I mean, it's not like your knickers need a full cycle to get clean?

DH and I wash our smalls after a shower/bath - they are never in the main laundry. My kids boxers/knickers are washed in washing machine with the rest of theit laundry though.

I thought about this this morning when I went to drop off my friends son. My friend had the whole washing line outside full of boxers and knickers!

Thumb - we go home every summer and I never handwash my clothes there partly because we stay with family who will happily do it for us!

I couldn't handwash a pile of clothes because its hardwork and I have become too lazy to do it.

Its a completely different thing to knickers though, you are taught from an early age and it becomes part of the routine

Beta - No, I never have any dirty knickers lying around!

what are bad girls taught to do with their knickers, then?

beesimo · 12/03/2011 14:18

OP don't worry about being 'odd' or whats normal for you I have only been loking at MM for a short while since I broke my flipping leg and I'll tell you what there really isn't anything as queer as folk!

beesimo · 12/03/2011 14:23

looking

valiumredhead · 12/03/2011 14:23

Of course you're not oli Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 12/03/2011 14:24

Doesnt handwashing use far more water than machine washing?

I dont get this lazy stuff. I had a friend who insisted on scrubbing her floors by hand because using a mop was lazy. I think she had some sort of Cinderella complex (did I just make that up?).

Should we all stand at the scullery sink scrubbing our knickers whilst brushing a strand of hair from our fresh, weather tanned faces, the tiddlers munching on bread and lard......

Or just chuck it all the in the Whirlpool at 40 and watch a bit of Glee....

BlooferLady · 12/03/2011 14:25

Ha ha Thumb is OK, I grinned anyway! Yar, I do think OP should embrace the loveliness of the spin cycle, just didn't want the poor lass suffering accusations of a manky minge Grin

bonkers20 · 12/03/2011 14:32

OP, I retract my question about you being a bit mad. Maybe you should have given us a bit of historical background in your original message!

How long have you lived in the UK? I guess you now know that washing underwear along with everything else is the norm. Enjoy!

judgejudie · 12/03/2011 15:24

jesus, i do worry that some posters on here are left in sole charge of small children Confused - they really should be supervised for their own safety

buttonmoon78 · 12/03/2011 15:28

MrsDeVere I wholeheartedly agree with the Hmm about laziness. I mean, is it lazy to use a vacuum? To use an oven rather than a range (as in old-fashioned, not nice Stoves one)? To use an electric iron rather than an iron place in the fire one?

And as for wash day - ?? It happens at least once a day in my house.

tyler80 · 12/03/2011 15:48

I've washed out underwear in the sink before when needs must but it's not something I'd ever choose to do and afterwards they never felt as clean as if they'd been in the washing machine.

I'm actually surprised at the number who wash underwear at 60. I wash everything but towels/tea towels and bedsheets at 40.

Just checked, labels in my underwear say 40 degrees too, doesn't washing at 60 ruin the elastic?

FattyArbuckel · 12/03/2011 15:53

OP must be thrilled to have asked the question!

Life changing answer!

Blatherskite · 12/03/2011 15:54

I was about to ask the same thing tyler All my pants say wash at 40 degrees, wouldn't regular 60 degree washes ruin them?

Youllskimmer · 12/03/2011 15:56

I suck the carpet clean instead of hoovering.
It saves on electricity and is good exercise, people who use hoovers are lazy.

People on MN should 'suck it up' more often.

baskingseals · 12/03/2011 16:02

pmsl at youll

was going to post something sensible but laughing too much now

op yabu

Laquitar · 12/03/2011 16:02

No i wash my sexy Grin ones at 60 degrees too and they are ok.

I don't believe the labels. They are always over the top imo, like when they say 'dry clean only'. I'm not paying for dry clean i just put everything in w/m.

tyler80 · 12/03/2011 16:03

Ah, but i'm tight thrifty so don't wash anything at 60 unless absolutely necessary, saves my electricity bills :-)

Laquitar · 12/03/2011 16:07

Tbh i don't know how much difference in electricity per cycle between 40-60. Do you know?

dementedma · 12/03/2011 16:08

weird thread. with 5 of us in the house, I have no intention of handwashing 35 pairs of undies a week. Hmmm, that might be a bit less as have minging normal 9 year old Boy who is prone to re-wearing if he thinks he can get away with it.

WentworthMillerMad · 12/03/2011 16:14

This obviously a wind up.
I boil wash mine - periods? Hello!

tyler80 · 12/03/2011 16:14

Just found this stat " Doing washing at 60 degrees centigrade will use almost 30% more electricity as around 90% of the energy used by the washing machine will be used to heat the water to the higher temperature"

LDNmummy · 12/03/2011 16:19

Im sorry to say this but I think that is not hygienic at all! You need a proper wash to get rid of the bacteria, especially as a woman. If you had a slight bacterial thing going on (that may not be noticable at first) and you didn't wash the knickers properly, the bacteria wouldn't be washed away and you would end up putting a not fully clean pair of knickers back on. Its most effective if you combine both as we do in my home. Give them a quick going over then bung them in the washing machine.

Laquitar · 12/03/2011 16:21

Thanks tyler. It is more than i thought then.

fifi25 · 12/03/2011 16:23

Tyler - im 30 as well, got 3 kids and no way have i got time for a 60 wash to finish - probably is more hygenic to was my knickers by hand then ha Smile
