I prefer Tesco.

We buy loads from Lidl and it's as good if not better than other supermarkets. The fruit and veg is very fresh and much cheaper. I don't buy meat/eggs there, but that's only because we buy that at the butcher.

usualsuspect · 13/04/2011 22:42

I like there fake jaffa cakes ....but tbh I prefer Asda [ stinking great chav]

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 22:43

I love Marks and Spencers and waitrose but cannot afford it..

Wil go back to buying fruit and veg at Aldi.

Yeah - Aldi's pink lady apples, clementines and maris piper potatoes are disgusting compared the exact same ones at Tesco Hmm

God knows what they do to their chickens, steak and pork chops because they also taste exactly the same as Tescos - weird!!

Their frozen veg - oh my God.

Seriously - they do really nice frozen burgers with stilton, some very nice wines and a good Irish Whiskey too. There is plenty of tesco own brand stuff that I think is sucky and every week I am tempted to complain about how quickly Tescos produce/milk goes off or the bread gets mouldy but am too lazy never get around to it

flippintired · 13/04/2011 22:44

HOw I wish there was a lidl as my local SM. The closest to us is about 20 drive away on the way to the hospital. I actually look forward to hospital visits as it's the only chance I can justify to shop in LIdl. Had a really crap chat with a consultant on Monday, Christ knows what he's paid for, useless, BUT it was more than compensated for by my trip to Lidl on the way back. The kids are always really excited when i've been to lidl, especially with the non food goods. We are sad I know.

YABU. No supermarket sells food that is "mainly disgusting". It may not be to your taste, but that does not make it disgusting.
I shop all over, from waitrose to Aldi, to Lidl, to tesco.com, to co-op and I find mainly delicious food in all the shops.
You just have to try some and find your taste, and then buy what suits your palate from each shop.

perfumedlife · 13/04/2011 22:46

I was thinking the same zukiecat. I came home from Asda to my old house (poshville, hated it ) and the neighbour sneered ' Oh, I see you've been trailing round SPASDA Shock Ocado do deliver here you know'

God I hate snobs. Food snobs are the worst.

charlieandlola · 13/04/2011 22:47

oh, and your budget!
I would love to spend £13 on a free range chicken that feeds 4 from Waitrose, but the £4.99 free range chicken that feeds 4 from Aldi will do me fine. Just as tasty, imho.

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 22:47

zukiecat i think Asda is a good supermarket too, the offers are a plenty - the really huge store i use soemtimes is about 12 miles from my house - but i go there. Asda's own products mostly suck IMO. Cottage cheese is nice though.

Don't rate Lidl's veg tbh, I find it doesn't keep long but

dishwasher tabs
washing powder
kitchen roll
toilet roll
baby wipes
nappies
Chopped Tom's

are staples I buy every week from there (along with their carrot cake!)

Also have nice bits in ours for easter atm, chocolate rabbits, little eggs for easter egg hunts etc with no branding which I prefer.

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 22:49

perfumedlife - ' Oh, I see you've been trailing round SPASDA - wow - disgusting remark to make...

YAB absolutely U.

Lidl - Bottled fizzy water, tinned tomatoes, passata, pasta, parma ham, smoked ham, aubergines, peppers, biscuits, chocolate, & many more - much better quality and much cheaper than Tesco.

i was always a little snobby about lidl till we moved to a town with a choice of lidl or the coop (i may have just outed myself!) as i hate internet food shopping we gave lidl a go and my attitude has changed, we wont be here for too much longer maybe another 18 months and when we move on, if we can find one close enough, we will carry on shopping there, not only that but friends and family visiting have started using them too. I agree with someone else who said the fruit and veg keeps better too.

lili2010 · 13/04/2011 23:14

YABU. Tesco stinks. Lidl have some good fresh produce including Italian rocket, yummy peaches last summer, their parma ham is fine, frozen lobster, nappies and wipes great too to mention a few examples. I flit between Waitrose, Lidl and Sainsburys but avoid Tesco unless for dire emergencies. It has the worst customer service of the lot, which considering how much money they are making is crap. Also hate the way Tesco smells. It has an artificial baked bread smell. Yuck. Their fresh produce is poor too. Tesco rant over.
