look at the General Hypnotherapy Register to find a hypnotist near you who should be able to help.
Good luck

olderandwider · 20/04/2011 17:04

ooops just read the dates, durrr!

I do indeed hope Kangers had a good holiday.

CURLYMAMMA · 20/04/2011 21:19

Olderandwider - any thoughts on the paul mckenna downloadable fear of flying session. He recommends you play it daily for a few weeks?

sailorsgal · 07/05/2011 14:40

Hope you had a fab holiday.

I know this post was years ago but I would really like to know if u made it to Spain? I suffer with panic attacks and anxiety and haven't flown for 17years now through fear that I will just throw up and not be able to breathe on the plane x

oldishladyinashoebox · 12/05/2019 09:07

What happened op?? Did you make it or did you have a panic attack and pass out?

TheSultanofPingu · 12/05/2019 09:27

This thread is right years old!

There are some films about combating your fear of flying on YouTube. Get watching and remember to remind yourself that the car journey to the airport is the truly dangerous part of your holiday, if you survive that you’ll do fine in the plane.
I do understand that you feel a real fear, but it would be cruel to deny your family this holiday just because you didn’t bother to try, so watch the YouTube film, have a glass of wine before you board and a diazepam.

NannyRed · 12/05/2019 09:59

Ugh! Zombie thread.

Sunshineandeggshells · 12/05/2019 10:03

Read Allen Cards "no more fear of flying". My DH was terrified of flying and it really worked. He took two flight yesterday and actually enjoyed flying. the difference was amazing!

OP we are going to Rome in the summer school holiday's somewhere i have always wanted to go and i won't lie i don't like flying .Not flown since eldest DC was small so prob 17yrs .I used to be petrified but then coming back from Greece we flew through a thunderstorm and it sort of in a bizarre way took the a absolute terror because i realised actually planes are pretty sturdy things we just have this how the hell they stay up there. But they do because from start to finish there a people taking safety very seriously. My youngest DC is slightly nervous because they have never flown before so i have shown them take off and landing videos on Youtube so they know how it works.Flowers you will have a fab holiday and make loads of wonderful memories .When i was really nervous i always found the cabin crew were always brilliant and fellow passengers .On more than one occasion when i was driving my DH mad with my fretting as soon we got on some lovely passengers would talk to me and i would relax Smile.
