I mean, it's not like your knickers need a full cycle to get clean?

DH and I wash our smalls after a shower/bath - they are never in the main laundry. My kids boxers/knickers are washed in washing machine with the rest of theit laundry though.

I thought about this this morning when I went to drop off my friends son. My friend had the whole washing line outside full of boxers and knickers!

3 words Get A Life!

Seriously though yabu.

cantspel · 12/03/2011 13:39

This place is a real eye opener as i never knew people are so fixated about their pants.
All pants here just go in the laudry bin and are washed along with the rest of the washing. they then hang on the line or the airer to dry and are then folded and put away by who ever has a spare 10 minutes to do so.

OliPolly · 12/03/2011 13:40

Now I admit that IABU but I think its mean to suggest that I am walking around in dirty knickers! Grin Loads of people handwash and things do get clean you know!

I shall start the experiment from tomorrow!

Have a fab day ladies Smile

But knickers get ...well...stuff on them....so they need a hot wash. You're making work for yourself OP...you didn't have a machine in Zimbabwe...you do now!

itssnotfunny · 12/03/2011 13:42

Oh i completely get what you mean - i too am the same but instead of just my smalls i actually get itnhe shower every morning fully clothed and just wash hair, body and clothes all in one go with a glug of imperial leather. On sunny days i just sit in the garden and dry and it saves me loads of time getting dressed too. In the winter when i dont dry as quick i do go a bit foisty though YABU!

WhatKatieDid · 12/03/2011 13:45

If she wears gloves she can handwash at higher than 45 degrees to be fair. each to their own and all that, i think OP and her DP are endearingly bizarre Grin

but what is a scullery, i must know beesimo. i thought it had something to do with coal not washing. i think i want one!

valiumredhead · 12/03/2011 13:46

Now I admit that IABU but I think its mean to suggest that I am walking around in dirty knickers!

But it's ok to suggest others are lazy? Wink

Sidge · 12/03/2011 13:47

I don't wear knickers so not an issue for me, but all of my family's clothes (pants included) go in the washing machine.

That's what it's for, surely? Why have a washing machine and hand wash stuff unless very delicate?

itssnotfunny · 12/03/2011 13:47

isnt a scullery a utility room but in an older house

thumbwitch · 12/03/2011 13:48

A scullery is the back kitchen, used to be used for the washing up. Usually in larger old houses, yes.

Sidge - you don't wear knickers? What, not at all?

Sassybeast · 12/03/2011 13:51

Ewwwwwwwwwww. Minging.

pawsnclaws · 12/03/2011 13:52

I'm laughing at Netto's uni mate and his pants airing system. I was really shocked at work once when (male) colleagues were discussing their "lucky dip" pants - ie you chuck them in the laundry bin and then if you don't have any clean you just "lucky dip" from the bin - gross!

Another house where sadly every day is laundry day - three ds so I spend my life washing and folding small pants.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 12/03/2011 13:58

YABizarre! I don't ever think "Oh, I know I should wash those pants by hand, but I can't be arsed, I'll use the washing machine"

I do the washing, including pants. If you are using water/ electricity on a wash anyway, why not stick the pants in too Confused What is the moral benefit of handwashing them??

beesimo · 12/03/2011 13:58

In farmhouses a scullery is a room off your kichen where you do 'dirty' or menial jobs. So far example whe MIL was a lass she would be in there peeling spuds in the scullery sink. The kitchen was used for cooking and eating and a area for chairs ect for the family/yard lads to get warm and relax. The you have your walk in pantry where the food is stored and a boot room I expect you get what that ones for. The front room or parlour just get used Christmas and holidays when you have company. You have to have set areas for set jobs or you end up living in a midden

BlooferLady · 12/03/2011 14:00

holy cow, have none of you lot ever lived abroad?! Is only in the luxurious West that everything gets laundered by machine. I lived in East Asia for a bit and yes, you wash your smalls in the evening by hand. Is a habit. And I remember reading an interview with the supermodel Giselle who said she still washes her knickers in the sink at night and leaves them drying on the radiator, so we can assume 'tis the done thing in Brazil too.

Am most amused by the famously liberal and middle-class MN coming over all English and parochial - not everyone lives like us, you know!

(When I got home from Asia I was so pathetically glad to see a washing machine I could have wept)

ohnoshedittant · 12/03/2011 14:01

OP that is a bit weird. Just put them in the machine.

It wasn't that long ago though that not everyone had a washing machine and I would imagine there are many parts of the world still where people don't have washing machines. As far as I know there aren't huge problems with fanjo/willy rot so I don't think hand washing your smalls is quite the horror everyone is making it out to be!

bonkers20 · 12/03/2011 14:05

The only time I have washed smalls in a shower is when we've travelling in India and not had washing facilities. I have no idea why you would choose to do something like this. Are you a bit mad?

Do you use pantyliners to keep the ick off your knicks? If not then I'd say they need a nice wash in the machine.

BlooferLady · 12/03/2011 14:05

November 25, 2003 - The Sunday Mirror reports that despite her success, Gisele Bundchen is still down-to-earth. She says: "In my country, all good girls are taught to wash out their undies in the bathroom. I still wash out my own knickers when I have a shower at the end of the day - regardless of where I am."

Case rested.

  1. I cannot believe I bothered to look that up
  1. What the hell is my husband going to think of that particular Google search?!
valiumredhead · 12/03/2011 14:06

holy cow, have none of you lot ever lived abroad?!

Errr yes actually, for many years and also did without a machine for those years BUT it is a bit odd that as the OP has a machine now she doesn't use it.

If the OP had said " I think everyone who machine washes their clothes is lazy as machines are a luxury" then I would've agreed with her.

Sidge · 12/03/2011 14:07

thumbwitch I only wear undies if I'm wearing a skirt or dress, which is rarely!

I just hate wearing knickers, it's not minging as I change my clothes daily. I can't find them comfy regardless of the size, style etc.

OliPolly · 12/03/2011 14:07

Of course I have embraced the washing machine, the vacuum cleaner and all other stuff but I have just held on to this apparently weird habit that is actually quite common where I come from.

I have already admitted that in context, IABU so lets keep it light please, I am a gentle soul Smile

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 12/03/2011 14:08

Yes but blooferlady, you have wrecked your own case to some extent by pointing out how pathetically happy you were to get back to having a washing machine!
I can see the reasons for doing it abroad and have been to a few countries where it has been necessary and I have therefore done it - but if you have the option of using a machine, it's a bit odd not to use it, IMO.

thumbwitch · 12/03/2011 14:10

God, must remember to use smileys in places - blooferlady, please take it that there is a Grin after my first line addressed to you.

Sidge - can't quite agree with you there, I do think that is a bit ick, but each to their own.:)

OliPolly · 12/03/2011 14:10

I am not weird after all! Smile

OP posts:
BetamaxBandit · 12/03/2011 14:12

OP are you my ex housemate?

The one who used to leave her dirty knickers and bras in the bathroom sink all day to soak...?
