To wonder why Men aren't waxing their nether regions?

I read this article in the Guardian about the whole pornification pressure and the link to women getting rid of all their pubic hair.
As I don't watch porn, it was news to me that men in porn are often completely waxed down there Shock. The author makes a bloody good point. Why are women so influenced by the porn look but men - understandably -shy away from waxing their bits?

Why have we gone from the Joy of Sex 70s pubes on both genders to, by way of a quick trim then a landing strip, naked female bits but not male bits? Surely all the arguments that apply to removing female pubes apply to mens' pubes as well? So why aren't their magazines full of adds for hair removal creams and wax strips? Why aren't they convincing themselves that it's 'fresher' or more hygenic? How have we, in less than 40 years, convinced ourselves that it's good grooming when they have done bugger all. And yes, I know that there are back, sack and crack waxes for men, but they're still a long way from being considered the norm.

"I think, the difference between the man / woman doing it, is because very youthful women are seen as attractive, less hair is youthful."

Precisely my point about pedofilic tendencies. Only I would not use word "youthful" - "childlike" is much more appropriate.

TheAtomicBum · 12/04/2011 10:56

nulliusxinxverbax - I've wondered why the whole hairless thing came from. Porn seems to be the only explanation. Yes, the chasing youth thing is a bit disturbing to me - it reminds me of hearing someone of 30 odd say, "there's only a day between being a legend and a kiddy fiddler." The attitude just freaks me out. I've told people before now that they sound like dirty old men going on about a young girl.

But anyway - if the whole hairless thing was about pedohillia, would the men who prefer this prefer someone flat chested, also? Or pre-pubescent hips as well? I'm just wondering because very few men prefer that figure.

And I also remember growing up having to try to look older to please the girls who (it seemed) judged their level of womanleness on who had the oldest boyfriend. Which was again disturbing as sometimes this borders on pedophilia in my eyes. I mean, 25 & 15?

nulliusxinxverbax · 12/04/2011 11:29

Yes the 20 something guy with pre legal girls was common at my school too. Alot of girls saw it as a badge of honour, they were pretty and mature for doing this. Alot of them now look back and think it is wierd, especially when said 20 somethings are now 30 somethings and STILL dating teenagers.

That comment about a day between ledgend and kiddy fiddler made me shiver. Where on earth did you hear that, not nice.

It is a wierd sell off, very slim girls with no hair and young faces, with alien boobs. Take the boobs away and most of them look about 15. Its like the boobs are there to make it acceptable.

CurrySpice · 12/04/2011 11:33

"Normally, the bloke has to assist with holding skin taught, and they can't do it because they're in so much pain :)"

Is it wrong that that made me guffaw? :o It was the innocent little cheery smile at the end that did it!

DP shaves his balls and pretty drastically trims the rest. He thought everyone did and was shocked when he came to the UK andrealised most men don't

TheAtomicBum · 12/04/2011 11:41

That's what I thought when I heard it - it's crude all male office talk. Another that made me cringe was a 36 year old saying that the young woman nearby (20 I think. At most.) was going to sit on his lap and tell what she wanted for christmas, followed by a further crude comment about giving her said present. [if there was a cringe emoticon I'd use it here].

Not only does it gross me out but I don't get it. I'm 26, and a 16 year old (even an 18 year old, really) looks childlike to me. And personally, I'd rather go without.

It takes the girls a while to realise that it's not that they are "mature", it's that the guy's head is stuck in teenage years and is probably too much of an areshole for a woman his own age.

Another thing is, who is it who has made this stick insect look the "in thing?" Every bloke I know thinks that nicely curvy women are the most attractive Hmm.

nulliusxinxverbax · 12/04/2011 11:50

If you see something often enough, and are told you must fancy it, eventually it starts to happen. Monkey see Monkey do.....

I was shocked to see a poll not long agao where kiera knightly was voted one of the sexiest women by men. No boobs, no hips, very slim. 15 years ago that would never have happened.

Im 23 and I see those same guys, still chasing after young girls hoping they wont be smart enough to spot them for what they are, which is incapable of relationships with women who have opinions. They prefer to have someone doting on them. They also are usually unemployed or drug dealers.

What a catch :)

Crawling · 12/04/2011 11:56

'Another thing is, who is it who has made this stick insect look the "in thing?" Every bloke I know thinks that nicely curvy women are the most attractive'

Fashion decides as I said earlier my clothing sence had always been picked on by women but men have not been bothered by this, very few men IME actually have a preference regarding pubic hair yet women on this thread claim all men prefer it. I am very curvy (hourglass figure and size 8-10) I was picked on all through highschool by girls caling me fat but boys never thought I was fat and laughed if I said I was.

I think many of these things that are supposed to be more attractive are just fashion and most men I know have very little interest in fashion. Most men find their own type of looks they find attractive and are not influenced by fashion

TheAtomicBum · 12/04/2011 12:00

Good god, I just saw a picture of Kiera Knightley in a bakini. I had no idea she was that skinny. There were ribs and everything. Is anything more offputting than all the ribs? Someone get that woman a burger!

TheAtomicBum · 12/04/2011 12:34

Never been much of a follower of fashion. In fact I wouldn't have the first clue about what was in fashion.

I've often wondered how & why fashion can decide some things. Like how they decide what will be in fashion next season. Considering the definition of fashionable is what is currently popular. People are just being told what is to be popular next season Hmm?

So going back to the topic, I remember seeing porn from the 70's years ago, and everyone was full and bushy. 80's was trimmed/bushy. And the last time I saw porn almost everyone was smooth. So who decided that? If it came from porn, did a producer suddenly think, "I know, we'll all our actresses to shave." There must have been something that sparked it off.

nulliusxinxverbax · 12/04/2011 14:50

ha ha did you google her after my comment or something??

She is very boy-like, or child like depending on what your take on this issue is.

I personally cant understand it either as she doesnt have a feminine face either, IMO anyway.

The shocking thing to me was that she is now SO popular, of cours some men prefer slimmer women and that build, but to think she would be in the top 5 years ago? definatly not. something has changed.

TheAtomicBum · 12/04/2011 14:56

I googled her because I couldn't remember her being quite as skinny as you made out. Actually, she does have a pretty face IMO, I just think she'd be much more attractive if she'd put on a little weight.

Of course, in realirty, I've never been quite as concerned about body. I've dated fat, skinny (actually diagnosed anorexic once) and in between. It's more that I'll overlook what I don't find physically attractive if she has an attractive personality.

thaigreencurry · 12/04/2011 15:11

Thank fuck I am over 30. Bikini wax for my generation, I knew someone who had a brazilian but she was from Essex and owned a sunbed salon so it was to be expected.

Full waxing or Hollywood whatever it is called has definitely come out of the porn culture that we now have.

nulliusxinxverbax · 12/04/2011 15:13

AAAAHHHH top marks!

Mind you you would have to be quite brave to say otherwise on a forum like this.

IMO, Katy Perry is as near perfect as possible, without looking fake.
annoying voice though.

LaWeasel · 12/04/2011 15:27

I am 23, IME guys my age actually have zero preference re pubic hair (though tidy is good!) they just thank the moon and all it's stars if you'll let them anywhere near there!

So I think 'men love it bare' is all bullshit. I'm not suprised if you ask 14yos what they think that's what they say, but it's because they think that's what they're supposed to say. Same as have you had sex...

They'll grow up eventually.

TheAtomicBum · 12/04/2011 15:42

I agree with LaWeasel - when young, I really couldn't care less whether she shaved, waxed, trimmed, combed or whatever (don't you comb yours? I do, as it gets knotted sometimes)

However, when young I was also curious. I had seen smooth and didn't think much of it. But all the fuss did make me wonder whether it felt better or something.

I have to say, if I was to make a list of the things I look for in a potential partner, pubic hair isn't exactly the main concern. Whatever you women feel is most comfortable between your legs, you do that. I only came in here to point out that hair isn't actually unhygenic.

bothbaldies · 13/04/2011 10:57

Namechange here, too many of my clients on here, and I don't wnat them knowing my personal preferences!

DH has been having his waxed for the last year, and no, it doesn't hurt. He likes it, I love it as I hate stray hairs in my mouth!

I had mine done the first time I went for a wax i Paris, I wasn't given a choice, the lack of french vocabulary left me wondering what an "integrale" was, but I soon found out, and loved it, it feels so smooth, DH loves it too.

It really doesn't hurt, my lady does us both, Do doesn't have to go to London for it.

Malificence · 13/04/2011 11:03

Must be like two plucked chickens rubbing up against each other.
