I'll maybe wait until DD2 is 18 and has left for prison university. DD1 will have left long before that for the convent.

AIBU to shop around for my yacht now?

I'm in. I love a bit of boat porn.

Antidote · 24/02/2011 04:57

who is in?

AlpinePony · 24/02/2011 05:57

When I was a child, each year we'd be dragged go to the Earl's Court boat show. It'd be a family outing so that my mother could stop my father whipping out his chequebook and "doing something stupid". One year they lost my sister there - to this day I'm not sure it was an accident.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/02/2011 10:22

oh I loved the Earls Court boat show.
my dad impulse-bought a few boats in his time.
(natty folding dinghies mainly, not massive yachts.)

DH used to have one of these - it's why I married him actually.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/02/2011 10:25

not really (in case he sees this) but it helped.

Quenelle · 24/02/2011 10:28

My friends' neighbour has been building a yacht in their back garden for 15 years. They expect to finish it this year and will have to demolish their garage and get the road closed to remove it.

How's that for a long-term escape plan?

CaptainNancy · 24/02/2011 10:33

I think I need to be on this thread...

Have wanderlust badly atm.

Hullygully · 24/02/2011 10:39

do it. do it. do it.

rah rah rah.

I have a boat. But it is very small. It's good for going out to sea and jumping from. Slightly harder to get back aboard.

IreneHeron · 24/02/2011 10:40

My aunt did this at the age of about 75 yrs old. She sold all her stuff and bought a small boat with the intention of sailing it through the canals of europe to the Black Sea.

Hullygully · 24/02/2011 10:41

Irene, how fab. Did she do it?

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/02/2011 10:47

my favourite story was the woman who was pissed off when her dad sailed to America without her in the 1930s and wouldn't take her because she was too young.
So in her 80s she bought the boat back and sailed it to America by herself.

(what was her name, was it Helen something?)

Hullygully · 24/02/2011 10:48

There's hope for us all

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/02/2011 10:53

Helen Tew

oh look CaptainNancy, she was vice president of your trust!

notjustapotforsoup · 24/02/2011 10:54

Helen Tew, sethstarkaddersmackerel Here

My parents have sort of done this. They spend half the year on the boat, half at home. Spent 3 years in the Med, then Dad, bro and I took her over to the Caribbean last month. Mum isn't settling very well, though.

CaptainNancy · 24/02/2011 11:20
Grin

I am fancying a peter duck myself...

Tolalola · 24/02/2011 11:54

Ooh where in the Caribbean, notjustapotforsoup? I am in BVI.

notjustapotforsoup · 24/02/2011 12:04

I think they are in the Tobago Cays. They are a bit lax with updating.

ohboob · 24/02/2011 12:19

I know a couple who did this for 10 years. Had a great time but kind of lost their minds due to all the pot they smoked. They are currently residing on a remote island off New Zealand on high ground so that they survive the end of the world in 2012. I kid you not.
They are lovely but batshit insane. Don't go there. It's a slippery slope.

Ps did the osteo help your back?? What's the verdict?

Portofino · 24/02/2011 12:54

Yacht porn here

I have spent a couple of holidays in St Tropez drooling over the boats in the harbour and moored off Pampelonne beach.

Portofino · 24/02/2011 12:56

though I like this one better

trinitybleu · 24/02/2011 19:14

I'm in - 28 foot, 4 berth, proper toilet ... 1 berth spare if anyone wants it? Grin

maltesers · 24/02/2011 19:18

Whynot ??
You only live once !!

Portofino · 24/02/2011 20:12

You're no-one til you have a big enough boat to squeeze in a helicopter landing pad though Grin

If every MNer stuck in 10 quid, I bet we could buy one! "The MoonCup" perhaps.....launched by LeQueen....

SmashingNarcissistsMirrors · 24/02/2011 20:43

i have a 22fter. more for pottering weekends than serious adventures but still a lot of fun. needs its bottom cleaning and other boring stuff at the moment. i'd like to do an ocean adventure sometime in the future. not in the 22fter though.

Tolalola · 24/02/2011 20:59

Like it that there's a little, secret sailing community on MN Smile.

Anyone sailing in the British Virgin Islands, please look me up!
