To let ds1 wear what he bloody wants for world book day

All the years have been given a topic e.g. Cartoon character, film character etc.
Ds1 year is fairy tales.

He will not wear anything I've suggested (Peter pan) he just wants to go as Ben 10 or buzz lightyear.

So Aibu to let him go in what he wants? Why do all these days have to be so stressful, I just can't be arsed with it.
I like to pick my battles with 3 dcs and this just isn't worth it

It sounds so simple doesn't it when you say it like that? Woodcutter/axe. Simple. If only.

But in my experience (and for many years I've had to come up with 3 outfits each time) what you suggest and what is do-able isn't what the dc have in mind, no sir not at all.

They start with an idea that'd tax the BBC drama wardrobe Dept and it's all onward from there.

Oooh - dexifehatz - DS1 is going as Burglar Bill. So glad our school isn't prescriptive.

Blatherskite · 01/03/2011 20:05

It's my DS's first ever World Book Day this year. I've bought him an outfit but am getting a little worried that he's just going to flatly refuse to wear it Sad

I did consider making one but they were £10 on Ebay so I saved myself the heartache of spending hours making something he'll never wear and spent 5 minutes ordering it instead.

He's possibly going to be a Gingerbread man.

ragged · 01/03/2011 20:05

DS2 is very anxious because he is afraid of wearing the wrong thing, if he chooses the wrong character he will get teased about it (he is only yr2, btw :(). I am having to work hard to keep him from getting worried about it.

But I also am anxious in case his choice (Tintin) gets laughed at.

I further hate WBD because I am lousy at thinking up and making costumes.

Two years ago DS1 went as Hiccup Horrendous. I made a little cardboard dragon and Viking hat for him, we copied the outfit off one of the book covers. That was a massive creative effort on my part (am not naturally creative) .... but at school nobody knew who HH was (sigh).

Actually, DD (y4) is fine & complete confident about it; she is going as Hetty Feather. Very handy as her class did Victorians all last term so she already has a perfect costume to wear.

PigValentine · 01/03/2011 20:05

My DS's reception class has been instructed to dress as a Mr Man or Little Miss character.

For months I have seen Mr Men outfits / clothing / associated paraphernalia everywhere I go. This week I spent 4 hours in town hunting, as it has all disappeared off the face of the earth. Finally found a Mr Happy t-shirt in M&S and DH and I destroyed the rack looking for his size. All the time, I was wondering why I was bothering - DS1 wants to go as Spiderman, who he claims is a Mar Man because he has "man" in his name.

YANBU

SilveryMoon · 01/03/2011 20:05

We got a letter home today saying my ds1 (3.5yrs) has to dress up as a nursery rhyme character.

I'm thinking of getting a spider outfit from Tesco and he can go as incy-wincy???

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/03/2011 20:08

Our infant school for the last 3 years has had a brilliant solution to solve all problems.

They go in their PJ's and take their favourite bedtime story with them Grin

purplepidjin · 01/03/2011 20:38

Can you compromise on a character from Shrek?

androbbob · 01/03/2011 21:05

World Book Day - what is the point about dressing up as a character from a book - lacks imagination by school if you ask me.

I am fortunate that through 5 years of school we have never had to bother with this rubbish. The school do mark WBD by asking the children to bring in their favourite book and then spend a portion of the day either reading the book or when they got older - discussing the book with their class. far more interesting if you ask me.

Dressing up is ok in nursery.

They do have special days - last year was victorian outfit and they then went to a local old house and 'worked' as servants, dairy maids, footmen, etc as part of the learning about that period. This year is Egypt and they have to dress up as an Egyptian and later that week are going to the World Museum who have a floor for Egyptian stuff.

I've got another thread on this. Competitive costume making can't be done at 2 days notice. Have noticed ASDA are now selling WBD costumes. It's another way to extract money out of people.

Honestly, send them in what they want to wear. "Character from a book" can be very loosely interpreted - we have a Toy Story book on our shelf, and a Ben 10 annual.

DaisyDaresYOU · 01/03/2011 21:46

I wish they'd tell you a few weeks in advance.Only got letter yesterday. So have to go out and find a costume tomoz. Not always easy when moneys tight. My ds has to dress as something from a dick smith king book.Any ideas?

Kathsmum · 01/03/2011 21:56

Kathsmum · 01/03/2011 21:59

What about pjs & wellies - paddington bear

muddyangels123 · 01/03/2011 22:03

My DD is going as a victorian girl from a J Wilson book.

BiscuitsandBaileys · 01/03/2011 22:08

Sorry to hijack but can anyone help me? DD1 is in yr6 and has to dress as a hero or heroine. I have no ideas at all! She has no ideas and would rather not bother tbh.
Op yanbu!

mamasmissionimpossible · 01/03/2011 22:09

My ds (5) wants to go as Rudolph the red rose reindeer :o

I found some brown clothes, antlers and a red nose, plus a book about christmas with reindeer. (bobs your uncle!)

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 01/03/2011 22:14

DS2's nursery is doing WBD. He's 2.5.

He wants to go as a Christmas pudding, so Christmas pudding it will be (we've got a tabard style dressing up outfit from Christmas!)

SeeJaneKick · 01/03/2011 22:14

OOoh....ok....well now...female hero's include.

Florence Nightingale long dress and apron...rig up a nurses hat out of white cotton give her a garden lamp to hold

Or for mre glamour send her as cat woman...black cat outfit basically...she's a heroine...just a comc book one...and you can bet yur bottom dollar there'll be a couple of wonder womans.

SeeJaneKick · 01/03/2011 22:15

DaisyDares...what about a snail? There's "Sophies Snail" by Dic King Smith isn't there...not hard but not easy if you're not crafty.

BiscuitsandBaileys · 01/03/2011 22:22

Thanks seejanekick, I like the cat woman one!

MrsRhettButler · 01/03/2011 22:25

umm, when IS WBD? i've heard nothing yet, dd is in reception.... does this mean that her school don't do WBD then if i haven't heard yet?

MrsRhettButler · 01/03/2011 22:26
beanandspud · 01/03/2011 22:31

I hate these dressing up days so YADNBU.

DS declared that he was going as himself so I am seriously considering sending him with a made-up book with his pic on the front. Strangely it feels like less hassle than forcing him to dress up.

megapixels · 01/03/2011 22:31

Easy one for a boy is to go as Charlie Bucket. Just wear clothes that are too big and have a golden ticket in hand.

BiscuitsandBaileys · 01/03/2011 22:32

mrs rhettbutler you maybe one of the lucky ones whose dc's school doesn't do anything for wbd!
Dd1 is in junior school- see my above post- but dd2 is in the infant paired with dd1's and they don't do anything thank goodness Grin
