To wonder why Men aren't waxing their nether regions?

I read this article in the Guardian about the whole pornification pressure and the link to women getting rid of all their pubic hair.
As I don't watch porn, it was news to me that men in porn are often completely waxed down there Shock. The author makes a bloody good point. Why are women so influenced by the porn look but men - understandably -shy away from waxing their bits?

Why have we gone from the Joy of Sex 70s pubes on both genders to, by way of a quick trim then a landing strip, naked female bits but not male bits? Surely all the arguments that apply to removing female pubes apply to mens' pubes as well? So why aren't their magazines full of adds for hair removal creams and wax strips? Why aren't they convincing themselves that it's 'fresher' or more hygenic? How have we, in less than 40 years, convinced ourselves that it's good grooming when they have done bugger all. And yes, I know that there are back, sack and crack waxes for men, but they're still a long way from being considered the norm.

Yes, I don't like it, personally. Just like you don't like hairless.

God, you're all so proud of your pubes! Does it really matter either way? There's more to being a woman than how much hair is down there. All about personal preference.

Most men I know do think no pubes is a strange look though so we all go off our own experiences. Each to their own but I am glad I dont have to put myself through any pain! I find it very strange you used to do it before you even had sex with a man though sequins. What made you want to do it?

I don't know noodle, I can't actually remember why I chose to do it. Guess that's just the way I wanted it to be. I knew I was about to do it for the 'first time' and that was just part of the preparation...done it that way ever since.

I wax my legs and I expect my dh to shave his face. We are happy with this compromise. Wink

Most of my mates prefer smooth with a little hair (Brazilian) at it looks cleaner and you assume that if a women takes pride there then she'll no doubt be hygeinic where as a full on 70's bush is very off putting, no pride and who knows what is lurking in there. Scarry. (Yes this may not be true but it is how us blokes think). I have never come across another male freind who prefers a fuller bush. My be its a regional / class thing, i dont know.

'I think that a lot of hair down there is a bit grim'

Fair enough Sequins. Fortunately for you (very fortunately, I'd imagine), you will never have to cast your eyes upon my ample pubage.

DH is a bit Victorian in that he has to have complete darkness (and me in a full nightdress!). He has never mentioned my nethers. Ever.

Mumsnet is very entertaining sometimes Grin

Can't speak for mankind in general, but a trim is nice if there is a lot of it and the weather is warm - makes things cooler and more comfy down there.

Can't imagine waxing though. It would look odd (well, more odd) if I did.

I always felt that the taste for Brazilian is bordering paedofilia.

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 17:26

MrSpoc yeah Brazillian's are fine I think!..but you are right about the full on 70s bush, it is not popular these days according to my research Grin I think it does come down to being 'well groomed'

noodle69 · 11/04/2011 17:26

Yeah I think trim is nice on either but the idea that someone has put themselves through a lot of pain (either man or woman) to do it just seems strange to me and a man would look like a plucked chicken (bleurgh)

I dont think its about pride though Mrspoc I am an ex webcam girl and I dont think that all men think like that at all, far from it. Also how are pubes unhygenic? I dont understand that tbh surely people wash lol?

bemybebe - come on, you cant be serious? You have probably just called half the adult population a pedaphile.

noodle69 - I cannot account for ever male, but my friends (alot are squaddies so may account for it) prefer trimmed, shaved with little hair.

The hygine side of it is how things can get trapped in the hair (this is the whole reason why we have pubes is to keep nasties out same as eye lashes and nose haires, ear hairs etc). I know I have had one or two off putting experiances but when it is shaved you can see the light.

I am ex forces myself and thats where a lot of men I know said it was paedo like to want no pubes. Again I suppose it is personal preference and the people you know but I have never seen waxing it all off as a thing that appealed to most men from what they have said.

Just urgh to last couple of lines is all I am saying!!

Pubic hair is far more hygenic than none actually. It's there for a reason, to protect a delicate mucous membrane. It's a daft as plucking out your eyelashes.
Don't hairless labia eventually go a bit leathery ?
Mrspoc, my DH has no problem getting stuck into my "70's bush", thank you.

I have no wish to look like either a pre pubescant child or a very old lady.

Perhaps if men realised that old ladies often have no pubic hair, it wouldn't be quite so appealing.

Do they find it 'cleaner' to remove their hair too?

Maybe it's an age thing. All of my girl friends wax and shave too. In fact, a couple of times I have gone with friends and we have had waxes after we've had our nails done. It's the norm amongst my friends.

I'm a 26 year old man. Whatever a woman wants to do with her private parts is her own business - but I would say that my DP doesn't wax/shave and seldom trims. But I have no problem as there's certainly no problem with hygene. In fact, I noticed hers was actually the cleanest I've had. Even the morning after a night out it was still perfectly clean and odorless.

Also, I'd just like to mention that I have had my pubes waxed for charity. Since then a waxed one makes me think, "owe!" And if I came home to see DP had waxed it I'd say, "Eek, why did you do that?"

I think you have a point Bemybabe. I'm inclined to agree with you. I think men who proclaim women's normal body hair to be unacceptable should examine what lies behind their attitudes. Maybe it's an inability to see a female partner as an adult and/or equal?

Mr Spoc - all the men you know wax of the majority of their pubes?

mathanxiety - i think you are reading a little too much into this. People just have different preferances.

So know your saying if a man likes a shaven haven then he is a pedo or likes to dominate his wife/ Girlfriend or that he does not see her as equal.

Where do some of you come up with these crazy ideas? Mental.

Just in case you missed the shaven haven i was taking the piss. Grin

For me, it's the old lady thing.... I think after you get over a certain age if you shave it all, it looks like it just fell out

But then I am 31 and really old and raddled Wink
