i just think the sooner my family get out of this country the better. Its ridiculous. Human rights has gone mad . The prison system is ludicrous! The immigration laws are a joke. Britain has lost almost all the values we used to stand for. Where i live british people are a minority/ stranger in our own country its unbelieveable that it has got to this point. The 'democracy' we live in is far to leanient. I am disgusted that we allow such things as the burkha here i believe that like france, Britain should ban it. So much money is being spent to enable life to be better for those who come here and claim our benefits, translators etc and running the NHS into the ground.... aibu to wonder WHAT ABOUT US BRITS????

I agree with OP- this country is going to the dogs if somebody with her level of literacy can be awarded two degrees. Or did she gain them in a 'forin' institution?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 15:25

" It is incumbent on UK residents to learn the local language."

WEll yes - but it's a real shame that British Expats can't practice what they preach when they emmigrate to other countries Hmm.

And just because someone needs a translator doesn't mean that they're not already making an effort to learn English.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/02/2011 15:30

The OP will be delighted to hear that there have been very severe cuts to the translation services offered by the government for people in hospitals or those who have been arrested. Translators are poorly paid, often freelance and expected to work all hours.

I agree with CocoaChannel. Struggle to see how someone with those literacy levels would have coped with a degree.

I'm feeling very put out that the OP hasn't bothered to answer any of my questions.

I read an interesting article some time ago from members of one community...possibly Bangladeshi/ Urdu..I'm not sure. Anyway, they were saying that although they are grateful that councils etc put translations on the back of their pamphlets, they were suggesting that they see less of this because they wanted the incentive to have to go and improve their English. By having it translated for them they felt it may be hindering their progess and making them a bit lazy.

Other countries amaze me with their language skills. If I decided to go and live in a non english speaking country, I'd be up sh1t creek without a paddle !!!

AbsDuCroissant · 23/02/2011 16:13

"THEY HAVE BROKEN THE LAW! THEY DON'T DESERVE THE SAME HUMAN RIGHTS AS THE LAW OBIDING RESPECTFUL CITIZENS! but hey thats just my ridiculous opinion!"

Yes, that is actually quite a ridiculous opinion.

Yes monkey but then don;t they just ehad for the UKIP thread

BYW which dogs get the country? Becuase if it is nice Schnauzer or Burmese Mountain then I am in- snappy Yorkie or Westie then I must regretfully decline.

Could it go to the hogs instead? DS likes pigs, it would make his day.

AbsDuCroissant · 23/02/2011 16:22

What are law obiding citizens anyway?

I love how only British customs are going to be allowed by mamaLou. So, for a start BAN FISH AND CHIPS. The first fish and chip shop opened in the East End was run by Jewish immigrants - fried fish is a traditional Jewish dish, and the chips were from Irish immigrants.
You'd also have to chop out about a 1/3 of words in the English language, if not more (never fear! mamalou makes her own up!), as they have foreign origins, like sugar, pajamas, jodhpurs, veranda, any word with Latin or Greek, or French or Russian origins (so no bistros then), maybe keep German as it's vaguely in the same language group.

Well, I think we can conclude that neither of the OP's "qualifacations" are in:

  • History
  • Law
  • English
  • Linguistics

My money's on something like a BA in "incoherent ranting for DM readers" BSC in "bugger back to your own country you dirty scoundrels"
