christian lady has written a book claiming jesus can cure homosexuality

I'm not getting into the debate of wether there is a God/Jesus etc. It just this has really mad me angry, how can you cure something that is NOT an illness. I find this extremely insulting and judgemental.

Oi! Get a room, you two!

GrimmaTheNome · 23/02/2011 15:12

In fact, I have heard it argued that homosexuality is a genetic 'error' because animals are programmed to be attracted to the opposite sex since we are programmed to reproduce.

I don't know.

Here is a discussion which may be of interest.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 23/02/2011 15:13

Thank you grimma. That is very interesting reading.

This is a good resource when you want to have a debate with the Xians about what the "Good Book" (sic) actually says on issues.

EG: the bible doesn't have anything much to say about abortion either despite there being clear evidence it was practised at the period.

lesley33 · 23/02/2011 15:17

I watched the tv programme about being gay in Ugunda and the terrible treatment they get including "corrective" rape; being beaten up and killed. Surely nobody would choose to risk this kind of treatment?

lesley33 · 23/02/2011 15:19

Also lots of species of animals have same sex relationships or behaviour e.g. penguins, cows, dogs, etc.

chipmonkey · 23/02/2011 15:22

Well, there you go! If MN can make Rhinestone fancy women, surely all any gay man has to do is register with MN and BAM! he's straight!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 23/02/2011 15:23

ah but in real life, I'm a hairy handed trucker called Dave...

Clockface · 23/02/2011 15:27

I doubt very much if this book will be remembered in two years, even in Worcester Wink Although I did laugh at the enticing blurb; 'a powerful story involving adventurous sport, compassion and redemption.'

However...it does make me Angry because it gives the impression that all Christians are bonkers sex-obsessed homophobes (which I'm not although am v. proud to be Christian). I guess sane faith doesn't make the headlines.

And no, speaking as someone who's just about finishing a degree in biblical theology, Jesus never mentions homosexuality, because back then the concept of sexual orientation didn't exist (or doesn't feature in the Bible anyway) - what did matter were sexual acts, and Jesus doesn't say anything about homosexual acts either. St Paul does, but that's a different story...

serin · 23/02/2011 15:33

Oh very interesting Clockface.

IMVHO if Jesus ain't condemning, who is St Paul to start?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/02/2011 15:34

I can't wait for the film version myself: Brokeback Sh Rafting with Tom Cruise and John Travolta Sir Ian McKellen and Alan Cumming as Ryan and Tony.

serin · 23/02/2011 15:37

Ah yes, Worcester!

There are wonderful bookshops in (for instance).
Manchester and Brighton!

I wonder why she picked Worcester to launch!

edam · 23/02/2011 15:42

Hecate, I'm not so sure it's madness to think God would create male bodies with foreskins and then expect parents to have them chopped off their babies. If you look at the Old Testament he did some really weird stuff. Never been able to get to grips with the whole expecting his bestest believer to sacrifice his first born son and then, just as the knife was lifted, going 'ta da! You don't have to do it, I was only testing you!' (I paraphrase...)

Equally puzzled by all the people who call themselves Christians but have apparently not noticed that in the Gospels Jesus is reported to have hung out with the marginalised and despised and been v. v. angry with the Pharisees and the authorities in general (apart from saying pay your taxes).

GrimmaTheNome · 23/02/2011 15:47

edam - yeah, and why they build big churches for public worship when what Jesus said was:'But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you'

Lol at Chipmonkey's MN 'cure'! I look forward to the book!

Hecate - love that song! Was alerted to it by my (gay) sister who gets a wild look in her eye whenever the Daily Mail is mentioned!

hymie · 23/02/2011 16:02

The illness question is an interesting one though, if you can look past the obvious unpleasantness of the usual intent when it is raised.

Nature has designed living things to reproduce, passing on their genes etc otherwise everything stops.

I can see how having the desire to be with your own sex so by definition not passing on your linked genetic material could be described as something 'not natural'.

reelingintheyears Tue 22-Feb-11 13:14:56 Same as bupcakes....

It would put me in a bad mood.

We're not sure but think DS2 may well be gay.

I'd fucking kill anyone who tried to 'cure' him.

That's not nice, is it. I thought it was common knowledge that most gay people, if they have children wish that their children were straight as their lives would be easier

ARepleteHmmSkiNun · 23/02/2011 16:08

toddlerama Tue 22-Feb-11 13:28:11 Speaking of intolerance, this thread has so far produced:

Fanatic
Idiots
Crap
I'd fucking kill anyone who....
Daft
Nutters
Over a fictional book. Looks like intolerance is not limited to Eileen.

Indeed Toddlerama. In fact if one were to substitute the word "leftie" or "socialist" in the above posts for "religious" the real dangers of intolerance would be more apparent

hymie - try my New Scientist link. Nature isn't that simple and doesn't 'design' anything.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 23/02/2011 16:33

The fact that he's dead is a significant issue in him doing anything.

chipmonkey · 23/02/2011 17:13

I didn't realise my life was supposed to be easy because I'm straight. I feel cheated!Grin
