to secretly judge a mum who doesn't work but bought her son's 1st birthday cake at Waitrose?

Note that she's a REALLY one-up-manship yummy mummy who doesn't work because 'money is the man's responsibility - I'm the homemaker'. Then I hear her DH praising her for 'buying' a great cake for DS's 1st birthday. OK, I accept not everyone can cook. And after a few years, of with a few DCs of course we're all going to revert to shop cakes. And Waitrose cakes taste nice and lots of my own efforts are a bit dodgy. But no job, and the 1st birthday? C'mon... make an effort!

OP posts:
Mumleigh · 16/03/2011 09:19

I bought both my DCs first birthday cakes from Waitrose even though I am a sahm.
The 2nd B'day cakes were made by my neighbour who owns a cake shop.

For my DSs third I decided to make one from scratch as I actually really love baking. He was at the age when he wanted to help and got a bit over excited and fell off a stall. The result was two hours in A&E, a half finished cake and a scar for life!

Any baking of special occasion cakes that take a bit more concentration now get made once the DCs are safely tucked up in bed ( made one last night for DH!)

Bugger. I thought this thread was going to be about a benefit claimant spending taxpayers' money in Waitrose. I anticipated a better quality of judging. OP, is this the only thing you can find to judge? Must try harder.

I now have a quandary, however. I am a SAHM one day per week. Would a small cupcake be an appropriate level of baking? I don't want to miss my baking targets lest I be judged.

Rafi · 16/03/2011 09:25

I agree yabu but to be fair, the OP did accept the verdict and apologise several pages back.

52Girls · 16/03/2011 09:26

No, op. Yabu. Your 'friend' is right - that is what Waitrose is there for and good for her !

JemimaMuddleFuck · 16/03/2011 09:29

The baking target is everything baked from scratch; whether that be the standard daily loaf, baguettes, biscuits, cookies etc.
It is also essential to source the genuine ingredients.

Baguettes must be made from unbleached flour fermented in the gussets of virgin women from Normandy. Basque will do at a push.

Don't get me started on crepes or ice cream.

noddyholder · 16/03/2011 09:32

I have never baked a birthday cake and ds will be 17 in May. Far too many other things to do and plenty of cheap cakes in the supermarket which stick to the walls and carpets just as well as any homemade ones

I'm going to go against the grain and say YANBU.

I would probably secretly judge this too. If she's ultra judgy and competitive herself I would have to snigger that she couldn't construct a simple cake for a baby. Especially if she describes herself as a 'homemaker' with a 'traditional' womans role (taken from comment about mans job to bring in cash). However she would probably view a Waitrose cake as one up on homemade... if she's that sort of woman Grin.

So, yeah, YANBU for secretly judging... you made a mistake in voicing it though Grin

YABU - since when has being a sahm been the easy option which leaves loads of time for extra jobs? Having a one year old is hard work, however much time you choose to/are able to spend with them.

TandB · 16/03/2011 09:42

"The baking target is everything baked from scratch; whether that be the standard daily loaf, baguettes, biscuits, cookies etc.

Yes, but Jemima, I am only a SAHM for one day out of five. This presumably entitles me to a four fifths discount on my baking targets. How do I calcualate this?

thekidsmom · 16/03/2011 09:43

Am about to start baking DD's cup cake tower for her 18th this weekend. Why the hell didnt I think of Waitrose!!! is it too late?!

Should at least be Maison Blanc for an 18th, I guess...

charitygirl · 16/03/2011 09:44

Have to agree it's a bit pathetic (but only worth commenting on if she's a tedious one-upper herself). The PINT of a child's birthday is not some perfect cake, tasting of shop. It's all Mun or Dad's crap (or brill) homemade efforts.

charitygirl · 16/03/2011 09:44

Pint?? Point.

HappyAsIAm · 16/03/2011 09:45

YABU

I wouldn't judge her, but I know that my mum secretly would

RunAwayWife · 16/03/2011 09:50

Put your claws away and get over it

slightlymad72 · 16/03/2011 09:51

I am a SHAM and have baked the kids cakes for years, they order the design I make it, sometimes taking up to 2 weeks to do one cake. I was feeling very proud of myself, knowing that finally I have accomplished something that fits into the criteria of being a SAHM.
SAHM = too much time on your hands = bake elaborate cakes for kids

After reading Jemimas post though I realise that I have failed yet again, Whilst I reach many baking targets there are some that I hadn't realised where on the list. Does anybody know if you can buy gussets of virgin women from normandy on mail order?

I am now going to do penance for yet again failing in my duties as a SAHM. Wink

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 16/03/2011 09:53

I forgot to get DD a birthday cake for her first birthday as we were all too busy vomiting at the time and I was just glad to be able to stand up.

Luckily I have a friend who knew the chocolate caterpillar cake rule and sorted out a little tea party for her when we were better so there's a photo for the photo album. Not that I know where the photo is, but it was 12 years ago so I think I can be forgiven.

DooinMeCleanin · 16/03/2011 09:53

My Dc always get home made birthday cakes and I work and look after many pets. [smug]

ithaka · 16/03/2011 10:00

'Depends on the shop ithaka, once you have tried this you will never be able to choke down a 'homemade' cake again...'

I would bet good money my homemade cakes taste better than those. Mine are made with love and you just can't buy that.

TandB · 16/03/2011 10:02

"Mine are made with love and you just can't buy that."

You can. They sell it in Harrods food hall. £3.99 for a pack of 10. Lovely.

52Girls · 16/03/2011 10:03

Anyway...there is definitely an unwritten rule that you must have either a hedgehog or caterpillar cake for a first birthday so I've changed my mind.

WHAT WAS SHE THINKING????!!!!!!

waffleanddaub · 16/03/2011 10:07

I have made a cake like princess castle and a pirate's chest amongst others. I am obviously totally superior and wonderful, therefore.

Get a grip OP, YABU

Kewcumber · 16/03/2011 10:10

we went to a birthday party last week (SAHM) with NO birthday cake Shock. Presumably OP and some others would have passed out from the shock of it. (Actually it was pretty odd)

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2011 10:11

at OP. Of course YABU.

Hulababy I am intruiged by your birthday cake challenge. Sounds fun.

Bonsoir · 16/03/2011 10:13

OK, so it worse to buy a birthday cake or omit to have a birthday cake at all? And how close is the correlation between home made birthday cakes in childhood and class of degree?
