To let ds1 wear what he bloody wants for world book day

mosschops30 · 01/03/2011 19:27

All the years have been given a topic e.g. Cartoon character, film character etc.
Ds1 year is fairy tales.

He will not wear anything I've suggested (Peter pan) he just wants to go as Ben 10 or buzz lightyear.

So Aibu to let him go in what he wants? Why do all these days have to be so stressful, I just can't be arsed with it.
I like to pick my battles with 3 dcs and this just isn't worth it

YANBU.My sons school has said that kids should dress as fairytale characters.Boring.DS wants to go as Burglar Bill, his favourite BOOK CHARACTER and as it's WORLD BOOK DAY he will.

BendyBob · 01/03/2011 19:32

Yadnbu.

Of all the blimmin dressing up days they dream up - and god I've been round the block a few 1000 times wrt dressing up days at school - WBD is the worst.

thisisyesterday · 01/03/2011 19:32

how old is he?

cybilliberty · 01/03/2011 19:32

He coudl go as Mr Forgetful, non?

NotANaturalGeordie · 01/03/2011 19:33

DD1 (6yrs) will be going as Cinderella - its the only dress up costume she has and that's that. I cannot be arsed with making anything else.

Trinaluce · 01/03/2011 19:34

Dictionary definition of fairy tale is : "A fictitious, highly fanciful story or explanation".

I would call both Ben 10 and Toy Story highly fanciful explanations, so go for it Grin

tulpe · 01/03/2011 19:36

YANBU

DS2 wants to go as Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. I am ecstatic as he can wear jeans, tshirt and trainers and not give a stuff about uber competitive parenting types who will have hand-sewn Tarquin's spectacular costume :o

blinder · 01/03/2011 19:36

Yeah let him wear what he wants. Treat the fairy tale thing as a helpful suggestion and ignore it.

What can they do? Send him home?

Hulababy · 01/03/2011 19:36

Let him wear what he wants. Surely those themes are only suggestions anyway.

I agree let him wear what he wants. DD is going as Tinkerbell as she already has the outfit and I can't afford/be bothered to buy/make anything else Grin

pantaloons · 01/03/2011 19:40

We have this, it's not just dress as a book character, it has to be topic related aswell. My youngest has to be a pirate, middle man has to be a character from a "traditional tale" and the eldest dd something to do with castles. Joy!

ragged · 01/03/2011 19:41

What Blinder says.
DS is having anxiety attacks about the whole daft thing (sigh).

pantaloons · 01/03/2011 19:41

Oh and sorry I forgot YANBU!

Rhinestone · 01/03/2011 19:42

YANBU! Let him go as Buzz Lightyear and if teacher says anything then look at her with a puzzled and slightly condescending expression and say, "But didn't you know that Toy Story is a modern reworking of [INSERT NAME OF ANY OLD BROTHERS GRIMM FAIRYTALE].

Then walk off muttering.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 01/03/2011 19:44

Oh AARGH, when is it this year? I'll tell you now that DS is going as either a pirate or a fireman as those are the fancy dress costumes we actually have and I am too skint to buy any new ones.

choccyp1g · 01/03/2011 19:45

Or you could act surprised, "oh I didn't realise Toy Story is non-fiction"

SeeJaneKick · 01/03/2011 19:50

I don't see wyhy people hate it! WHy shouldn't people make an effort and go as a proper book charater.

Can' he be the Woodcutter from red ridnig hood or something?Make him an axe!

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 01/03/2011 19:51

dd went today as a princess she couldn't decide which one she like the most so was a generic princess " As I like them all".

YANBU I would use their ideas as a guide if they participation than the terms should not be too specific. (we have no guidelines here and I'm happy with that!)

unfitmother · 01/03/2011 19:52

YANBU, let him wear what he wants!
This year DDs school said they are to wear pjs. I'm so glad DS has left, he'd never have coped with that.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 01/03/2011 19:52

proof read argggh " if they want participation then their"

corns12k · 01/03/2011 19:54

I hate it. It is okay when they're in the infants and have dressing up outfits anyway which can be adapted but it get silly once they're in the juniors.

mosschops30 · 01/03/2011 19:56

Make him an axe! I've just finished 3 12 hour night shifts, I can't even make a cup never mind an axe Grin

You all make me laugh, think I will trot out the dictionary definition

OP posts:
gallifrey · 01/03/2011 19:56

My daughter wore a dressing up Cinderella dress for world book day and won the prize for the infants!
No idea how that happened, loads of parents had made really good costumes too.

MatureUniStudent · 01/03/2011 19:57

SeeJanePink - you are quite right, it is lovely to see an enthusiastic mother willing to make an effort. I was that mother first time around. By no.4 it was a character that fits a halloween costume or a footballer because I just didn't care. Perhaps when I am a grandparent I might be enthusiastic again, if I have the time. If not, there is always a dressing up shop. (taps side of nose)

I often wondered if the teachers were as tired of WBD as I was. Not only did they have a day of work to get through, they had to do it in a naff costume. Spare me from Belle or Cinderella primary school teachers.
