To let ds1 wear what he bloody wants for world book day

mosschops30 · 01/03/2011 19:27

All the years have been given a topic e.g. Cartoon character, film character etc.
Ds1 year is fairy tales.

He will not wear anything I've suggested (Peter pan) he just wants to go as Ben 10 or buzz lightyear.

So Aibu to let him go in what he wants? Why do all these days have to be so stressful, I just can't be arsed with it.
I like to pick my battles with 3 dcs and this just isn't worth it

DD is going as Fancy Nancy. It is by no means her favourite book or character but she wants to wear flouncy clothes and necklaces. Fine

DS is going as Horrid Henry which basically means he doesn't have to wash his face in the morning Hmm

CDMforever · 02/03/2011 20:47

Minx, have a gander at the ideas on MN.
Some brill ideas that won't take long at all to throw together.Good Luck!

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 02/03/2011 20:58

i am rapidly going over to the Harry and the Bucketful of dinosaurs for 4 and half year old ds. He does like the books, so it would be normal clothes, a bucket and some toy dinosaurs ... think even i can manage to rustle that up in the morning!

CointreauVersial · 02/03/2011 21:02

Nightmare - I hate WBD, especially with three of them!

DS1 was originally planning to be Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid (i.e. not dressed up at all), but he's now quite tempted by the idea of being Captain Underpants, wearing his loudest pants over the top of his trousers.

DD1 is going as Puss in Boots, wearing cat ears/make-up and an old pair of my boots.

DD2 is going as the White Witch from Narnia - all in white with a crown, a silver foil wand and frosty make-up.

Sorted....

SingingSands · 02/03/2011 21:10

I had a fab idea for DD - she will be "Sophie" from Roald Dahl's "The BFG". Basically she will pitch up at school still in her nightie. Ta dah!

purplefish · 02/03/2011 21:10

DS3 very nearly went as Horrid henry and said he would have to be like him all day. I said that he wouldn't have to practise much Hmm

Ooh yes, and Jeremy Strong. I met him and spoke to him The boys had their books signed.

I am very annoyed.. Having sorted out a Dorothy costume for dd and Harry potter for ds, both of them brimming with excitement for weeks, today the school says everyone to come in their pyjamas. FFS, what's that got to do with WBD?

purplefish · 02/03/2011 21:27

He is a very lovely man. DS2 (aged 8) said 'he's a lot older than I thought he'd be'.......out of earshot, thankfully Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 02/03/2011 21:30

Crazy, well, I suppose most book reading happens when kids are in pyjamas so its not totally weird.

But v annoying if you've done proper cossies!

My mother was always so sour about dressing up requirements when I was a child, it made me nervous about telling her. It spoiled the whole shebang for me, even though I loved the idea of dressing up. Consequently, my dd gets full and enthusiastic participation from me. It doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. This year she's going as Pippi Longstocking. Stripey socks, bright skirt, stripey top, plaits with florists wire wrapped round to make them stick out, and eye liner freckles. Cost zero as we adapted stuff she already had. We had fun getting it all together and she's really looking forward to seeing what all her friends will be wearing. I don't think it's unreasonable to let your son go as Ben 10, but I do think it's unreasonable not to make any effort at all. Being on the receiving end of 'can't be arsed' sucks.

igetmorelovefromthecat · 02/03/2011 22:08

I am Smuggy McSmugSmug as I have actually, for the first time, put some thought and effort into DD1's costume. Previously I have tended to forget about it until the last minute at which point she will get dressed in whatever fits her in the dressing up box.

However, this year (she is Yr 2), she is going as Pippi Longstocking.

I have got her:
a patchwork dress from ebay
a ginger wig with plaits that can stick up
one brown stocking, one black stocking (as Pippi herself wore according to the book)
black lace up shoes
eyebrow pencil to do freckles on her nose
and the piece d'resistance - my toy monkey AKA "Bankee" who was my favourite when I was little, and who is perfect shoulder sized. I have lovingly sewn this onto the shoulder of her dress.

Feeling rather proud of myself.

PeeringIntoTheWintryVoid · 02/03/2011 22:08

I tried to coerce DD into being a witch or wizardess (so we can use her halloween costume), but she wouldn't have it. She tried to coerce me into making her into a beastquest monster. We finally compromised on a ninja, as she says she read a book about them once.Grin

By some miracle I managed to buy a black polo neck in her size today (in the sale too!), then used a long sleeved black tshirt to make the head dress. Some black face paint eyeliner, black tracksuit bottoms, her karate red belt, a sword and dagger, and we're set. She looked great this afternoon when she tried it on. The book connection is a bit tenuous, but I'm relieved we've cobbled something together in time. Wink

DD is so excited about tomorrow, btw, that she couldn't keep still. I had a hell of a job getting her to go to bed. Grin

I am feeling very thankful that DS only has to take his favourite book into preschool tomorrow.

PeeringIntoTheWintryVoid · 02/03/2011 22:20

Auntie that's amazing!! Well done you - there's no way I'd let DD get away with not wearing that tomorrow after you've put all that effort in!

mitochondria · 02/03/2011 22:23

I want one of those Totoro costumes. I may go as him next year!

AuntieBulgaria · 02/03/2011 22:24

Thanks Peering, Grin.

She's lucky, as before we found the gilet, at first it was looking likely I would try and make it out of a (new) furry pedestal bog mat - also £4 at primark.

wonka · 02/03/2011 22:29

dungarees and a t-shirt = Jack and the bean stalk

wonka · 02/03/2011 22:31

My DS1 was wally (where's wally)

morfamawddach · 02/03/2011 22:32

Bog mat Totoro! Lol Grin

missmakesstuff · 02/03/2011 22:36

Well I have just finished my costume - our school do it for y7 - they pretty much all get into it, but have given the classes sections of the alphabet to choose their characters from, to stop them all coming as Ben 10 I guess Grin.

I am going as the queen of hearts...red shoes, big white sheet and red bits of material tucked into some elastic round my waist, DH'd shirt under a bustier top, with hearts stuck on it cut from cardboard. Oh, and made a crown and scepter out of cardboard. Painting my face white with blue eyes and a red mouth like Helena Bonham Carter. Now just have to drive to work like that and teach art all day dressed like a loon.

Took me two evenings to make mine, luckily DD is 11 months so have a while till I have to worry about her costume! Spare a thought for us teachers though, we have to bloody dress up too!

gilmoregirl · 02/03/2011 22:41

I love the nativity costume - character in the bible usggestion - am so going for that next year as I did manage to make a shepherd costume as had plenty of notice - not the two days given this time.

DS is going as Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs:
normal clothes - large bucket containing toy dinosaurs Grin

To be fair the bucket is so big and we only have a few toy dinosaurs so it is not exactly a "bucketful" but tough
