in varying shades of pink too...its all i ever put DD in (she is 20 months) but one of my friends says she hates it and would not let her DD be seen dead in it :o

so whats the MN verdict? cute or tacky?

(strongly suspects verdict will be chavvy/tacky etc!)

I remember being so disdainful of character clothing but read on here someone saying remember when you were a child, you always remember your favourite character kit. Mine was a my little pony shoe bag and a my little pony clock. My best friend had care bear wall paper. Happy days :)

I love Hello Kitty stuff, my DD is getting this for her Christmas www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us/Toys/Role-Play/My-First-Hello-Kitty-Kitchen-%280077142%29?cm_mmc=CSE--ChannelAdvisor--GoogleBase-_-0077142&CAWELAID=614535925 and I will dress her in the clothes as well, its harmless enough, certainly more appropriate than Bratz or various other things aimed at little girls.

Clytaemnestra- Did you ever visit Sanrio Land when you lived in Japan? I would soooooo love to go! I'd also love to go to Disney Land in Japan, it looks amazing!

BulletWithAName · 09/03/2011 12:04

HeidiKat- So cute! Have you seen the little HK playsets they do on there? I can't wait to buy them for DD at Christmas!

All you Hello Kitty freaks lovers should have a look at this blog here

Lots of things you'll love...

And this one

Clytaemnestra · 09/03/2011 13:22

squeaver - there used to be someone who owned a Hello Kitty porsche who must have lived pretty near where I lived as I saw it a lot. Hot pink porsche 911 with a huge hello kitty face on the bonnet. :)

BulletWithAName - I didn't! As soon as I moved there I failed to do anything remotely touristy (too busy shopping for the most part). I did do Disney Sea though, that was great :)

I quite like it, my daughters have maybe one or two items of Hello Kitty clothing. I have Hello Kitty socks.

DD2 has lots of Peppa Pig clothes. DD1 thinks she's generally a bit grown up (at five and a half) for character clothing.

squeaver · 09/03/2011 14:07

In Japan, you get lots of Kitty Samurai dolls with weapons, guns, knives etc.

The whole thing freaks me out.

HeidiKat · 09/03/2011 14:18

BulletWithAName I know, I love all the kitty stuff they have, I really hope she likes it when she's older I'm dying to get her the roller skates.

mippy · 09/03/2011 16:24

I used to wear it as a teenager when I was going through a riotgrrl/kinderwhore stage - maybe that's why it surprises me that small kids wear the stuff now. I had a Chococat vest top and Little Twin Stars gloves I got from a charity shop in Manchester Grin

There is a huge Sanrio shop in LA. If you want to save money on it, though, don't buy it from Topshop and the like but go to your closest Chinatown.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 09/03/2011 17:00

DD loves it but I hate the whole idea of marketing to kids. So she has some hello kitty hairclips (Santa), a Minnie Mouse hairband (from Nana) and some Dora PJ's (from uncle), so Peppa Pig play toys & books (gifts from rellies).

I do accept that to an extent it's inevitable so I'm not rampaging against it, but I'm not prepared to support/perpetuate/buy it myself, especially not in a preschooler. Probably will have to soften up a little at some point in the future but there are loads of alternative toys/clothes/activities out there that don't involve branding out kids & I'll be pushing for those when possible.

OP have you ever read a MIFFY book?? They are dreadfully written - I took ours to the charity shop as I couldn't bear to read them (though the drawings are quite cute)
