I prefer Tesco.

Extinguisher at hand. LOL! Good.

In Asda brands are much cheaper than most supermarkets.

Seems to me that all the supermarkets are similar in terms of prices overall. The 'cheap' ones like Lidl and Aldi can offer good quality at a good price but that is acheived by not providing 'choice'. There is only one choice of pineapple juice at my local Lidl but I prefer it to any of the brands on offer at any of the other supermarkets I can use. The nuts selection is fab at my local Lidl, as are their veg sometimes. Other times I can get a better deal at my nearest farm shop, Lidl have just started Free Range Chicken where we are and it is much the same as the Farm Shop, ie cheaper than Morrisons.

I mix my shopping, sometimes I want convenient, sometimes I want bargains, sometimes I want ethical Quite a lot of times I want DP to waste his Saturday taking me everywhere!

YouaretooniceNOT · 14/04/2011 01:12

The co-op near me is a mahoosive superstore. No bakery!! Pees me off.

I think Tesco is terrible quality and really awful generally. Usually shop at Sainsbury's but would shop more at Aldi if there was one nearby. I wouldn't buy milk or meat there but their other foods are very good quality. Lidl I think is a bit pants but is generally recognised as one of the lesser quality places to shop.

But Tesco really is terrible, especially for the quality of their own brand produce, even their Finest range.

NestaFiesta · 14/04/2011 08:19

Lidl does really nice hand soap and a great orange scented anti bac washing up liquid. We also go there for packs of 12 pain au chocolat to warm through in the oven, great ice cream, delicious frozen Indian snacks and chicken teriyaki.

Not all the brands are furrin- you can get fruit corner, Muller rice, Walkers crisps etc.

Overall what I love best about Lidl is the fabulous chocolate gingerbread and Lebkuchen at Christmas. I get very excited when it shows up in October.

Wormshuffler · 14/04/2011 08:27

The way Tesco bully the farmers would make all their stuff leave a bad taste in my mouth if I shopped there, and there are big rumblings about their tax avoidance. Aldi and Lidl are ace, I use Morrisons for the things i can't get here, gravy, babybells etc.

sofaqueenie · 14/04/2011 08:37

Totally agree with Wednesday.

The amount of money I've saved since changing from Tesco to Aldi is unreal. The meat is just as good, there's less choice so I don't spend time deciding between 50 different types of cheese, plus I'm in and out in 25 minutes.

I'd rather cut off my arms than have to shop in Tescos tbh.

SpiderObsession · 14/04/2011 08:44

Nah I didn't think anyone could get me to move away from the Heinz beans until I tried the ones in Aldi (shock). Also the deli meat, the fruit/veg and the biscuits/ cakes are nicer.

But wait, if everyone goes to Aldi the prices will go up...

YANBU. Stick with Tesco. Wink

bruffin · 14/04/2011 08:45

Agree with OP Lidl vegetables are not very fresh and go off very quickly (Have used 4 lidls all quite a distance a part so not just my local one)
Somethings are okay but I find it very difficult to do a weekly shop in there. Quite good for stocking up some drinks and tins of tomatoes but that's it.

Every time I go into Morrisons there is a fightsConfused and their own brands are loaded with salt

teenyweenytadpole · 14/04/2011 08:48

Since we really started to try and save money we do almost all our shopping at the local co-op with only occasional forays to Sainsburys or Lidl if we happen to be in the area. We save loads, the food is excellent and you can get almost anything you could get in Tescos, and it's mostly fair trade. Loads of organic and gluten free stuff as well if you need it. Co-op rocks. I do love a good rummage round Lidl though, they have some great things if you are selective.

Whatevs · 14/04/2011 08:48

I switched from Tesco to Asda recently and am saving myself about £20 a week. I can see no discernible difference in the quality of their products and the clientele is no different (not that I give a jot about that).

The fact that so many people buy into image, packaging and all that smoke and mirrors stuff says a lot about how powerful these supermarket chains are.

gorionine · 14/04/2011 08:57

YAbU, I can buy frut and veg at Aldi/Lidl and be able to wait a couple of days before eating them, Teso ones seen to rot the very second they enter my home. I have actually just had to throw away 2 punnets of nectarines from Teso that looked fine on the outside but were so rotten inside I could not even use them to make jam. Do not let me start on their carrots either.

I buy from Aldi/Lidl :fruit and veg, chocolate and biscuits, cooking herbs, juices, pots and pans, toilet paper/tissues, outdoor cloth for dcs, kitchen utensils... never been desapointed do far.

princessparty · 14/04/2011 09:00

I think LIdl food is of amuch higher quality , but being a continental company that doesn't surprise me as they are much more particular about the quality of their food.

littleducks · 14/04/2011 09:00

I like the Wembley/Brent Park branch of Tesco opposite Ikea. It is like no other Tesco I have been to, instead of an 'ethnic food' aisle there is a whole section with huge bags of rice etc. stacked up like a cash and carry and has asian/carribean/oriental aisles and you can pick up really interesting new things to try.

Otherwise I tend to go to ASDA which may be chavvy but their fruit is cheap and lasts, I always end up with mouldy/stale food from tesco.

I like some LIDL products but not enough to actually do a whole shop there, but have got stuff like waterproof for the kids at a good price so am glad we have one close

ivykaty44 · 14/04/2011 09:04

I like some of lidl products, there salad and vegtables are a good price and of decent quality. I like there tinned fish and frozen fish.

I don't like there butter or oranges

there 70% chocolate styled like lindt - is really very good and far better than branded makes imo and at 80p a bar a bargin as well.

snoozin · 14/04/2011 10:14

I can't tell you how many times we've given people lunch/dinner or snacks. They say, 'oh that's lovely. where did you get that?' Answer: Lidl

I find Tesco soul destroying, especially the superstores. Plus a lot of the time they are far more pricy than other stores.

YouaretooniceNOT · 14/04/2011 11:01

I did shop at Asad but found that i was paying more or less the same as i did at Tesco.

Co-op is about a 2 minute walk from my house. I went there rarely as i found it soo expensive but ever since they have merged/taken over Somerfield, the bargains are fab!

49p for teabags and the tea they make is really strong..

Somerfield own brands - some of them are yummy!

Asda - typing in rubber gloves.

OP posts:
VinegarTits · 14/04/2011 11:04

there was an article not so long again where they scientifically compare Aldi food to branded food and it came out that Aldi products were actually better quality (i.e more meat in them) and less salt

So YABU and a dick

YouaretooniceNOT · 14/04/2011 11:07

Biscuit - from Asda for you VT
