I mean, it's not like your knickers need a full cycle to get clean?

DH and I wash our smalls after a shower/bath - they are never in the main laundry. My kids boxers/knickers are washed in washing machine with the rest of theit laundry though.

I thought about this this morning when I went to drop off my friends son. My friend had the whole washing line outside full of boxers and knickers!

Gor, I must be a bit of a minger as all of our washing except sheets gets done at 40 degrees. And my mum must be a TOTAL minger as she insists on putting pretty much everything on a cold wash, in an eco stylee. I do draw the line at that.

OP - what will you do with all your free time now you're a machine-washed pants lady? Grin

pawsnclaws · 12/03/2011 17:18

Poor OP, must've seemed a perfectly reasonable question ....

Just one question, surely if you handwash aren't all your pants wringing wet? At least with the washing machine they get a decent spin and dry easily.

NorthernGobshite · 12/03/2011 17:28

WTF? Is this a joke?
Put your knickers in the washing machine!

How dirty are your pants exactly that you don't want them lying around in the washing basket....[shudders to think emoticon]?

MillyR · 12/03/2011 17:33

Are you really meant to wash underwear at 60 degrees? I wash everything at 40.

Figgyrolls · 12/03/2011 17:34

My washing machine is always on sadly - 1x baby, 1x toddler, 1 x dh and his workshirts, 1 x mother permananently covered in goo from baby/toddler plus sheets/towels. I never get on top of it! However bra's I wash in the bath with me as they last a wee bit longer (although not wireless maternity bras they go in on a normal wash) I think we would get more skank haning around from the children than my knickers but I could be wrong!

LessNarkyPuffin · 12/03/2011 17:38

I do this when on holiday somewhere warm. You can have stuff washed, wrung out and on the line in minutes and it's back in and dry in an hour. It means you don't need to take anywhere near as much stuff. It's too bloody cold here though, and it's easy to chuck it into the machine with everything else. I sometimes have a day when the machines not on. Occasionally.

LessNarkyPuffin · 12/03/2011 17:40

I have to ask people what underwear they have that survives being regularly machine washed at 60 Shock

Are you all in flannel pants???

Bonsoir · 12/03/2011 17:40

What?!

The only laundry that ever gets done in this household is in the washing machine. Nothing, but nothing, gets washed by hand. I'm not going to waste time washing by hand when I own a very nice washing machine and tumble drier...

LessNarkyPuffin · 12/03/2011 17:44

I have some cashmere that has to be handwashed. It sits and looks at me for a couple of weeks until I feel guilty and shift myself to wash it.

Gingefringe · 12/03/2011 17:45

DH and I wash our smalls after a shower/bath eh??

WTF does that mean? Do you wash them in the shower/bath and does your DH do it too? Strange thread.

tyler80 · 12/03/2011 17:49

We have a handwash option on our machine, that's what handwash on the label means isn't it? Grin

verytellytubby · 12/03/2011 17:51

Strangest AIBU I've ever read. Must stop drinking at lunchtime.

Mumcentreplus · 12/03/2011 17:54

I wash my pants in the washing machine unless they are too flimsy or sexy numbers Wink

VinegarTits · 12/03/2011 18:02

i dont think there is anything wrong with hand washing your own draws, not sure why some are so shocked by that Hmm

but yabu to say its lazy to wash them in the machine, each to their own like

BabyDubsEverywhere · 12/03/2011 18:17

I'm sorry, and I'm sure it's because I haven't experienced it, but I wouldn't consider hand washed underear clean, things just dont feel clean when handwashed to me. It would be okay in an emergency i suppose but not for normal day-to-day.

I put unwashed clothes (any item) in the machine, then remove them once washed and dried. It is easier, but i dont think it makes me lazy. I have lots of other things to be doing and this saves so much time.

I am lazy though...but for different reasons Grin

Malificence · 12/03/2011 18:46

The only time I hand wash underwear is when on holiday, or sometimes if my knickers have blood on them and need soaking first.
What a very weird OP, and that's saying something on Mumsnet!

What's wrong with having worn underwear in a laundry basket for a few days? Confused

Psammead · 12/03/2011 19:13

YABU to think it's lazy - I just think it's practical to throw them in the washing machine.

YANBU to carry on doing it the way you are used to, though. Bloody hell - some people here seem to think it's necessary to disinfect their pants. What do you do in them??? There's no ebola living in them after a day's wear, you know! Fine if you get thrush or something, but do people really still boil wash? Shock

Clary · 12/03/2011 19:21

Gosh I think knickers do need to go in the machine!

I handwash my bras tho - but then that's because they cost about £30 each (wierd size not sold in M&S) and it tells me to on the label - at that price I'll do what they say! Grin

Roffle @ "laundry day" - that'll be just about every day in this house. Seriously, I have 3 DC and my weekly tally of 7-8 loads is low compared to some folk I know....

tiredfeet · 12/03/2011 19:30

Oh ffs this thread is making me laugh so hard I can't feed ds to sleep
Worth it though Grin

Op your logic is about as bizarre as my friend who thought it was 'disgusting' to put his worn underwear in the laundry basket to wait until wash day, so he hung it round his flat to 'air' in the meantime. Niiiiice

pigletmania · 12/03/2011 19:34

YABVVVVU I love a nice clean freshly laudered pair of knickers. How do you propose we wash our knickers Hmm. When I put my knickers in the wash i am guranteed a clean hygenic pair of knickers to wear.

frazzle26 · 12/03/2011 19:34

It just seems a lot more effort to wash things by hand (unless it specifically requires it) when you could just put it in the machine. Seems like a very odd thing to do IMO and as already mentioned one of the strangest AIBU ever.

Bearcat · 12/03/2011 19:54

20 years ago a friend of mine who is married to a doctor said he wouldn't let her wash the families pants with the teatowels.
I have often thought about this over the years when I have washed all my coloureds with my whites with our pants and teatowels but never let it stop me [Embarrased] and I think we've been pretty healthy.
Had a bit of a disaster a couple of weeks ago when a new (DS) polo shirt died a few things including a bit of a tie die on one of his favourite going out shirts. Ooops!

Bearcat · 12/03/2011 19:56

Think thet should have been [blushed]
did that work?

pigletmania · 12/03/2011 19:56

No I would not wash the underwear with teatowels or tableclothes, they go in the main family laundry with the towels and clothes.

twolittlemonkeys · 12/03/2011 19:56

I never wash my smalls separately, life's too short. YABVU - it's not laziness, it's making effective use of my time as I have better things to do than handwash my undies thank you very much! Grin
