To let ds1 wear what he bloody wants for world book day

mosschops30 · 01/03/2011 19:27

All the years have been given a topic e.g. Cartoon character, film character etc.
Ds1 year is fairy tales.

He will not wear anything I've suggested (Peter pan) he just wants to go as Ben 10 or buzz lightyear.

So Aibu to let him go in what he wants? Why do all these days have to be so stressful, I just can't be arsed with it.
I like to pick my battles with 3 dcs and this just isn't worth it

Snowisfallingonlee ooh interesting - you have no profile so I can't check where you live but you can have a nosy at mine and see if it rings any bells Wink

I will look out for a James Bond character tomorrow Wink

BonzoDooDah · 02/03/2011 13:35

ragged I don't know where the PM button has gone so can't PM you - but didn't want to hijack the thread. I was a little alarmed that your DS is worried about being laughed at at school for wearing the wrong costume (in only year 2). If this is a regular thing nd not just a one-off then I think I'd be going in and talking to the teacher about this as this sounds like something that they should be talking about and being taught NOT to do. Have a look at the book Bullies, Bigmouths and So-called Friends which deals with not just being bullied but how to deal with friends who mock and belittle you. (sorry if this is an over-reaction)

Piccalilli2 · 02/03/2011 13:36

Dd1 is going as the worst witch as I only found out about it today, I'm at work, and the costume is for tomorrow. She doesn't know it yet, mind, but dh is under strict instructions to assist in persuading her that that is indeed what she wants to go as.

LiegeAndLief · 02/03/2011 13:36

Ds did this yesterday and insisted on going as Mr Toad. Stretched my costume creating skills to the limit. He was very pleased with himself in morning but came home a bit depressed as nobody knew who he was and everyone else was Cinderella/Snow White/Buzz Lightyear/Ben 10 etc.

One of the boys in his class went as a reindeer. Not sure what book he had in mind but clearly was genius move on the part of his mother as he was also a reindeer in the Christmas play.

DS3 is going as Burglar Bill too...tis fab Grin and easy! DS1 (now 17 was Burglar Bill when he was 6 too Grin DS2 is going as Captain Underpants, but as it's blooming cold and Captian Underpants only wears a cape and pants, I have said he needs to wear thermals underneath, so he won't look quite the same, but hey.

Our school theme is a funny character. I think it's the first time they have had a theme tbh. But I think as long as they dress up, the school don't care!

lookbutdonttouch · 02/03/2011 13:46

My DD has ignored the 'book' bit entirely and is going as Helen of Troy...

Well she features in the book of myths we have anyway...

purplefish · 02/03/2011 13:48

We had Jeremy Strong in on Monday...DS2 was VERY excited Grin They both said he was hilarious!

JemimaMop · 02/03/2011 14:04

Bonzo: it is the same in my DC's school. DS2 is in Year 2 and went to school dressed up for St David's Day yesterday. He still wears the traditional costume He chose to wear it rather than a rugby shirt, which a lot of the older boys wear. One boy in his class however told him he looked stupid and really gave him a hard time. It turs out that a couple of the other boys had been going to wear traditional dress but had been scared to do it because of this boy's comments :( I was very proud of DS2 though as he went straight to the teacher and told her what the boy had said rather than lashing out.

The other boy is going to have a field day tomorrow as DS2 is going dressed as a Rotten Roman which is, essentially, a dress Grin DS2 doesn't care though, he loves Romans and wants to wear that, and I am very proud of him!

WishIWasRimaHorton · 02/03/2011 14:07

yes, we had st david's day yesterday and DS went in in welsh knight pyjamas (which i had to buy as he had nothing 'welsh' to wear)

WBD tomorrow sees him as ... Harry Potter (aged 4!!). has cost me zero - apart from two sheets of paper. he is wearing my undergraduate gown (which fits him - yikes!!); i have printed some glasses off the internet and a tie - which he has coloured in. he is taking a toy broom we have as his broomstick; and i have made a wand out of a pencil with a few left-over-from-Christmas silver and gold pipe cleaners stuck to the end.

i would be stuck if they had a 'theme' though!

I think all this effort and money would be far better spent on storytelling sessions, the children just explaining why they love their favourite book, or parents making a book donation to school (even if it's second hand). Not wasting money on outfits.

Rosenotinyorkshire · 02/03/2011 16:20

Have to make or construct a lightening bolt so ds can become percy jackson. I am loathe to put effort in to making something flash that will be either a) left at school or b)crushed as soon as he arrives. Also, I dont really know how to make a lightening bolt! Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 02/03/2011 16:26

lookbutdonttouch -

My DD has ignored the 'book' bit entirely and is going as Helen of Troy...

How is going as a character from The Iliad ignoring books? Grin

JosieMumsnet · 02/03/2011 16:46

We've put together a few ideas for World Book Day ourselves which you can see on this page. We hope it's useful!

stealthsquiggle · 02/03/2011 17:32

What shape is Percy J's lightening bolt? Isn't it in fact a sword Confused?

Tee hee, MNHQ, you have been trawling the archives for that page - I am on there with a posting name I have not used for a long time Grin

vintageteacups · 02/03/2011 17:37

Our school have said they have to be a bible character! DS said last night, when he didn't know what to go as:

"I'm sure Noah had pumpkins on the Arc"

He only has a pumpkin costume Hmm.

DD is now going as an angel and DS doesn't want to dress up so will be making a crown to go as one of the 3 wise men.
The ironic thing is we're atheists Grin

MrsSawyer · 02/03/2011 17:38

my ds is in foundation 2 and has to go in his arsing pyjamas!!! something about bedtime stories Hmm

laughalot · 02/03/2011 18:11

My ds is going as captain underapants easy pair of pants over hs trousers Grin

cedmonds · 02/03/2011 18:12

DS is going as Harry from Harry the Bucket full of dinosaurs. He hates dressing up and was getting really worked up about it.

MrsGravy · 02/03/2011 19:20

4yo DS is going as Rastamouse. It's quite an easy 'costume' actually - a white T shirt and a home made medallion with an R on it, a tail made out of a strip of brown fabric and we've made a Rasta hat out of cardboard (didn't give us enough time to knit one!).

I expect everyone else will be Ben 10 etc - that's what we normally do anyway, I was so surprised by the Rastamouse request I went along with it!

DD is, quite predictably, going as a Disney Princess.

Twit · 02/03/2011 20:04

Another one checking in who hates all the dressing up days.
DS2 (9) is going as Percy Jackson (ie normal clothes) and DD (5) wants to go as Hermione. She wants me to curl her dead straight hair, we will fluff up her hair a bit (it's a jaw length bob), but all in all nothing too bad.

CDMforever · 02/03/2011 20:07

DD is going as Wally from the Where's Wally books.
Dead easy. Red and white striped top, jeans, big black plastic glasses salvaged from the dressing up box and a bobbly hat. And walking stick!
Fantastic!
The other sprogs may not know who he is (Is Where's Wally a bit old hat now?) but who cares! They'll all be in their boring Ben 10/Disney Princess outfits Wink

minxthemanx · 02/03/2011 20:21

My DS has just suggested I post his idea on here: Just William. School cap on crooked, stripy tie all dishevelled, blazer, school shorts etc. Maybe a catapult. I have neither the time nor money, like many of you, to make/buy an outfit so am pleased with thaat suggestion!

FlatulantTrousers · 02/03/2011 20:33

If anyone still has their child's costumes from their nativities then why not just send them in that? They'll be a character from a book; The Bible.

Problem Solved

minxthemanx · 02/03/2011 20:43

Btw, I have to dress up 2 DS AND myself for World Book Day - have sorted ideas for them but have bugger all ideas for me and don't have time and am getting stressed and aargh!
