To think selling your second hand reusable nappies is a bit gross?

Someone I know is selling her reusable nappies, which she has used for her 2 DC.

I know many people pass on baby clothes. I have been glad of hand me downs from friends and relatives but I'd never use second hand reusables. AIBU to think this is a bit gross?

Fortnum and Mason don't sell knickers. Not even edible ones!

Runningjustasfastasican · 30/03/2011 14:26

My DH would think I was having a laugh if I arrived home with second hand pants for him - and yes I do buy his underwear for him!

of course YABU...most washable nappies are excellent quality, hold up great wash after wash, are better for babies bottoms in general but can be very expensive.

My DD had some beautiful nappies, all of which were second hand.

FlingonTheValiant · 30/03/2011 14:27

Yes, so would I seth (although as none of my friends have DCs it'll be me giving away the too-small silk knickers :( ) :o

I've borrowed swimsuits from friends before, and that's never bothered me either.

Perhaps we just have very low standards Wink

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 30/03/2011 14:29

oh yes, I've borrowed swimsuits too.
And pyjamas would not bother me.

FlingonTheValiant · 30/03/2011 14:30

Now see I have raging full-blown OCD, and for some reason this doesn't bother me in the slightest.

But then I don't score very highly for cleaning issues, more's the pity

Whyriskit · 30/03/2011 14:31

I'm currently using the nappies I originally bought for DS1 on DS2. Does that count as icky or is it ok as they're brothers?

Champersonice · 30/03/2011 14:32

Mango - you make me LARF so much!

Rat - yes you can - get your facts right!

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby · 30/03/2011 14:33

Well, someone WANTED to buy my old nappies... Some were a little 'grey', and I was very clear about that (they had been used for 2 children already), but she wanted them to boost her supply... and wanted to give me money for them. I let her decide how much. (she wouldn't accept them for free).

So people do want them.

I would borrow a cossy, maybe pants? I am funny about it though (for me). I have had second hand pants for DD. They were clean and hardly worn. Not an issue.

I have 'reasons' for being picky with me... traumatic (for me) experiences mean I am funny about pants, towels and flannels that get used, 'down there'. I try not to transmit these 'fears' to DD and DS.

silverfrog · 30/03/2011 14:34

none of it bothers me either.

I used to often have lst minute sleepovers with friends form school (last minute as in phoning mum to say "don't bother picking me up toady, I'm going to X's" - used ot borrow clean socks/knickers/pyjamas etc.

would do the same now.

what do all the posters who feel a bit ick about it think of using eg towels in a hotel? been used several times by other people to wipe up all manner of bodily fluids, I'd bet, and to dry bottoms several times over. but then washed, nice and clean, and waitng for the next person.

I really don't get why anyone wouldn't use second hand reusables.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 30/03/2011 14:34

mind you my friend had to wear her brother's hand-me-down pants and feels she was scarred for life by it. Because they were y-fronts and she got laughed at in the school changing rooms Shock

Champersonice · 30/03/2011 14:34

Flingon you CANNOT have full blown raging OCD if you would wear second hand knickers, borrowed swimsuits etc.

RitaMorgan · 30/03/2011 14:36

Heh, hotel towels is a good one. And the sheets!!!

FlingonTheValiant · 30/03/2011 14:36

Yes, I do, OCD is not all about not liking dirty things.

RitaMorgan · 30/03/2011 14:36

OCD isn't Obsessive Cleanliness Disorder.

Champersonice · 30/03/2011 14:37

Hahahah Silverfrog love the fact that your Mummy is a Toady!! Smile

And don't even get me on hotel sheets/towels etc...it does get to me but I know most of it is my OCD problem. That is why I say, I personally think this is all icky but do not judge others for doing it...

Runningjustasfastasican · 30/03/2011 14:37

No it's ok if they're brothers Whyriskit - gross if you're buying them off someone you know and even more gross if you're buying them off eBay/gumtree etc - but only in my opinion obviously because I'm totally outnumbered :)

I'm listening to what everyone is saying about liners, washing, quality etc but you haven't changed my mind yet!

YABAT. I've been using the same Bumble washable nappies for over a year now and they are like new. My Motherease wraps look as though they have just come out of the packaging. I shan't be throwing them away, but passing them on to someone else, thus increasing their green credentials Smile

Champersonice · 30/03/2011 14:40

OCD isn't just about cleanliness, you are right. I am not fanatical about that side of things either but it does feature in my obsessives.

QuickLookBusy · 30/03/2011 14:42

I bought second hand cloth nappies. They just looked like new and smelt like new too! You also use a liner in them and a pad which I bought new.

Runningjustasfastasican · 30/03/2011 14:44

Always take towels with me and have been known to take sheets to hotels but at least always check them well. I try not to think about what others have been up to or how clean they are if I have to sleep on them! I've never really thought of myself as OCD, maybe I am!

Poor friend, Seth how awful for her!

Champersonice · 30/03/2011 14:47

Running - I try not to think about it, also but sometimes hard. I even get paranoid about the pillow and the mattress but I don't allow that thought to penetrate too deep otherwise I would be ill with this OCD and I don't let it rule me...well, not always!

Runningjustasfastasican · 30/03/2011 14:52

It's never stopped me staying in a hotel but I do think about it!

Where babies are concerned they're exactly like second hand clothes - baby clothes end up covered in vomit and poo anyway, so what's the difference with nappies?

chipmonkey · 30/03/2011 14:58

When I was born, my parents bought 48 terry nappies. I don't think they bought one new one after that right up to the day my brother, who is the youngest of four of us was potty-trained. That is the point of washables.

Also there is a very good second hand market for nappies like these which are gorgeous, can be customised and are very pricey so it benefits everyone if you can sell them on.
