Daughter is 5 next month. The wife(who doesn't work but think's that money is something that the cash point fairy just conjours up) has booked the local church hall.

4 hours at £15 per hour. OK. Sorted with that.

And hired a bouncy castle. £60. Fine with that

And booked a children entertainer and magician. £200 for two hours. WTF! £100 PER HOUR!!

And paid caterers to do the food £120!!!! WTF £120 for the a childrens * party!

£440 for a four hour childrens party!!! WTF!!!!

Is this excessive? She thinks that's what it should cost!

I don't understand why people do these overblown parties for their dcs. It just isn't good for children to receive those huge piles of presents, for starters. And I am not convinced that any 5 year olds really enjoy the huge parties - on the contrary, they often find them overwhelming. Sure, my offspring have asked for big parties, but I just don't do them. They have very small parties at home in our small semi with trad games and trad party food etc.

I actually think it's fine for a kids party f you can afford it. In the region of what parties seem to cost ime.

Well mine have all class parties because I never want to leave anyone out and the class isn't that big, this year the whole year was invited but due to Easter only 25 can make it which suits me and allows me to spend more on those that can make it.
Equally I do not buy the DC's Birthday presents, the other parents spend £15-20 so 25 of those is plenty for anyone. If they didn't have a party they might have a DS lite or a TV for their rooms but I prefer them to be sociable.
