To ask dd to use tampax

Weird title I know. Ok dd is 12 next week and started her periods a few months ago. She does synchronised swimming and is having to miss about one or two sessions a month due to her periods, which hasn't been a problem.
But she came on today and has a very important session on sunday, her and her duet partner are competing against some other teams and the team chosen gets to represent our town at a big competiton next month.
So far dd has been against the tampax idea.
AIBU to push the issue just for the sake of sunday?

Jesus, leave her alone ffs.

She knows about them and will use them if she wants. Cant believe some mums actually push this issue with their DDs. Whats wrong with them using towels if they are happy with that?

Why you are pushing her - is it because you are worried she will be disappointed if she doesnt get in the competition?

fairtradefloozy · 02/04/2011 14:08

I started when I was 9, a revelation in itself never mind tampons. I do use them now but still use "good old fashioned tampax" because I just cannot get on without an applicator. But I have always had really heavy periods so have had to use tampax and pads (in some cases maternity pads) for many years.
God, some things about being a girl are just pants !

Mrswhiskerson · 02/04/2011 14:09

Go on the tampax site they may send you a booklet on how to cope with periods that you can leave for your daughter to read , I had o e when I was twelve and Reading about it was much better than talking about it which mortified me , the booklet will explain about swimming and physical activity then leave your daughter to make her own mind up .

diddl · 02/04/2011 14:13

Of course you shouldn´t push her, but why is she so against it?

My daughter has used them since 10 but she was determined to due to horse riding & swimming.

Took a few tries though.

tyler80 · 02/04/2011 17:49

SardineQueen During my period my cervix is very low so the mooncup does sit right up against it. It's different for different people. I don't think anyone who struggles with the idea of tampons is going to get on with a mooncup though.

SardineQueen · 02/04/2011 17:53

How interesting tyler.

How does that make the statement "If she's to use a mooncup, for example, she'll need to know where her cervix is" correct though?

You know where your cervix is, great. People who don't can still use mooncups though.

I also wasn't suggesting that a mooncup was a top choice for a girl who didn't want to use tampons. Mainly because they are much larger and more daunting. I wouldn't have used one when I was a girl. I was just pointing out that the statement that you had to know where your cervix was in order to use mooncups was wrong. In case it put any posters off who might be wondering what they were.

I'm not sure why you've picked my post out TBH.

SardineQueen · 02/04/2011 18:01

Or do I need to make a list.

Women do not need to know where their cervix is to use a mooncup. Most women will not experience any mooncup/cervix interaction.

However on some women their cervix is low and the mooncup will be near it. Other women will find that their periods are too heavy for even a mooncup. Other women will have to practice a lot to insert it. Other women again will find it hard to remove. Some women may need to trim the stem, others may not. Some women have vaginas that slope in a way that means they will find it more of a trick to insert a mooncup. etc etc etc and covering every single different vagina type in the entire world.

Really it was a little throwaway post to correct something that was wrong. It is a shame when people say things like women need to know where their cervixes are to use mooncups as it puts people off. I thought it worth correcting. My sincere and heartfelt apologies that I didn't take every single possible conceivable type of vagina into account before posting.

grafenstolz · 02/04/2011 18:03

Blush Sorry to be causing dissent and confusion here - not to mention showing my ignorance. Blush Disclaimer: I've never used a mooncup. Blush I assumed they were like contraceptive caps and clearly I am completely wrong. I'll just go and hide in a hole, shall I?

grafenstolz · 02/04/2011 18:04

Particular apologies to SardineQueen and Tyler. As you were.

SardineQueen · 02/04/2011 18:05

grafenstolz - try one, they are fab Smile

I had never heard of them until I came on here and tried one after DD1 - they're just brilliant Smile

SardineQueen · 02/04/2011 18:05

Oh I'm just in a snippy mood, don't mind me!

grafenstolz · 02/04/2011 18:06

OK, then. If only to retain my credibility on MN. Grin

80sMum · 02/04/2011 18:07

God, I hate Tampax! Awful bulky fiddly things! All that unnecessary packaging and applicator thingy. Lil-lets are sooo much better! Get her to use those.

Scruff, I think you just have to take the bull by the horns. If she's started her period, and she wants to swim competitively, then she just has to get on with it.

Don't interfere too much. Just give her the facts. The thought of what might happen will be enough to make her just do it.

We all had to make this decision. No one likes the thought of inserting a tampon, but we all got through it.

valiumredhead · 02/04/2011 18:17

LILLETS

tyler80 · 02/04/2011 18:19

I agree that you don't need to know where your cervix is to use a mooncup. My comment was more in response to this "Mooncup does not sit right up near your cervix" because for some people it does.

And if you're using a mooncup for the first time and you're not that well acquainted with your body and find that the mooncup is sitting up against your cervix when you've heard that it shouldn't sit right up near it you might think you've done something wrong! I know it panicked me a little the first time I used a mooncup that I had some sort of prolapse because my cervix was so low. The diagram on the mooncup site gives the impression that you could have 3 mooncups up there before you'd hit your cervix!

Desiderata · 02/04/2011 18:20

I hate Lillets. The string isn't long enough, and they have no absorption whatsoever.

Yuck. Lillets are shite.

tyler80 · 02/04/2011 18:21

And in the same way you didn't want anyone put off mooncups because they didn't know where there cervix was I didn't want anyone put off mooncups because they thought they were doing something wrong because it sat against their cervix :-D

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 02/04/2011 18:22

I've been at a shingle beach today and can confirm that tampax are very popular, from all the plastic applicators on the stones.

Please don't flush tampon applicators

catinthehat2 · 02/04/2011 18:25

Crikey, do you work with Dr White?

SardineQueen · 02/04/2011 18:29

Fair enough tyler Smile

Interestingly I have never used an applicator tampon they freak me out a bit. I wonder if the Tampon lady knows that women tend to stick with their first brand?

SardineQueen · 02/04/2011 18:30

I mean, I don't know if they do Grin but it would make sense I think.

tyler80 · 02/04/2011 18:35

I have used applicator tampons in the past in emergency situations, they freak me out because they turn into these long rope like things on the end of the string Grin

wonderingsilly · 02/04/2011 18:46

When I have started my periods, pads were the only options as my mum was only using that. I wished I had tampons at that time because I had horrid periods, very heavy and it often went trough my trousers and I had to call my mum to pick me up from school because the situation was often unbearable.. And she was angry with me Sad.

I have 2 dds and I'm going to make sure they are confortable when they have their periods. I'll offer tampons and explain why it is so practical. If they don't want tampons, then they'll have pads and I'll make sure they have plenty of dark jeans/trousers/long coat/jacket they can have during their time of the month !

Obviously, I know I'm not helping with the swimming issue ! Sorry Smile
