Teaching isn't compatible with parenting

So you think there are short days and long holidays, well hollow laugh! Am I the only teaching 'widow'? My DP seems to spend all of his evenings and weekends working, which doesn't make me a smiley mummy this Mother's Day after yet another day of sole childcare while lessons get planned, reports written and whatever-else for the little darlings. Some mitigating points:

  • when he's not working, he's usually great at domestic stuff and for this reason I count myself lucky
  • he is a perfectionist
  • I know one other teacher (who also works ridiculous hours) but maybe he's just avoiding family life.
So, put me straight, am I the only one or are there more?

And we like to think we work harder than anyone else, and moan about our jobs.

CurrySpice · 05/04/2011 22:55

I did not say that LDNmummy. What a silly thing to say. You are putting words into my mouth and you are doing your argument no favours by doing so

I said I couldn't think of another profession that gets thank you cards and gifts. I did not say "limitless praise" for goodness sakes.

So you can go and Hmm at someone else.

Right. I'm off. To write a presentation for a client meeting next week.

"My dad used to be a postman. He got Christmas cards with money in"

kangers · 05/04/2011 23:17

I was reading rom start of thread to page 4- very interesting, then decided to skip to the end. Not sue what happened but I guess someone started dissing or someone thought someone was dissing teachers!!

I am a teacher and get no cards etc (secondary) but we give out binman beer at Christmas- THEY LOVE IT!!

scottishmummy · 05/04/2011 23:24

in a nutshell apparently only teachers or their partners can opine about teaching

yes basically was discussed teaching is demanding, job which encroaches at times.as do other jobs upon families.also acknowledged teachers have favourable t&C unlike other working parents

some teachers said they work gazillion hours a week
some teachers said they dont

and somewhere down line it all got v humphy with wee ShockHmmConfusedfaces, bit of cut and paste and how very dare you

so in actual fact, just a regular aibu

kangers · 05/04/2011 23:27

kangers · 05/04/2011 23:40

Our binman would take our bin from drive if we forgot to put it out for the whole year- so a very good investment.

kangers · 05/04/2011 23:43

Also cash for milkman and postman and paperboy/ girl

itsalarf · 05/04/2011 23:49

I never give anyone any money. Shall I start a thread saying 'all teachers are meanies'. That should go down well I think Grin

scottishmummy · 05/04/2011 23:49

im torn, see the wisdom but im a tight arse.if i could brass it out on cheerie smile and gushing praise i would - cheaper you see

really only regularly tip hairdresser,as lets face it that's one person you dont want to piss off.they have a wide and global hold over one

do tip in restaurants, and café if i likey the service/food

scottishmummy · 05/04/2011 23:51

have never given teacher cash or gift but we did home made card and wonky cake.

itsalarf · 05/04/2011 23:53

Our bin people leave the bin where I can back the car into it, so they are not getting a penny or a drop!

kangers · 05/04/2011 23:53

Have friend who gives tins of roses to entire teams of teachers- they love it!

scottishmummy · 05/04/2011 23:56

whats not to love.except the gum glue ones of course.(i mean sweeties not teachers before anyone else rocks up champing on about teachers)

itsalarf · 06/04/2011 00:02

Gum glue ones? Enlighten please.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2011 00:04

nasty chewy toffee stick gums like glue,in gold foil wrapper i think

itsalarf · 06/04/2011 00:08

Ooh I know the ones. Not good. Teachers do love a box of sweets though. Honestly, you would think we'd never seen them before, blink and they are gone, even the horrible ones.
