IABU to think I shouldn't be told off by the police by daring to be a woman out alone after dark?

I was walking through a deserted cut-through at around 11pm, on my way home. I'd been shopping and to the gym, as evidenced by the bags I carried.

I happened across a pair of policemen on bikes, who saw fit to brake and tell me I 'should be careful walking by myself at this time of night'.

IABU to feel angry and offended by this?

i was thinking 666 or something like that

GotArt · 11/04/2011 20:40

shakey LOTM is so out in left field with this, that it just ain't worth trying to decipher what the reasoning is behind the asinine statements mean. You'll just spurn on more incoherent comments that will make you go Hmm

TandB · 11/04/2011 20:40

That is for people who REALLY don't like the police. Satan turns up with blue flashing lights on and booms "Beeeee Caaareful" before dragging you off to hell....

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/04/2011 20:41

great minds think alike....was just gonna say 666

im still early in service so i suppose i still get quite defensive, it will wear off im sure along with the good natured friendly banter that seems to piss some women off! ha.

Goblinchild · 11/04/2011 20:43

Now you're just being silly, people.
Don't you realise that you are being....flippant?
Tut tut. Consider yourselves reprimanded for reprehensible ridiculosity.

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/04/2011 20:44

pmsl!

TandB · 11/04/2011 20:44

I can't even say that last sentence so on that basis YABU Goblinchild.

scottishmummy · 11/04/2011 20:44

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/04/2011 20:52

missed that one. smiley bastards are just everywhere. the bastards.

shakey1500 · 11/04/2011 20:55

GotArt- I'm just so puzzled as to where LOTM is coming from. Genuinely interested as I perceive it as..well..skewed perception I suppose but realise I may be missing something so thought I'd ask :)

SharonGless · 11/04/2011 20:57

Vicar - don't worry I still get defensive after 17 years! And when people meet you in your private life but find out your job and treat you completely differently.

Glad you are enjoying it though after waiting so long - you got in just at the right time. I

scottishmummy · 11/04/2011 20:59

thread was yonks ago.this thread is contrived and faux indignation.nutty.the daftest ive seen in a long time.total socialsciencetastic hegemony blah blah

SharonGless · 11/04/2011 20:59

And don't think you can just go around smiling at folk FFS - they might want to engage with you and talk back. Eek

hairfullofsnakes · 11/04/2011 21:00

Think yabvu - why on earth were you offended

Animation · 11/04/2011 21:05

Scottishmummy - what you're really saying is "be careful" - right!

scottishmummy · 11/04/2011 21:07

aye.naw.mebbe.depends whos asking.be careful now

Animation · 11/04/2011 21:08

Well what a fucking liberty I say - I am indignant!

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/04/2011 21:17

thanks sharongless i should really try not to bite. ( i am a cagney and lacey fan)

i need to perfect a menacing stare obviously - that should ensure no convivial conversation, best warn the men on shift - dont give any crime prevention advice to women in case its misconstrued.

as it happens, something happened during my last shift that sort of proves that to give this advice is the right thing to do - no matter how many feminists it offends.
this is MN at its daftest. people being positively determined to be offended.

HHLimbo · 11/04/2011 21:28

I might agree with them actually - you should carry a big stick, then they'd be sorry! hahahahaaa!

SharonGless · 11/04/2011 21:56

you just gotta rise above it - trouble is if you care then you will bite.

We are being told now we have got to police smarter - some of this is to ensure that criminals are given less opportunities to commit crime. It would be great to be able to leave our doors open, bikes out on the street while we nip in the shop and to walk home with no fear of being mugged. Unfortunately our society is not like that Sad

Where I work has a massive student population and every September we invest a lot of police resources into educating students to reduce the risk of them becoming victims of crime. Part of this is about watching your mates back if they get drunk.

Maybe we are being studentist?

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/04/2011 22:00

well get accused of being criminalist next. Smile

exoticfruits · 11/04/2011 22:21

No reasonable person would be angry because someone asked them to take care - which is effectively what they did.

Exactly. It is a sad thing if people can't open their mouths until they have properly analysed what they want to say. People make comments all the time-if you got picky you could tear them all to shreds! Most sensible people would have just smiled and said 'thank you' or 'I will' and passed on without further thought.

Kallista · 11/04/2011 22:35

I keep hoping a (good looking, single, with a fit body) policeman will stop to talk to me. Is that shallow and unfeminist and am i bothered?

GORGEOUSX · 11/04/2011 22:53

Gosh! I'm not used to people agreeing with me - have come all over with a rosy glow (not for being flamed, for once).

exoticfruits I think I love you. Grin

Goblinchild · 11/04/2011 22:54

Vic is very good-looking and fit, but not single. Still, two out of three.
