To wish swishing capes and puritan hats would come back into fashion for blokes?

I watched the film Solomon Kane a bit ago and was very impressed with the <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.comingsoon.net/gallery/37883/Solomon_Kane_1.jpg&imgrefurl=www.comingsoon.net/films.php%3Fid%3D37883&usg=__1-0xjyAmjBDwQWBX2Hwge-ooa-U=&h=605&w=453&sz=45&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=RnIBzZC3EYTHjM:&tbnh=140&tbnw=105&ei=Qn2LTcu5HpCJ4QaF9eX6DQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsolomon%2Bkane%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1146%26bih%3D696%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=345&vpy=83&dur=83&hovh=260&hovw=194&tx=115&ty=138&oei=NXqLTfXFDoO1hAf52fHJDQ&page=1&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">swirly cape/wide brimmed hat look.

Dramatic entrances/exits, functional (keeping you warm and dry) yet stylish, it cuts a mean silhouette.

I like the thought of David Cameron swirling into a press conference accompanied perhaps with a few boos/hisses?

Not quite the same, but I was a youngster in the 70's and can remember my mum having a long purple cape trimmed with fake fur, it was really great for getting into at the bus stop if it was cold Grin

If you're not keen on the 1600's look, what would you like to see return?

I think I must be just an old romantic at heart because I've always had a thing for tricorn hats as well Blush Grin

What about for women?

Worried your arse looks bigger than you'd like in that new skirt? Care not a jot and just accentuate it with <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=hijabtrendz.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/trench2.jpg&imgrefurl=www.hijabtrendz.com/2009/01/25/colorful-trench-coats-usher-in-spring/&usg=__zDwEwKtLU4mYMOFquyf4SHNOTEk=&h=370&w=290&sz=42&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=C2akweynW80ZzM:&tbnh=123&tbnw=96&ei=IH6LTYi7PMrz4QbT8OirDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbustle%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1146%26bih%3D696%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=441&oei=AH6LTZfxOtGHhQe3goDFDQ&page=1&ndsp=34&ved=1t:429,r:29,s:0&tx=20&ty=65" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a bustle Grin

I've always had a penchant for the Cavalier Look - men with long hair definitely turn me on!

Butterbur · 24/03/2011 17:38

Never mind swishing cloaks for the blokes. I want one for myself, and always have. When I'm old enough to no longer care what people think, I shall have one made.

Salmotrutta · 24/03/2011 17:39

I think women should wear those tall pointy hats (like acone) with the veil trailing from the point. And those long pointy-sleeved dresses with the petticoat underneath. Very mediaeval.
Men should wear hose and big thigh-high boots with a doublet. And a hat with a feather in it.

Salmotrutta · 24/03/2011 17:40

a cone obviously!!

GentleOtter · 24/03/2011 17:43

And a return to them swooshing their cape artfully over puddles which we may step in.

Baddies may tie you to a railtrack, though whilst twirling their moustache....

AgentZigzag · 24/03/2011 19:04

Prefer the drinking/womanising persona than religious zealot then LadyT?

I suppose it could have had its advantages Grin

What's the consensus on top hats?

Sensual on <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=1.bp.blogspot.com/_W26j1nmynGY/TPd_0KbXzfI/AAAAAAAAABA/p4t_gfVV7eQ/s1600/gary-oldman-dracula.jpg&imgrefurl=nightscreatures.blogspot.com/2010/12/many-faces-of-dracula.html&usg=___o3XgZTl6IWEYULVZzuDeol9gSI=&h=600&w=400&sz=50&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=YBpXv7GEF9SQ9M:&tbnh=164&tbnw=109&ei=8YOLTey_IJXy4gaOkumyDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgary%2Boldman%2Bbram%2Bstokers%2Bdracula%2Bfilm%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1146%26bih%3D667%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=131&vpy=89&dur=33&hovh=275&hovw=183&tx=97&ty=158&oei=poOLTYLrB9G0hAeehL23DQ&page=1&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">some, sinister on <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.sightseeingtours.co.uk/london/images/jacktheripper5.jpg&imgrefurl=www.sightseeingtours.co.uk/london/jack-the-ripper-thames-cruise.htm&usg=__yE8RMibU235z67c4Zy-9c1cSjx4=&h=270&w=450&sz=12&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=kJObcnY9R907AM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=163&ei=MpWLTfbDBZOLhQf_2r23DQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djack%2Bthe%2Bripper%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1146%26bih%3D694%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=397&vpy=258&dur=1383&hovh=174&hovw=290&tx=149&ty=111&oei=MpWLTfbDBZOLhQf_2r23DQ&page=1&ndsp=27&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">others.

Short leather skirts on men - in the Roman style, mmm, also greekish - how about Eric Bana in, was it Troy? mmm
Elizabethan kit - I'm thinking Joseph Fiennes, mmm
Yes, tricorn hats with little queue, Tom Jones-esq, mmm
Top hats have promise - I'm thinking Damian thingy in The Forsyte Saga, mmm
WWI uniform - that blond fella in the remake of 39 steps, mmm, mmmm
Must go and lie down now.

wishingchair · 24/03/2011 21:46

Breeches - yum

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/03/2011 21:52

men in nice tight hose so we can comment on their legs.

padded Henry VIII-style codpieces, just so we could mock

tricorn hats because they can be doffed so nicely

and for women, huuuuuge great hats like in photos of the Suffragettes

FlaminGreatGallah · 24/03/2011 21:53

White shirts with billowy sleeves should make a comeback. Not for the likes of Cameron though.

Chil1234 · 24/03/2011 21:56

YABU... give a man a swishy cape and a pointy hat and he'd start looking for witches to burn or continents to colonise. They're much less dangerous in slacks.

FlaminGreatGallah · 24/03/2011 21:57

Haven't seen the film OP but that bloke looks just like the man in this video. From the olden days.

AgentZigzag · 24/03/2011 22:00

I can't find a piccy that does him justice with his tricorn on, but Poldark ( warning - 1970's horn) was pretty hot.

The picture's a bit out of focus, but then the 70's was a bit wasn't it? Grin

Mixed up in the photos I was looking at was the lovely <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=x99.xanga.com/e12a9ae06733384533524/m58031296.jpg&imgrefurl=caffeinatedangel.xanga.com/552771365/ioan-gruffudd/&usg=__f4oyqcunsRyBAQw_YWpNIE3Au4o=&h=462&w=580&sz=51&hl=en&start=86&zoom=1&tbnid=ItA7SwfK8grtWM:&tbnh=120&tbnw=136&ei=Zb6LTeGRHYuo4AbfqbXHDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3DIoan%2BGruffudd%2Bhornblower%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1146%26bih%3D694%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C1596&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=756&vpy=240&dur=1498&hovh=200&hovw=252&tx=132&ty=144&oei=Pb6LTf_FD426hAejkYGwCw&page=4&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:86&biw=1146&bih=694" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ioan Griffiths, no reason for posting him, but he should be somewhere Grin

Salmotrutta, when I was a small child, I had a pointy hat with a veil coming from the top. I got it from Disneyland, and loved it so very much and wore it as often as my mum would let me.

happy days.

foundwanting · 24/03/2011 22:03

That was for you, OP.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/03/2011 22:03

I would like to see a return to ridiculous Edwardian underwear for men. Boxer shorts are just too frivolous.

AgentZigzag · 24/03/2011 22:08

Arf at the Witchfinder General in beige slacks Chil, perhaps a Christmas jumper for good measures? Grin

Thanks for the extra hatted piccy of Ioan foundwanting, very distinguished.
