These potatoes would be golf ball size.

Golf ball size would be 3-4 per child, 5-6 for me, and 7-8 or more for dh.

Put it this way: when I make a roast dinner for the five of us, I use a whole 2.5kg bag of potatoes and there are rarely any leftovers. I also make a whole tray of other roast veg, as well as the meat.

God knows where they put it all! The dc never eat as much of anything else I make, and I'm the only fat one in the family.

SarahStrattonHasNiceBears · 14/04/2011 01:11

None. :(

cantspel · 14/04/2011 01:14

my husband doesn't eat veg so he would have at least 10 with about 5 yorshires and a big pile of meat.
I would have about 5 or 6 with a couple of yorkshires, veg and meat.
Both my sons dont eat potatoes so they would just have the meat, 5 or 6 yorkshires and the veg.
With a roast i usually do 3 veg of parsnips, peas, cabbage and either carrots or broccali.

CheerfulYank · 14/04/2011 01:21

Oooh, looks delicious. :)

cantspel · 14/04/2011 01:29

they are the food of the gods.

One of my favorite meals to use up left over meat is to make large yorkshire puddings in a cake tin and then put the left over meat in the yorkshire with some veg and fill with gravy. Tis yummy

CheerfulYank · 14/04/2011 01:32

Can you make them with gluten free flour? Wouldn't be the same of course. A friend of mine used to make me gluten free popovers, they seem sort of the same?

cantspel · 14/04/2011 01:42

yes glutten free self raising flour can be used and they dont taste too much different. There iare a few recipes on the web for gluten free yorkies. I haven't make them for years but i used to as my ex sil was on a gletten free diet.

missslc · 14/04/2011 02:24

My mum serves one and she really thinks 3 is excessive and says as much. My parents eat really small portions and i always feel like a greedy pig when I eat with them- they are so conscious of not over eating. My dad banned my mum eating potatoes at one point- my mum used to hide them and eat them when he was away...just because she had a stone to shed!

I can't believe people eat more than 3.feel less greedy after reading this....

TheSkiingGardener · 14/04/2011 02:36

One! Blimey!

3 to 4 reasonable size ones here each, and a big Yorkshire if we're having beef. Might do more this weekend......

missslc · 14/04/2011 02:43

A big one though gardner 1.5 golf balls- if they get too big they are cut in half though.

3 when i dine away from the parents.

cat64 Biscuit

Must be nice to be so intolerant and disgusted by fat. Hmm

To answer your question...yes...I eat fricking LOADS! And I'm not vaguely fat.

mitochondria · 14/04/2011 13:34

cat64 - yes. I really like roast potatoes. Once a week or so isn't going to kill me. I don't count calories or potatoes, and am the right weight for my height.

SecretNutellaFix · 14/04/2011 13:43

Cat- 6 ball sized roasties is maybe one large potato to one and a half. I allow 1 spud per person with one extra for every 2 people I'm cooking for. I also do this with mash as well. Works out well.

It depends. Are these actual roast potatoes, in which I am aware of the calories and fat and damage to my diet (in that case, 3)?

Or are these magic roast potatoes, known to have no calories and the vitamin profile of steamed broccoli (in which case, 10)

iskra · 14/04/2011 13:58

3 or 4 golf ball sized ones. Desperately want a roast potato now.

ruddynorah · 14/04/2011 13:59

3or 4. So probably equivalent to 1 jacket potato. And I don't eat meat.

InspirationalBreadbin · 14/04/2011 14:02

I like this thread. At my PILs house (not long after I had just met them) where there was 7 people at lunch, I was asked to start serving myself first. I picked 3 potatoes. Later, my FIL commented that my SIL had only 1 potato. she said 'Well SHE - (pointing at me) had too many'.
I apologised for taking too many and her response was that everybody knew you should only have 2 potatoes and when I said I didn't know that she said 'well you should've counted'.

EGGceptionalbeEGGleeyes · 14/04/2011 14:04

But if they didn't have all that fat on them they wouldn't be so delicious would they?
I only have roasts about once a fortnight though, and I'm skinny.

iskra · 14/04/2011 14:04

FHB (family hold back), InspirationalBreadbin?!

CatIsSleepy · 14/04/2011 14:06

loads, i love them and don't have them very often (in fact hardly ever!)
golf balls are pretty small, right?
i could easily eat 5 then scavenge a couple more for seconds

not sure why the shock horror from some at eating more than 2 or 3...it's not like it's every meal time is it?

Littlefish · 14/04/2011 14:07

Oooh, iskra - we say FHB in our family too! I didn't realise other people said it too, I thought it was just us. Smile

sassyTHEFIRST · 14/04/2011 14:08

Littlefish - and us!!!

Great to see you t'other day xx

FabbyChic · 14/04/2011 14:09

My son has six roast spuds, as do I.

Those who dish up just four are meanies! ;o)
