I'll maybe wait until DD2 is 18 and has left for prison university. DD1 will have left long before that for the convent.

AIBU to shop around for my yacht now?

Sounds tempting! I'd rather have a tiny cottage by the sea than a yacht, but I know what you mean!

RunAwayWife · 23/02/2011 18:06

AYC I think we need a bigger boat....

/packs bag and climbs aboard

southeastastra · 23/02/2011 18:07

you might be taken hostage by pirate - even the high seas are no escape now

southeastastra · 23/02/2011 18:07

(just the one pirate)

TheMonster · 23/02/2011 18:08

Count me in.

RunAwayWife · 23/02/2011 18:08

Ay Jim lad

Tolalola · 23/02/2011 18:09

Depends.

Let's see the boat Grin.

RunAwayWife · 23/02/2011 18:10

DPs parents have a boat 30foot 6 birth....
climb abord

Tolalola · 23/02/2011 18:32

Oooh we've got a 26ft 4 berth - maybe we could make a flotilla?

TeacupTempest · 23/02/2011 18:33

I live on a yacht; sat here in the cabin right now!

Do it!

AtYourCervix · 23/02/2011 18:40

i don't want 4 berths. the DDs would want to come (much as I love em I have Had Enough).

I want one large luxurious berth just for me. and sunshine.

nikki1978 · 23/02/2011 18:42

Nah I get too seasick. I would like to pack a bag and travel the world for several years though :)

Tolalola · 23/02/2011 18:46

Right then. I think you want something like this

Extra cabins can be for the crew. After all, you'll need a dedicated cocktail waiter.

RIZZ0 · 23/02/2011 18:46

Ooh nice idea. Could this fantasy ship be captained by (actually, screw that, you're the captain) a fantasy deckhand ? Eric Northman from True Blood or Sawyer from Lost perhaps?

upahill · 23/02/2011 18:53

I have quite a few friends that have done this over the years. Well not a yacht but a barge.

Must admit it's not for me!

Antidote · 23/02/2011 18:56

Been there, got the sunburn, been shit scared in a massive storm off north Africa.

We had a 9 month boat based adventure before we got married. It was excellent but a very small boat. As in two berth, each smaller than a single bed. But hey, it was worth every second.

Do it. But get a boat with a proper toilet, not a hole in the bridgedeck aka 'the bidet of the deep'

agedknees · 23/02/2011 18:58

We sold our house, bought a flat and a 24ft 4 berth GRP cruiser.

The owl and the pussycat went to sea(well ok, went up the canal).

schroeder · 23/02/2011 19:06

Can I come? I sailed a bit when I was a teenager and have never slept as well since.

NinkyNonker · 23/02/2011 19:11

Yanbu. DH and I have just sold his our little classic yacht to find other things, but are seriously contemplating taking a 'sabbatical' or career break in 5 yrs or so and taking however many children we have at the time off for around a year. DH has sailed in most parts of the world, I've only done the Med and the UK, but we both fancy a bit of an explore.

Seriously contemplated buying a liveaboard last yr, we bottled it at the last minute but I expect we will one day.

RunAwayWife · 23/02/2011 20:15

I think a flotilla is a great idea.
Now cervix stop being selfish if you wanted to go it alone you should not have posted here where you knew we would all want to go with you, so there.

If any children try to join us we shall make them walk the plank!

AtYourCervix · 23/02/2011 20:24

you can come as long as you are very quiet, do not ask questions and keep the fridge stocked. i'm going to need a crew of quiet, hunky deckhands. my back is far too knackered to splice anything bigger than a lime.

it is something about this time of year. i get itchy feet. i never had a gap year or went travelling (damn you contraception!)

I will bring champagne and chocolate and promise never to sing.

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/02/2011 20:46

Can I come too? I live behind a canal so you can moor your boat here until you are all packed up.

Will provide wine and chocolate, copious amounts of both!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 23/02/2011 20:47

go for it.
if you are having it built it may take a few years, so better get on with it now.

RunAwayWife · 23/02/2011 20:57

Right sign up for the great mumsnet getaway
