Teaching isn't compatible with parenting

So you think there are short days and long holidays, well hollow laugh! Am I the only teaching 'widow'? My DP seems to spend all of his evenings and weekends working, which doesn't make me a smiley mummy this Mother's Day after yet another day of sole childcare while lessons get planned, reports written and whatever-else for the little darlings. Some mitigating points:

  • when he's not working, he's usually great at domestic stuff and for this reason I count myself lucky
  • he is a perfectionist
  • I know one other teacher (who also works ridiculous hours) but maybe he's just avoiding family life.
So, put me straight, am I the only one or are there more?

I love teaching teenagers. My school is (ahem) "in an area of rural isolation and social deprivation", so lots of horrible issues and problems at home, but I bloody love my bunch of teens. They're lively and loud and enthusiastic, and I wouldn't go back to the middle class hot-house I started my career in.

I totally agree that there are moaners and whingers everywhere. I used to be one of the moaning teachers - DH used to get very very pissed off with me. Having taken nearly 4 years off since having babies, and now being back full time, I've realised that I love it, and have stopped moaning (as much as I used to anyway) and you know what, it's like a cloud has lifted... Perhaps it's all about attitude. Those teachers who insist that their job is the hardest in the world and that they simply have to work 60-70 hours every week in order to get thigns done (whilst moaning about it) maybe just need a bit of perspective and to realise that no one hands out prizes to martyrs....

Bit de-mob happy, mind - just broken up (woohoo)

By the way, whoever it was who claimed that bog-standard teachers earn £45k on the channel islands, the don't see - talking crap - first job advert states clearly that main pay scale goes up to £37,579.

Caz10 don't cancel your move, you are still welcome Grin. That ad is for Guernsey and am not sure if they are different to Jersey, but DH who is MPS teacher of 15 years qualification in a large secondary earns £46,000. So not talking crap at all.
