To wonder why Men aren't waxing their nether regions?

I read this article in the Guardian about the whole pornification pressure and the link to women getting rid of all their pubic hair.
As I don't watch porn, it was news to me that men in porn are often completely waxed down there Shock. The author makes a bloody good point. Why are women so influenced by the porn look but men - understandably -shy away from waxing their bits?

Why have we gone from the Joy of Sex 70s pubes on both genders to, by way of a quick trim then a landing strip, naked female bits but not male bits? Surely all the arguments that apply to removing female pubes apply to mens' pubes as well? So why aren't their magazines full of adds for hair removal creams and wax strips? Why aren't they convincing themselves that it's 'fresher' or more hygenic? How have we, in less than 40 years, convinced ourselves that it's good grooming when they have done bugger all. And yes, I know that there are back, sack and crack waxes for men, but they're still a long way from being considered the norm.

I tried hairless once years ago- the regrowth was so itchy! Argh. And DH was no more or less turned on by it.

Apart from trying a home waxing kit on my legs once - to disasterous effect, couldn't get the wax off and the hairs stayed on!- I have never waxed and don't see the need to inflict pain and embarrassment on myself.

I just shave down the sides of the pubic region so that the hairs don't poke out of knickers/swimwear, I shave my armpits and legs, all in the shower and it takes minutes. I don't find it a hassle or an issue at all.

This debate reminds me a bit of someone telling me when I was about 20 that men don't like women who drink pints. I told him I don't like men who don't like women to drink pints!

SequinsAndSparkles I have heard the opposite 'more cushion for the pushing' but it works out great anyway they dont want pubes I dont want a man who had no pubic hair as a desirable attribute I prefer them to have a good personality down as what to look for in a partner.

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 16:32

My husband trims his.. I have absolutely no idea why, as I cant say I ever notice until he tells me and tries to flaunt it... Grin..

He also said it is supposed to make it look bigger... again, I dont actually look at it with a mental ruler either.. Grin

But, if it makes him happy...

I quite happily shave all mine off, purely because I find it feels more hygienic. Absolutely nothing to do with porn at all.

bristolcities · 11/04/2011 16:35

It's funny that it is thought of as much more hygienic. There was a study done on women who had just given birth and the women with pubes had a much lower rate of infection than those who shaved.

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 16:39

If they didnt normally shave, then I imagine it could bring them up in a rash, especially if it was done quickly by the nurse/midwife. If it is not done regularly, ingrowing hairs and spots are quite common.

Apologies if a bit TMI, but personally, I get heavy periods, and that is one of the reasons I prefer not to have a lot of undergrowth...

MrBloomEatsVeggies · 11/04/2011 16:41

Hairless pubic regions are grim, childlike and plain weird. IMHO, obviously.

You could get lost for months in my pubes (maybe the only reason I have sex on birthdays/Xmas

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 16:51

It's not 'grim' Mr Bloom Hmm

But if we are going down that road, I think that a lot of hair down there is a bit grim.

Different strokes, eh?

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 16:52

It also narks me how people on this thread are suggesting links between men who like no hair to peadophilia. That is outrageous!

Crawling · 11/04/2011 16:59

you are upset at pubeless being called grim when you said pubic hair was repulsive, different strokes eh?

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 17:01

Erm, actually Crawling, I said:

'In fact, amongst a lot of the guys I've known, women with a lot of pubic hair have been described as repulsive. I'm not saying that is right, by the way, but that's what I've been told before'

They weren't my words, and I specifically said I'm not saying that is necessarily right. Women should be able to be however they like, but some women seem to take issue with the fact some like to shave or wax!

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 11/04/2011 17:04

'amongst a lot of the guys I've known, women with a lot of pubic hair have been described as repulsive'

Why is it not repulsive on men?

OP posts:
Crawling · 11/04/2011 17:05

I agree women should be free to shave, wax trim or do nothing personal choice.

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 17:06

No idea!

I personally wouldn't like a hairless man though, I like hair, it's manly!

noodle69 · 11/04/2011 17:06

Right so if a drop dead gorgeous women turned up and they got down to have sex and the man saw she had pubes he would say no sorry thats repulsive. Doubt it somehow!

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 17:07

I find men with hairy backs and excessive body hair on their arms and legs repulsive. I would never want to get closer than that to seeing what else was way too hairy as that would be enough to put me off them.

A bit of chest hair is acceptable... and a nice little line going down from the belly button is quite nice... and thats it.

Anything that looked like a werewolf would be a big no.

Malificence · 11/04/2011 17:08

I bet the blokes bemoaning pubes as repulsive are the fat sweaty--
ugly losers who are not getting laid.

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 17:09

Where did I say that noodle? In fact, I said:

'Well of course, a lot of men would do it anyway...but for most of my male friends, DH and past boyfriends..hairless is the preference.'

So much selective reading happens on these threads.

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 17:09

And I think men would probably find pubes that were like an out of control hedge quite off putting, whereas I cant imagine any bloke moaning about a neatly trimmed patch... its all about grooming. A neat hedge always looks better than a bramble!

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 17:09

No, actually, malifence, not at all.

noodle69 · 11/04/2011 17:10

Yeah I light trim is fine but why anyone would put themselves through painful waxing is beyond me, especially when I think most men do think it looks weird and underage to have no pubes at all.

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 17:10

More assumption there Malificence Grin

I wouldnt say so at all.

Malificence · 11/04/2011 17:11

We aren't talking excessively hirstute though Squeaky, we are talking normal women with normal pubic hair - I don't findbeards/ hairy chests/backs attractive either but plenty of women do, no woman is ever going to refuse to shag a man because he has pubes though, are they?

Crawling · 11/04/2011 17:12

Actually SequinsAndSparkles you said 'Well of course, a lot of men would do it anyway...but for most of my male friends, DH and past boyfriends..hairless is the preference. I don't think it's very nice either tbh.'

Showing your agreement and thinking pubes are not nice.

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 17:13

I doubt any man would refuse to shag a woman if she had neat and tidy pubic hair either though. It when it looks like Susan Boyles hair-do I can understand them being a bit reluctant!

SequinsAndSparkles · 11/04/2011 17:13

noodle but most men don't all neccesarily think that. Out of all the men I've come across, I've encountered hardly any who like it.

So many assumptions on this thread. I agree squeakytoy I'm sure a neatly trimmed patch would be fine with many, but like you say, it's about grooming.
