I flashed my headlights at someone today and then gave them the finger

fucking witch wouldn't let me pull out from parking into a slow-moving queue at traffic lights

seriously made a point of speeding up until she was level with me

The person behind her did though

so I flashed and gave her the finger

she deserved it - it was such purposeful bad manners / etiquette whatever you call it

AIBU?

no it's a lane where you can park during certain times if you wish to - but other times it's a normal lane

yes I appreciate that my yobbish roots came to the fore but dang it made me feel good

Euphemia thanks. DH has since said that even if indicators are flashing all it means it that they are working! You do need to check all sorts. I wish I had done this as a fresh teenager rather than a knackered parent of a child with S.N Sad

HecateQueenOfWitches · 24/02/2011 18:15

Oh you NEVER assume that anyone's indicators mean anything!

Always wait and see them start to turn (or not)

I find the best way to stay safe on the road is to assume that everyone else is a) very stupid and b) consciously TRYING to kill me.

NotSoPukeyMummy · 24/02/2011 18:18

Indicators...the clue is in the name: "indicators".

They indicate that the driver may do something soon.

Or, equally, they may not. Grin

ChasingSquirrels · 24/02/2011 18:19

ah, I see.
Well, sounds like she was being petty in speeding up so that you couldn't pull out.
And you were being unreasonably in flashing and giving her the finger - aggressive and uncalled for.

RustyBear · 24/02/2011 18:19

Are you sure she was speeding up just to spite you? She may not even have seen you were moving out and just speeded sped gone faster in the hope of getting to the traffic lights before they changed.

In which case it might still have been bad driving if she wasn't aware of you when she should have been, but it wouldn't have been malicious.

NoSuchThingAsSociety · 24/02/2011 18:23

OP - how vile (of you).

GORGEOUSX · 24/02/2011 18:23

activate YABU. She should have let you out, yes, agreed - out of common courtesy - but she didn't. That doesn't give you the right to be so rude to her, IMO.

I can't abide aggressive drivers, or road-rage mentality, which you clearly have.

activate · 24/02/2011 18:26

in 23 years of driving this is the first time I have ever got this cross

Hecate, When I used to cycle in Bristol I always made this assumption.
Was right about 50% of the time.:o

GORGEOUSX · 24/02/2011 18:28

OP Good, then you are not a road-rager - apologies. I just can't stand it when people get aggressive behind the wheel of a carGrin

nancydrewfoundaclue · 24/02/2011 18:30

I also adopt the cheery wave and big grin approach in these circumstance.

Speeding up to deliberately prevent someone joining slow moving traffic is just rude. It's like those people who, as you approach a till or cashpoint, come from behind and do that weird half jog to ensure they get there first.

Fucking freaks Grin

TyraG · 24/02/2011 18:31

Lucky you weren't in the States. That could get you run off the road and/or shot.

5inthebed · 24/02/2011 18:32

YABU to stick your fingers up. I'd have applauded her instead.

Usually use that when idiots overtake me while I'm doing the speedlimit, only to get one car ahead of me and stopped at traffic lights.

OTheHugeManatee · 24/02/2011 18:32

What make of car were you driving?

I base decisions on whether to let people out mostly on the make and model of car. Tell me about your car, and I'll tell you if she was justified in blocking you. Grin

OnEdge · 24/02/2011 18:33

Na fuck her, she deserved it !

activate · 24/02/2011 18:33

She was in a 4WD

feels the tide of opinion change Grin

OP posts:
nancydrewfoundaclue · 24/02/2011 18:34

tyrag where I live it'll get you 3mths in prison Shock

OTheHugeManatee · 24/02/2011 18:35

Yes, but what were you driving?

beatenbyayellowteacup · 24/02/2011 18:39

You obviously haven't driven in Sydney

In fact, what colour is your car? I tend to make decisions based on that too Wink

ivykaty44 · 24/02/2011 18:39

thumb on nose and wiggle fingers -much more effective than just one finger

Boohooyou · 24/02/2011 18:40

Jeez are we on netmums or something?
Of course YANBU

She was selfish to not let you in and a witch to drive faster to not let you in.

I would've done the same, quite enjoy a bit of road rage.
Letting off a bit of steam is good for you !

Youllskimmer · 24/02/2011 18:40

OP if you want people on your side try posting the following.

The other driver was:

Smoking, with children in the car.
Talking on her mobile.
Eating a Gregg's sausage roll
Drinking a fruit shoot. All at the same time.
Throwing rubbish out of the window.
There was a bottle of formula on the dashboard.
The children in the car had their ears pierced.

Give that a go.

Tiredmumno1 · 24/02/2011 18:44

Maybe she is sick of ignorant drivers not saying thanks, so she decided not to be nice in case you did not thank her, i dont think it warranted you swearing at her, i have heard worse stories, so yabu, sorry

scottishmummy · 24/02/2011 18:46
