To let ds1 wear what he bloody wants for world book day

mosschops30 · 01/03/2011 19:27

All the years have been given a topic e.g. Cartoon character, film character etc.
Ds1 year is fairy tales.

He will not wear anything I've suggested (Peter pan) he just wants to go as Ben 10 or buzz lightyear.

So Aibu to let him go in what he wants? Why do all these days have to be so stressful, I just can't be arsed with it.
I like to pick my battles with 3 dcs and this just isn't worth it

I hate it too.
I loathed it when my dcs had to dress up.
I loathe it even more when I have to...
:(

Or do George's Marvellous Nedicine - normal clothes, take a small bottle with you, fill with a weird mixture if you feel like it.

gorionine · 02/03/2011 07:17

When they did world book day a few years back Dd1 and Ds2 made their own costumes with a bit of help and some cardboard. Dd went as a card from Alice in wonderland and DS went as the Enourmous Crocodile from Roald Dahl. They had fun doing it but then started to feel very self concious arriving to school and realising they were the only ones in home made costume. DD got chosen to have her picture on the local paper and Ds got chosen to give flowers to
the Mayoress.

They were just a bit exited when they came back!Smile

mrsgetonwithit · 02/03/2011 07:25

Any dress up up day school my son goes in jeans a shirt, dressing up is sad he says.............Phew!

manchestermummy · 02/03/2011 07:25

YANBU. DD1 will be going in her skeleton outfit. Thankfully we have a copy of Funnybones at home.Grin

DoingTheBestICan · 02/03/2011 07:27

My Ds is going as Charlie Bucket,i have bought some cheap baby gros from a charity shop yesterday & spent last night cutting them up into patches & i have stitched them onto an old pair of trousers & top, then i have wrapped a piece of card with gold wrapping paper.

That'll do as last yr everyone else turned up in football costumes & disney dresses.

throckenholt · 02/03/2011 07:51

It is stuff like this that I happily ignore now we HE our kids :). Although to be honest we fairly well happily ignored it when they were at school as well.

I always felt that it was a chore for the parents much more often than it was fun for the kids. And most people just went and bought a costume - which takes no creativity at all.

Someone earlier mentioned a woodcutter and making an axe - my boys did that last year - made an axe out of wood, cardboard and gaffer tape. It started a craze at school which I don't think the school or the other parents were entirely happy with Grin. Serves the school right for following the herd and having WBD anyway !

IAPJJLPJ · 02/03/2011 08:04

mosschops30 - ben 10 and toy story are also available in book form anyway. I would let him dress in what he wants and for him to take the book to school to present to the teacher if she says it is not "book related"

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/03/2011 08:13

DaisyDaresYou -- put DC in sensible outdoor gear + wellies and they can be farmer from The Sheep-Pig. Total cost probably zero.

Chandon · 02/03/2011 08:13

my boys (6 ans 9)will just go as boys, they HATE dressing up, and I am blimming well not going through the trouble of organising costumes that they then do not want to wear!

so we are on strike this year.

not all kids like dressing up.

it makes me feel unreasonably cross, the assumption we parents (mums mainly) have nothing better to do.Angry

ErnestTheBavarian · 02/03/2011 08:16

I'd let him go as buzz or Ben 10. What are the school going to do, shoot him?

Numberfour · 02/03/2011 08:33

Chandon, my 6 yr old son also hates dressing up, though he has announced he wants to dress up as the Cat in the Hat. We have some face paint so I could do that whiskers, but he has a bloody dental appointment at 9.30 so I will have to do his face after. And I childmind which means I will have other kids with me.

I REALLY appreciate the effort that the teachers put into DS's school (got slated last year on MN for moaning about WBD!) but the dressing up thing really is a stress for me and DS................. Sad

Ephiny · 02/03/2011 08:49

I'd let him wear whatever he wants, including just normal clothes if he prefers - seriously what are they going to do, send him home? Hmm

I remember when World Book Day was actually about reading books!

DaisyDaresYOU · 02/03/2011 08:57

I remember when my I made ds a sheep costume and everyone else had bought theirs.Had to phone around last minute to find one.So i'm sticking to bought from now on.

DaisyDaresYOU · 02/03/2011 09:00

Pflimls oops didn't see your message.Ds has no wellies they're too small.

Blatherskite · 02/03/2011 09:16

Well, I think you're all grumps. I loved this sort of thing when I was at school and am looking forward to DS and DD enjoying it too.

But then, I got the note telling me about WBD before half term so I've had about a fortnight to get an outfit. I love DS's Pre School :)

sheepgomeep · 02/03/2011 09:35

I hate world book day. great for parents who can afford to buy/make stuff, not so great for those who can't

buying 3 outfits amounts to over 30 quid

Nah.

my eldest two (juniors) think its silly anyway

Tiredmumno1 · 02/03/2011 09:35

Manchestermummy thats what my ds went as, his favourite book was actually funny bones though Grin

Wikileeks · 02/03/2011 09:39

My girls were regular clothes and trot out some fib about being Tracy Beakers friend who lives around the corner... they love reading but don't actually give a stuff about dressing up as some creature/person from a book...let him do as he pleases :D

Wikileeks · 02/03/2011 09:39

wear !! not were ^^

steph28uk · 02/03/2011 09:53

my son whos 5 wants to go as a star wars character! i dontk know though if this would be allowed?? Ive tried to get him to change and be transformed into something else but he's not having it.

Chandon · 02/03/2011 09:56

number4, my DS1 went as cat in the hat two years ago! I drew him a simple mask (copied from the book's cover)and added some rubber bands so it would stay put.

I also spent a who evening making the crazy hat out of paper Grin, which he then didn't want to wear.

I OBJECT to buying costumes really, what a waste of money and what do you do with the stupid costume afterwards...

Would it not be better to spend the money on BOOKS people?????!!!!!!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 02/03/2011 10:32

Steph28uk, my son went as Rex from clone wars, and had a lovely starwarsy conversation with his teacher who is also a fan! Just let him wear it, what can they do?

ragged · 02/03/2011 10:36

There are Star Wars comics. Aimed at age 8-12, I guess. Anyway, all the usual characters in there, so can't see how the school can object.
