in varying shades of pink too...its all i ever put DD in (she is 20 months) but one of my friends says she hates it and would not let her DD be seen dead in it :o

so whats the MN verdict? cute or tacky?

(strongly suspects verdict will be chavvy/tacky etc!)

I like Sanrio characters but I wouldn't put them on a young child.

My DD's are chavtastic then. DD3 (20 months) is obsessed with it and is currently wearing sparkly skirt, two HK t shirts and an HK cardigan.

I however resent paying the HK tax - £5 for some bloody felt tips.

TorcherQueenie · 08/03/2011 18:37

DD adores it we have Hello Kitty everywhere down to the magazine and Hello Kitty shoes.

I like the more gothy Hello Kitty stuff but my laptop's covered in stickers of her as DD trys to include me in her obsession anyway.

TorcherQueenie · 08/03/2011 18:37

Normantebbit Have you tried Ebay? We've never had to pay the tax on stuff from HK on there.

Olivetti · 08/03/2011 18:39

I used to think character outfits were chavvy, but decided I was being unreasonable - adults may not like them, but all kids seem to, and I can't see that it does any harm now and again. I love Hello Kitty, for what it's worth!

SecretNutellaFix · 08/03/2011 18:39

tacky, I'm sorry, but that's what I think about all character clothing, especially when it's all over e.g leggings/ trousers, t-shirt and cardigan/ hoodie.
Little touches can be cute, but otherwise I'm not keen.

Ooopsadaisy · 08/03/2011 18:41

Sorry - don't like HK at all.

I've seen adults in it too. Hmm

ragged · 08/03/2011 18:44

OP: are you my 9yo DD in disguise .
It's a bit silly little girlish to me... but to each their own!

SarahStrattonHasNiceBears · 08/03/2011 18:46

I love HK Blush

curlymama · 08/03/2011 18:51

YANBU, I love Hello Kitty. It may be chavvy to some, but if it is, it's in the same league as burberry! I remember being a child and the only place you could get HK was Harrods! (Didn't spend much time with my Dad when I was growing up, when I did, he took me to Harrods pet shop to look at puppies and Harrods toy kingdom to buy my affection with HK).

LittleJennyRobyn · 08/03/2011 18:57

Not keen on character clothing and try to avoid at all costs, However....Hello kitty is another story, Both DD's Love it.
Ones 8 and the other is 23!!! Grin

I must admit i quite like it too. Gotta be better than Barbie!!

saffy85 · 08/03/2011 19:08

DD (3) loves it and it's one of the few things we agree on when clothes shopping for her. Mind you I don't mind character clothes that much- DD wears this stuff not me so if she wants a peppa pig (I hate that pig btw) instead of a plain one or whatever I don't mind at all. Long as I have the money to buy it.

MIL loves buying DD clothes but is always disappointed that DD doesn't get very excited (she does always say thank you though) by what she chooses. I've pointed out to her if she wants DD to be uber ecstatic about she's got her to get something featuring HK, Tinkerbell, etc Grin but she never does.

Clytaemnestra · 08/03/2011 19:10

I used to live in Japan, Hello Kitty is allowed for all ages there without being even slightly chavvy.

I don't have it much for myself anymore but DD (17mos) has some bits, she points at anything she sees with Hello Kitty and says CAT, so she enjoys it which means it's fine by me :)

GlitterHo · 08/03/2011 19:11

im guilty op YANBU

Anonymousbird · 08/03/2011 19:15

Uber tack, sorry.
Character clothes? WRONG
Everything in pink? WRONG

Maybe a couple of accessories, or a bag or something, but clothing? ALWAYS WRONG!

"I don't have it much for myself anymore" - Shock. Words fail me!

Katey1010 · 08/03/2011 19:17

Hate Disney, LOVE Hello Kitty. DD currently wearing HK onesie. It is the only pink I allow Grin

TruthSweet · 08/03/2011 19:45

I had so much HK stuff and it has gradually been appropriated by my 3 DDs. They particularly love the cartoons (DH bought me the box set pre-DDs!) as they are HK reworkings of Heidi/Snow White/Alice in Wonderland.

They don't have too many clothes though it's mainly hand bags and accessories. 17m old DD3 love tottering around the house with a fluorescent pink bag with HK in flares on it - to my shame she takes it out with her Blush

fedupofnamechanging · 08/03/2011 20:02

My DD (3.5) loves it. I've bought the HK bedding and a couple of pictures for her bedroom walls. She also has one HK t-shirt (present from MIL). I think that having a few HK things are okay, but too much (lampshades, rugs, mirrors, CD player) all in one room is tacky.

Firawla · 08/03/2011 21:02

I quite like it, would probably get some of it for a girl if they liked it. Have got some for neice before.
I don't mind character clothing, it may be slightly tacky but it brings a smile to the children's faces and tbh they are the ones wearing it so if they like it then why not? I always used to say I'll never buy loads of character stuff, but if i get thomas or chuggington or whatever else pj or tshirt for my little boy he is over the moon with it, so I have grown to accept character clothing now. Children are not just to be used as a doll for our own clothing preference, they have their own likes so its nice to encourage them to choose etc (obviously not young babies, but toddlers who have a preference)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/03/2011 21:11

DH loves to remind me that pre-DD I vowed never to let my child wear character clothing, was very pompous about it. But the look on her face when she saw an In the Night Garden coat in the shop really pulled me up. As long as the clothing is appropriate, then who am I to say she can't have Upsy Daisy on her coat when she loves it so much.

Meglet · 08/03/2011 21:14

Tacky.

But I love it. DD has a couple of Hello Kitty tops (both are hand-me-downs, it doesn't count if I haven't spent money on them). I have some HK socks, bowl, slippers and stationery Blush.

What's wrong with character clothing? Confused

saffy85 · 08/03/2011 21:24

"I did see a Hello Kitty DVD once as the DC insisted I check if out from the library. It's worse than TelleTubbies. I thought my prescription drugs had gone funny."

Grin yep me too. DD insisted on spending the last of her birthday money (£3) on a HK dvd. Oh dear god. I will never complain about anything on Cbeebies ever again.
