I prefer Tesco.

Well Mumsnet seems to like their nappies, though I'm not sure why exactly.

As for Lidl, when I was younger our family used to shop there often. Yes, the majority of the food is foul to be honest.

shirleyshortcut · 03/06/2011 10:30

never been in either, they arent convenient for me

GandTiceandaslice · 03/06/2011 10:33

Tesco. I'd rather eat my own head than shop in Tesco.

poopnscoop · 03/06/2011 10:34

Never been in a Lidl or Aldi.. there are none close by. I use Ocado... which reminds me... I need to unpack my groceries that the strawberry van brought me Grin

sue52 · 03/06/2011 11:11

I stick to the Co op as I like it's support for local farmers. Tesco treat farmers like dirt.

thegruffalosma · 03/06/2011 11:32

I don't shop at either of them but noticed in the Lidl by my mums that they have the best range of fresh fruit and veg of any supermarket I've ever seen.

annoyingdevil · 03/06/2011 11:35

I love Aldi. Free range chickens for a fiver. Nice smoked salmon (unlike the chewy, brown tesco stuff). The Salmon Wellington is fab too. The only thing I avoid is the egg mayonnaise sandwich filling (yukky, cheap mayo)

cathers · 03/06/2011 11:46

Yabu Tesco sucks. I do 2 shops, one at aldi to get fruit, veg, oil, cheeses and cooked meats, and pasta/tinned toms and biscuit/ breads. Then nip down the road to waitrose for fresh fish/meat and household stuff.
Both shops come to same cost!

ohnoudidnt · 03/06/2011 13:07

Flowers and wine are fab from Aldi.

I usually shop at Waitrose with a smattering of Tescos, primarily due to location, but tried Lidl the other week and I was very impressed.

I found Lidls easier to get round as the aisles are wider, selection of fresh fruit and veg is generally very good as is their household basics, but I did find that the fruit and veg went off quicker so had to be sure to use them up. However there are certain specific branded things that we like that they don't stock so if I do shop there, I need to go somewhere else the following week.

BornToFolk · 03/06/2011 13:12

I find Lidl fruit and veg to be a bit hit and miss. Their avocados are always minging, for some reason. However, I bought a "Living Salad" (little lettuces in a planter) two weeks ago and it's still going strong. It was only £1.99.

The bread flour and mixes are excellent and much cheaper than Tesco.

The rye bread is lovely, filling and cheap.

Oh and I bought DS some winter trousers from there for a fiver last year. Good quality and so cheap.

AuntieMaggie · 03/06/2011 13:12

I love Aldi for most things though it hasn't always got the range of stuff as in ASDA. Don't tend to go in Lidl much as its further away but no complaints there either.

In fact all my food today has come from Aldi - porridge with honey and frozen berries, necterine, pear, tomato basil and creme fraiche soup and bread.

I've also just started using one of their 1.99 moisturisers a water based one and my normally oily skin is fab even in this heat and make up still in place!

AuntieMaggie · 03/06/2011 13:12

Oh and I prefer their mayo to helmans

piratecat · 03/06/2011 18:37

Hellmans mayo is gross, i much prefer Heinz

BatFlattery · 03/06/2011 18:50

YABU. We shop at Lidl and save ourselves at least £20 per week compared to Sainsburys and so far we have not found one thing which is disgusting. Most of it is pretty much the same only in different packaging.

And anyway, why does it matter to you where other people shop Confused?

revolutionscoop · 03/06/2011 19:00

The flowers, chocolates and crisps are good. Ditto fruit juices. It's just such a depressing shopping experience though, reminiscent of East-Berlin circa 1981. Also I know the checkout assistants are forced by the powers that be to scan items through at breakneck speed, but honestly, a little common sense wouldn't go astray. I was in a Lidl a few weeks ago & witnessed an elderly man frantically attempt to sort his few items into a bag whilst the checkout assistant huffed, puffed & tapped his fingers impatiently. Poor old man was so flustered he almost left his walking stick behind when he went to leave. Really unpleasant.

ThisisaSignofthetimes · 03/06/2011 19:46

Lidl for chocolate, olives, tinned toms, veg (although it's a bit hit and miss and doesn't keep for long), olive oil, peanut butter, rice, pasta, beer (some good ones always seem to be on special offer), milk. Waitrose for the rest.

I think the quality of Lidl is fine from what I have bought, ours isn't that big so doesn't offer all the ranges, it is a bit like East Germany before the wall came down though!

EricNorthmansMistress · 03/06/2011 21:06

Fucking hell I thought OP was back! Phew...

DonWimble · 29/06/2011 14:00

we have started shopping at Aldi and it is not that bad. The crumpets are very nice as are the cherry toms, baked beans, dried pasta. The veg is nice apart from onions and potatos and we save about £40 per week compaired to Sainsburys
The think that I dont like and makes me feel gruby is the other shoppers. I dont usually mix with the typical Aldi shopper, not that I am a snob

WhipMeIndiana · 29/06/2011 14:01

just stay at tesco then? leave the lidl stuff for me.

briefcasewanker · 29/06/2011 14:24

Has anyone tried Aldi's version of Ben and Jerry's ice-cream? Shock
I tried the cookie dough one last week

LittleMissFlustered · 29/06/2011 14:32

I like Aldi and Lidl. Use tesco too. Spend much less in the former, get much the same stuff.

However, I'm not a label junkie so my thoughts are probably unsound to someWink

CroissantNeuf · 29/06/2011 14:36

I'm sure its been said before on this thread but....OK you might not want to do an entire weekly shop at Lidl/Aldi but there are a lot of things there that are a damn sight better and cheaper than the Tesco/Sainsburys/whatever equivalent.
